Western Thriller 'Killing Faith' Trailer with Guy Pearce & Bill Pullman
Image
"Ain't no running from it, is there?" Shout Studios has revealed the first official trailer for an indie western thriller film titled Killing Faith, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Ned Crowley. This one is actually getting a theatrical release in October, on account of the mainstream cast featuring some major names. I always wonder how they got them? In the lawless frontier of 1849, a deadly sickness spreads — and with it, rumors of a young girl who's cursed by the devil. One man must choose whether to run, or stand and protect the innocent. A widowed doctor helps escort a freed slave and her daughter across the West to find a distant Faith Healer. The mother believes the girl is possessed. The doctor suspects she just has the disease they call "The Sickness". But one fact remains – everything the child touches dies. Scary! The new western-thriller stars Guy Pearce,...

Dolly Parton Surprises Matlock Star After She Wins Breakout Award & It's Delightful
Image
Matlock star Skye P. Marshall was surprised by country music superstar Dolly Parton, during an interview at Newport Beach TV Fest. A gender-flipped remake of the classic 1980s legal drama, Matlock follows Kathy Bates in the role of Madeline "Matty" Matlock, who joins a prestigious law firm to investigate the death of her daughter.

The show was a success on CBS, and in October 2024, Matlock season 2 was renewed. Marshall plays Olympia Lawrence, a junior partner at Jacobson Moore law firm who is Matty's boss, and who has an initially frosty relationship with her. Marshall has received acclaim for her performance, and is looking forward to starring alongside some big names next season.

Per Et Online, Marshall was interviewed about what audiences can expect from the Matlock season 2 storyline, and how Olympia fits into it. She teased some "phenomenal" guest stars for the season, and had previously revealed that Parton was...

One Of Kurt Russell's Biggest Flops Of The '80s Ended Up Being An Oscar Nominee
Image
There's long been a divide between what's popular with general audiences and what's popular with the Academy Award voters. Popular, beloved directors like Alfred Hitchcock famously never won an Oscar, for instance, just as actor Samuel L. Jackson has never won one despite starring in seemingly every big movie ever. One particularly fun example of this phenomenon came with Kurt Russell's 1984 movie "Swing Shift," a box office bomb that grossed $6.6 million on a $15 million budget.

Why did it bomb? The general consensus was that the movie failed to live up to its promising premise. The movie was about the labor shortage during WWII, where women found unexpected power in the workforce before being pushed back into traditional roles the moment the war was over. The movie captured the feeling of the time period well and featured a few hard-hitting moments, but it didn't nail it in the way that...

Christina Applegate Says She's "Proud" of '90s Cult Comedy 'Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead'
Image
Christine Applegate, the Hollywood star famous for her roles in Married… With Children and Dead to Me, started acting at a very young age. Her TV roles were mostly secondary, and ultimately, she had her breakthrough in a 1991 comedy titled Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. The movie wasn't exactly acclaimed back then, and it has faded out from popular culture. Still, Applegate says that she's proud of making the movie that has since become a cult classic.

The film, which has to have one of the best film titles of all time, sees Applegate play Sue Ellen Crandell, a 17-year-old who doesn't agree with her mom hiring a babysitter to take care of the house and all of Sue Ellen's siblings while she goes on a trip. You can probably guess what happens to the babysitter, but what's surprising is what Sue Ellen decides to do about it: she finds a job,...

‘Wheels of Terror’ at 35 – The Stranger Danger Panic of the 1980s
Image
If you grew up in the ‘80s, you might recall the Stranger Danger Panic that ignited after Etan Patz’s abduction in 1979 and the kidnapping/murder of Adam Walsh two years later. Collective fear reached such a fevered pitch that kids’ faces were soon plastered all over milk cartons and then-President Ronald Reagan signed the Missing Children Act and the Missing Children’s Assistance Act. While the bubble popped by the mid-80s and the dread quickly dissipated as the new decade approached, 1990’s Wheels of Terror perfectly captures the social climate of the ‘80s in a way that feels real, raw, and tragic.

Christopher Cain’s made-for-television horror/thriller stars Joanna Cassidy (Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead) as a mother and bus driver who moves herself and her daughter to the fictional small-town of Copper Valley, Arizona. They’ve left behind the bright lights of suburbia for a quieter life.

Stephen King's Tommyknockers Deserves More Credit (But Just a Little)
Image
In the 1990s, one name dominated TV miniseries: Stephen King. At the time, King had become the wealthiest writer in history, author of such popular novels as Misery, Carrie, It, The Stand and dozens more. While some of his titles -- Carrie, The Shining -- found homes on the big screen, many more became celebrated TV miniseries, attracting millions of viewers. In 1993, King and ABC partnered to add one more to the miniseries roster: The Tommyknockers.

Based on King’s 1987 novel of the same name -- one of King’s least-favorite of his own works -- The Tommyknockers attracted a wide audience, but earned mixed to negative reviews. Today, it has a reputation as one of the weakest of all King’s adaptations. Viewed more than 30 years later, however, The Tommyknockers stands out as an unusual King story. Despite the content restrictions of 1990s television the financial constraints the show's production,...

