Tony Gilroy heartbroken over Genevieve O'Reilly getting ignored by the Emmys: "It really hurts"
Image
The 2025 Emmys snub seems to have stung Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy as much as it did for the fans. The Disney+ show received 14 nominations in July, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Cinematography.

Of the 14 nominees, only two were cast members. Forest Whitaker got nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for playing Saw Gerrera in the episode "I Have Friends Everywhere," and Alan Tudyk's motion-capture portrayal of revamped Imperial droid K-2So in "Who Else Knows?" got nominated for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.

It did not sit well with the fans that Genevieve O'Reilly (Mon Mothma) and Diego Luna (Cassian Andor) did not get a nod. Gilroy also felt the same way about the nominations.

In a conversation with Gold Derby, Gilroy admitted that it was "painful" to see O'Reilly not getting the recognition for their brilliant performances.

Could Timothy Olyphant be Star Wars' best hope for future awards seasons?
Image
Many fans were angered by the fact that none of the main actors from Andor were recognized by the Television Academy for their work when this year's Emmy nomations were released; only Forest Whitaker receive a nomination for the second season.

Whitaker received a nomination for his guest work on the series. Another actor received a nomination a few years back in the same category. As the Emmys are approaching it is important to look back at his work and nomination.

Timothy Olyphant was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2021 for his season 2 appearance in the Mandalorian. His was nominated for appearing in the episode, the Marshall. It was the second episode of the season.

It was a worthy performance of a nomination. Olyphant brought a lot of humor and high stakes to the role of Cobb Vanth, the Marshall of Mos Espa, who Din Djarin...

Cynthia Erivo Set To Receive Santa Barbara Film Festival 18th Annual Kirk Douglas Award For Excellence In Film
Image
Although final Emmy voting has just begun (and will end on August 27th), the early signs of Oscar season are already upon us. Evidence of that is the annual Kirk Douglas Award For Excellence In Film, often one of many honors bestowed on those who also might also figure in the Oscar race. For this year’s 18th recipient of Santa Barbara International Film Festival honor, Cynthia Erivo has been announced as the honoree at a ceremony taking place on Thursday December 4, 2025 at a Black-Tie dinner at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara. This marks the fourth time the honor has been presented since the passing of the screen legend it was named after, and who often approved of those who were chosen for it.

Already a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy winner, Erivo will be aiming for Egot status this coming season with her performance in Wicked : For Good,...

“Dazed and Confused” (Gramercy Pictures) “Dazed and Confused”

Few films evoke high school memories as strongly as “Dazed and Confused,” Richard Linklater’s follow-up to his 1990 feature debut, “Slacker.” The film features a sprawling cast of high schoolers, filled with incoming freshmen, rising seniors and everything in between, as they coalesce on the final day of the school year. The movie may take place in 1970s Texas, featuring hazing rituals and pastimes that may seem alien to today’s current crop of high schoolers, yet the...

Image
Brothers Kevin and Andrew Macdonald discussed their respective careers in an ever-shifting film industry Sunday at the Edinburgh International Film Festival‘s keynote session.

Kevin Macdonald, an Oscar winner for his feature-length documentary One Day in September (1999), is also known for his fiction work, including The Last King of Scotland (2006) and State of Play (2009), as well as Touching the Void (2003) and How I Live Now (2013). Andrew Macdonald, meanwhile, is a producer best known for his collaborations with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland on the likes of Trainspotting (1996), The Beach (2000), Ex Machina (2014) and the 28 Days Later franchise.

The session, hosted by Edinburgh TV Festival boss Rowan Woods, began with a blast from the past: the brothers’ short film that saw them as 20-something-year-olds interview the creatives — including Robbie Coltrane, Sam Fuller and Michael Winner — at the 1992 Edinburgh Film Festival. The pair were pressing industry names on how to get Shallow Grave made.

Sean Penn in Fuori di testa (1982)
Fast Times At Ridgemont High Legacy: How It Changed Teen Movies
Sean Penn in Fuori di testa (1982)
Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment

Released on August 13, 1982, the Fast Times at Ridgemont High legacy began with a bold, authentic take on American teen life. The film didn’t just launch a wave of comedies — it cracked open the locker of adolescence and let the chaos spill out. Directed by Amy Heckerling and written by Cameron Crowe, it was inspired by Crowe’s undercover reporting at a Southern California high school. He posed as a student to capture the unfiltered reality of teenage life.

The result was a movie that felt less like a Hollywood product and more like a time capsule awkward, funny, painful, and unforgettable.

Controversy That...

Jeff Bridges at an event for The 82nd Annual Academy Awards (2010)
Buyer Beware: Some 4K discs and streaming versions of cult classics have soundtrack changes
Jeff Bridges at an event for The 82nd Annual Academy Awards (2010)
Not too long ago, I did a JoBlo Originals video on the 1994 Jeff Bridges/Tommy Lee Jones action flick Blown Away. In it, I mentioned that the movie had just been re-released by Kino Lorber on 4K Uhd—a cause for celebration. Or so I thought. While the movie is largely intact, two minor soundtrack substitutions have apparently been made, which you can read about here.

The movie relies heavily on the music of U2, and luckily those songs are intact. However, two other soundtrack cuts—Here’s Where the Story Ends by The Sundays and All Night Long by Aretha Franklin—have been replaced. In the case of Here’s Where the Story Ends, the replacement is a cover version you might not notice right away. The Aretha song, however, has been swapped out for some generic jazz, and they even removed Aretha’s name from a piece of...

‘The Hunting Wives’ Author May Cobb Signs With Linden Entertainment
Image
Exclusive: Linden Entertainment has signed bestselling author and screenwriter May Cobb for management.

Known for works of suspense, Cobb most famously wrote the novel The Hunting Wives, which Netflix recently launched as a series exec produced by Cobb, after picking up exclusive U.S. rights during the Starz-Lionsgate separation agreement.

Published by Penguin Random House in 2021, the book is a psychological thriller centered on Sophie O’Neill, a former journalist who moves back to her wealthy Texas hometown with her family after a series of personal setbacks, becoming captivated by a group of women known for their upscale lifestyle, social gatherings, and their obsession with hunting.

Since premiering on July 21, The Hunting Wives has remained a Top Ten Television Show for Netflix and racked up billions of minutes viewed, per Luminate data, doing particularly impressive numbers for a show that’s only streaming domestically.

Cobb’s next novel, All the Little Houses,...

Star Wars is already in its third dark times era
Image
The 16-year hiatus between Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) and Episode I - Phantom Menace (1999)—and again after Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) until Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015))—became known to fans as the Dark Times. That is, stretches when Star Wars went more-or-less silent. Now, in 2025, we might be living through another one.

At age 81, George Lucas finally took the Comic-Con stage—his first-ever visit—and talked Star Wars only to remind everyone he’s moved on. Focusing on the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, he spoke passionately about collecting comic and narrative art, not specifically the future of the galaxy far, far away.

Granted, Lucas sold his empire (pun intended) in 2012, handing over all creative direction to The Walt Disney Company. While he hasn’t played an official role in the future of the galaxy in well over a decade,...

Emmys 2025 Voters’ Guide: Breaking Down the Early Frontrunners
Image
With a big variety of series, dozens of first-time nominees and a few shows breaking back into the race, the 77th annual Emmy Awards are set to make history — possibly in more ways than one. Below, Variety breaks down the contenders in some of the main categories.

Drama series

Arguably, the most stacked race of all this year is the drama category. Although “Severance,” “The Last of Us,” “Slow Horses” and “Andor” have landed nominations in the category before, none of this year’s noms have taken home the trophy in the past. “Severance” is an early front-runner but it’s not without its huge competitors in the debuts this year. “Paradise” on Hulu racked up four nominations for its freshman year on Hulu, and “The Diplomat” caused quite a splash with its second season on Netflix, but HBO Max’s “The Pitt” (with 13 noms) remains the biggest competitor against the Apple TV+ leader.