‘Uppercut’ Review: Big Apple-Set Remake of German Boxing Drama Gets Lost in Translation
Image
Remakes from foreign-language originals often face difficulties in translating material from one cultural context to another, but seldom has that been so awkward as in “Uppercut,” Torsten Reuther’s Americanized retooling of his 2021 German debut “Leberhaken” (aka “Liver Punch”). What was already a problematically stagey wade into normally action-oriented terrain — the underdog sports drama — gains additional hurdles here from the writer-director’s tin ear for English dialogue, as well as the inexplicable return of a lead actor even less adept in a foreign tongue. Lionsgate is rolling this earnest but unconvincing feature out to limited U.S. theaters as well as digital platforms on Feb. 28.

The setup may well remind you of prior female boxer films, notably “Million Dollar Baby” and recent “The Fire Inside.” Alas, it never really gets beyond their narrative starting gates, in which a green but determined young woman pushes to be accepted as pupil by an initially dismissive,...

What Happened To The Cast Of Six Feet Under?
Image
When it first aired in 2000, "Six Feet Under" was unknowingly part of the dawn of a golden age of television. Alongside early-aughts HBO hits like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos," the tragicomedy told the story of a family-run funeral home trying to make sense of life and death in the wake of the sudden loss of their father.

A revival has reportedly been in the works for some time, despite the fact that it would seemingly be in conflict with what is arguably the greatest series finale of a TV show ever. Still, the mere idea of a return to these loveable, complicated, and tragic characters makes us wonder what happened to the cast of "Six Feet Under?"

T’Pol’s Complete Star Trek Timeline Explained
Image
Sub-commander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) made history on Star Trek: Enterprise and ultimately played a vital role in the events leading up to the founding of the United Federation of Planets. Set hundreds of years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, Enterprise follows Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) and his crew as they explore the galaxy on Earth's first warp-capable starship, the Enterprise Nx-01. After the Vulcans made first contact with Earth in 2063, they did not immediately give humanity access to their more advanced technology, fearing humans were not ready for it.

When Captain Archer set out for the stars, the Vulcan High Command provided useful star charts, but assigned T'Pol to the Enterprise to keep an eye on the crew. Although Vulcan and Earth would eventually become strong allies, their relationship was initially contentious. Some humans believed that the Vulcans were holding them back, as they observed...

Wes Craven's 10 Most Underrated Movies
Image
Wes Craven is widely known for shaping the horror genre with hits like Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, but his lesser-known works reveal a filmmaker with a more nuanced approach to storytelling. Although many of his movies didn't achieve the same level of success, they highlight the director-writer-producer's ability to explore deeper themes and push the limits of genre filmmaking, particularly horror movies.

Craven’s work outside his most famous titles often explored darker, more experimental ideas, combining horror with psychologically intense themes. Some of his most underrated movies are not merely about shocking and scaring the viewer; they also examine human nature, fear, and the consequences of societal issues. Titles such as Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and The People Under the Stairs demonstrate Craven’s potential to innovate and challenge expectations, all while continuing to offer a still-fresh perspective on what horror can be. With much-deserved praise for his most popular works,...

Chain Reaction Starring Keanu Reeves & Morgan Freeman is Streaming for Free on Tubi
Image
Keanu Reeves has become known as an action hero with roles such as Neo in The Matrix and John Wick in a brutal quadrilogy of movies. Before all that, though, he teamed up with Morgan Freeman and Rachel Weisz on the 1996 conspiracy action thriller Chain Reaction, and the movie is currently finding a new audience on the free streaming platform Tubi.

Chain Reaction sees Reeves play Eddie Kasalivich, a machinist who is forced to go on the run when he is framed for causing a deadly explosion at a groundbreaking clean-energy project. In the usual style of this kind of thriller, Eddie must take on the bad guys, stay alive, and clear his name all within a couple of hours of tense drama. Unfortunately, the film did quite live up to the premise, and did not deliver the kind of box office that Reeves' movies have become known for.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Director Says Disney 'Would Never' Make the Movie Today
Image
While Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of the most beloved films of the 1980s, fans should not expect to see a sequel happening anytime soon. This is despite the director's claim that a quality screenplay has already been written for a follow-up film.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz (per Variety), Who Framed Roger Rabbit? director Robert Zemeckis commentend on the possibility of the movie finally getting a sequel. Zemeckis confirmed that there is a script for Roger Rabbit 2, but one major hurdle with getting the movie made is the inclusion of the fan favorite character Jessica Rabbit. According to Zemeckis, Jessica is just too provocative to be featured in a new film greenlit by Disney, as the director pointed to the edits made to her appearance at Disneyland. He then claimed that the original film was only made because he got very lucky with the timing.