Keanu Reeves’ Ethnicity Makes His Underrated Thriller Even Better That Deserves a John Wick Style Franchise
Image
David Ayer‘s Street Kings (2008) may not be the most famous movie in Keanu Reeves’ oeuvre, but it is one of his best and most underrated works to date. However, what makes it even better is his mixed ethnicity, specifically Native Hawaiian, Chinese, and Portuguese ancestry [via IMDb], which saves the film from being trapped in an age-old Hollywood stereotype, i.e., featuring a white male actor in the role of a hero and savior.

Moreover, the film’s over-the-top action sequences and lone hero on a path of vengeance make it a solid precursor to Reeves’s John Wick saga, giving Street Kings a good reason to deserve the franchise treatment from Hollywood.

In this adrenaline-infused cop drama littered with moments of typical street bravado and badge lingo, Street Kings refuses to be boring for even a minute with its constant testosterone-fueled sequences of action and suspense.

"That's The Whole Point Of The Movie": Miscommunication In Denis Villeneuve's $203M Oscar-Nominated Movie Emotionally Explained By Therapist
Image
A therapist breaks down the miscommunication in Denis Villeneuve's 2016 Oscar-nominated sci-fi epic Arrival. Starring Jeremy Renner as experimental physicist Ian Donnelly and Amy Adams' linguist Dr. Louise Banks, a group of scientists is tasked to learn to communicate with extraterrestrials when gigantic spaceships arrive on Earth.

As a movie that revolves almost entirely around communication, Arrival explores the impact of language on perception and how to foster an understanding between different cultures and realities. The movie grossed over $206 million worldwide against a production budget of $47 million and received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Director for Villeneuve.

Recently, licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright of Cinema Therapy sat down to discuss the 2016 movie and its approach to miscommunication and the movie's theme about knowledge and what it means to be human. In the scene where Louise, Ian, and Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker) came together to talk about the situation early in the movie,...

George R.R. Martin names the best Star Wars spinoff (and he's so right)
Image
In a recent blog post, renowned Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin shared his opinions on two of the biggest—and most divisive—franchises in modern popular culture: Star Wars and DC.

After noting that he’s enjoyed shows like Apple TV+’s Murderbot, he shared a more in-depth review on a Star Wars spinoff we loved here at Winter is Coming.

“Andor was this year’s highlight, though. Far and away the best of the Star Wars spinoffs," Martin wrote on July 25. "Looked gorgeous, Diego Luna was first rate, and there was a realism and tension to the story that was sadly lacking in most of the other spinoffs. It’s nice to see someone doing science fiction right.”

Indeed, Martin’s statement echoes many a sentiment shared by Star Wars fans across the globe, the vast majority of whom were enthralled by Andor’s explosive mix of political intrigue and high-stakes drama.

Andor may have been Star Wars' last chance to break through at the Emmys
Image
Andor exited the 2025 Emmy nominations with 14 nods spanning Outstanding Drama Series, directing, writing, cinematography, sound design, visual effects, voiceover work from Alan Tudyk, and more. Yet the anticipation of key acting nods was dashed as only Forest Whitaker secured a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Saw Gerrera, while lead actor Diego Luna was inexplicably snubbed.

Whitaker’s nomination marks Star Wars’ rare Television Academy recognition in acting, even if confined to a guest slot. His performance as Gerrera landed with Rogue One fans and proved impactful enough to earn acknowledgment from the Emmy powers-that-be this year.

Cassian Andor, however, anchors the show, and many felt that Luna absolutely deserved to be recognized in the Outstanding Lead Actor category. This omission particularly stings given his series-defining performance and the show’s critical acclaim.

Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal, arguably Star Wars TV’s most prominent face,...

Tony Gilroy breaks silence on Andor Emmy snubs
Image
In 2023, Andor's first season received eight Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. Despite the Disney+ original series being recognized in many categories—such as writing, directing, cinematography, music, and many others—it didn't walk away with any wins. While even getting nominated at the Emmys is cause for celebration, zero wins was surely a disappointing result after such a well-received show.