Robert Zemeckis on Roger Rabbit 2, and Bob Hoskins Almost Not Being Cast
Image
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a movie that was ahead of its time in many ways, and a sequel script was written and is hidden away in the Disney vaults. However, while original director Robert Zemeckis has been sharing details of the story, he says there is one reason why it will never be made Jessica Rabbit and Disney sensibilities.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is memorable for two reasons stop it, now! The reasons are its incredible blend of animation and live-action, and an impeccably crafted film noir story that is played completely straight by Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant, against the lunacy of a host of animated characters from both the worlds of Warner Bros. and Disney something that at the time was completely unheard of.

During an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Zemeckis revealed that there is actually a script already written for a sequel,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From 1968's Bullitt
Image
Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"

You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

Do You Remember These 30+ USA Network Original Horror Movies Released from 1989-2004?
Image
Before USA Network became series-focused, the cable channel delivered a steady stream of weekly original movies. Many of which were produced by McA (now NBCUniversal). And during this era — between the late 1980s and early 2000s — USA offered a variety of genres; action and suspense were the most common, but horror also came up from time to time.

Especially around Halloween.

USA Network is no longer in the business of airing these “World Premiere Movies,” horror or otherwise, and there haven’t been great strides to bring all of them to streaming or modern home video. However, the horror entries certainly have their merits as well as fans.

See if you can remember these original movies from USA Network’s horror history.

The Tommyknockers (1993) – Horror TV Shows We Miss
Image
What happens when you watch something described as barely watchable especially when the original narrative it was based on was termed as “awful” by its own author? Hi, I’m Niki, and this is The Tommyknockers for Horror TV Shows We Miss.

I’m sure we have quite a few Stephen King fans among our viewers so it will be interesting to see what even the most hardcore of you think. Do we agree with King, the critics, and maybe most of humanity? Or is there something here that we’ve been missing? This is not the worst adaptation I’ve ever seen– at least not yet. The first part started off slow for me, and even though I wanted to bail at certain points I stayed. It may have been my love for Butch, or Gard’s drunken intrusive thoughts, or the complete and utter fever dream that this presents as.

7 Best Shows Like ‘My Adventures With Superman’ To Watch If You Love The Series
Image
My Adventures with Superman is one of the most brilliant superhero animated series. Created by Brendan Clougher, Jake Wyatt, and Josie Campbell, the Adult Swim series tells the story of Superman aka Clark Kent as he starts his new job at The Daily Planet, with his roommate Jimmy Olson, and his senior intern at The Daily Planet who is none other than Lois Lane. They quickly become a team and try to bring in big stories so that they can become real reporters while Clark also tries to become the hero he is meant to be. My Adventures with Superman has great action but the brilliant thing about the series is that it isn’t an action series about Superman, it’s a series about a superhero and his relationships as he figures out who he really is. So, if you love the heart, optimism, great story, and fantastic animation...

A remake of the ’90s classic “Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead” is coming to theaters in spring.

Simone Joy Jones, Nicole Richie and June Squibb will lead an ensemble including Jermaine Fowler (“Superior Donuts”), comic Ms. Pat, Olympian Gus Kenworthy, as well as newcomers Donielle Tremaine Hansley, Miles Fowler, Iantha Richardson and Tyriq Withers.

Like the 1991 film, “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” follows 17-year-old girl Tanya (Jones), who plans to vacation in Europe with her friends before heading to college in the fall. Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead remake earns an R rating
Image
Nearly four years have gone by since it was announced that Treehouse Pictures was developing a remake of the 1991 Christina Applegate cult classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (watch it Here) that would be directed by Bille Woodruff (Beauty Shop and the Honey quadrilogy) from a screenplay by Chuck Hayward (Dear White People). All that was revealed about the project at the time was that it would be “a present-day retelling centered on a black family.” Then that’s the last we heard about it. Apparently it made its way through production while flying under the radar, though, because Film Ratings has revealed that the remake has already received its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board… and it’s a surprising one. While the original film was rated PG-13, the remake has earned an R rating for “teen drug use, language and some sexual references.”

Directed by...

An Oldenburg Fairy Tale: How ‘Uppercut’ Director Torsten Ruether Adapted His Own German Film and Got Ving Rhames to Star
Image
“It really is a fairy tale, an Oldenburg fairy tale,” says Torsten Ruether, speaking about his new movie Uppercut, “how this movie came together feels magical, somehow.”

Two years ago, Ruether was in Oldenburg, Germany’s leading indie film festival, presenting his debut feature, Leberhaken, a low-budget boxing movie with a distinctly Million Dollar Baby vibe: Newcomer Luise Großmann stars as a promising young pugilist who tries to persuade a disillusioned trainer (Hardy Daniel Krueger) to take her on as a pupil.

“We had the premiere, opening night, and at the party afterward a number of U.S. producers came up to me and said: ‘This is the kind of story American love. It’s been nearly 20 years since Million Dollar Baby. We want to redo this for the U.S.'”

Promises made over a few gin and tonics at an international film festival party aren’t usually the...