In case you've been out of the loop for a while, Andor stars Diego Luna as Cassian Andor. The show takes place in the events leading up to 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which itself occurs immediately before the events of 1977's A New Hope. I know, it's confusing if you're new around here, but that's Star Wars.

Andor's two seasons have been praised by fans and critics alike, as they offer a more nuanced and grounded look into the Star Wars universe—one without...

‘Andor’ Creator Tony Gilroy on His Emmy Nominations and Overcoming Those Snubs: ‘It’s a Complicated Process’
Image
“I’m trying to come up with a new word word for excited,” “Andor” creator Tony Gilroy said just a few hours after his show, set in the “Star Wars” universe, racked up 14 Emmy nominations. “I know that’s my job, but I’m having trouble coming up with something really, truly original to say.”

“Andor’s” second season, which takes place in the five years that lead up to 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which itself is set directly before the events of 1977’s “Star Wars,” had more nominations than Emmy powerhouses like “The Bear” (also part of the far-reaching Disney galactic republic). This is the final season of “Andor,” and it is very clearly going out on top.

‘Andor’ Creator Tony Gilroy On Emmy Snubs For Diego Luna & Genevieve O’Reilly: “These Performances Will Be Celebrated & Discussed For Years To Come”
Image
With 14 Emmy nominations Tuesday or the second season of Disney+/Lucasfilm’s Andor — the third most ever for a Star Wars show after the second and first seasons of The Mandalorian — you’d think there be some cause to celebrate.

“There are a lot of performances that I wish were recognized,” Andor creator Tony Gilroy told Deadline today before specifying “Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly. There are a dozen performances.”

The series, which takes place in the events before the 2016 movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a prequel itself to 1977’s original Star Wars: Episode IV, only scored one acting nom today: that being for Forest Whitaker in Guest Actor Drama for his portrayal of rebel renegade Saw Gerrera (two noms if you count the character voice-over performance for Alan Tudyk’s K-2So). Primetime Emmy nominations for the 2024-2025 television season are out, and Star Wars did fairly well against its competition. Diego Luna's Emmy snub has Star Wars fans absolutely fuming
Image
The 2025 Emmy nominations are out, and while Andor soared with 14 total nods, one name was shockingly missing: Diego Luna. The actor, who delivered a career-defining performance as Cassian Andor, was snubbed for Best Actor in a Drama Series, leaving fans and critics alike scratching their heads.

Luna's performance in Andor season 2 was widely hailed as one of the best in modern Star Wars storytelling. Across 12 episodes, he navigated the transformation of Cassian from disillusioned survivor to burgeoning rebel with a raw intensity that didn’t require lightsaber duels or flashy effects to hit home. His quiet defiance, layered grief, and hard-earned conviction were the heartbeat of the show, skyrocketing Andor into prestige TV territory.

The Television Academy clearly did recognize the show’s quality. Andor received nominations for Outstanding Drama Series, Directing (Benjamin Caron), Writing (Beau Willimon), Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Forest Whitaker), Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance...

Critics’ Conversation: 2025 Emmy Nominations Take a Typically Shallow Dive Into TV’s Best
Image
Daniel Fienberg: Say what you will about Emmy voters, but when they like something, they Really like it.

My biggest takeaway, as I’m picking my way through the nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, is how top-heavy the list is. Twenty-seven nominations for Severance! Twenty-four nominations for The Penguin! Twenty-three nominations apiece for The Studio and The White Lotus!

So many of these juggernauts received nominations so completely across the board — the dominance of White Lotus and Severance in the supporting categories is especially impressive — that I found myself more distracted by the standouts from those casts who didn’t get nominated than those who did. Where’s Rhenzy Feliz for The Penguin? Or Chase Sui Wonders for The Studio? Or Lisa from Blackpink for The White Lotus (or Carrie Coon’s vacation buddies, I suppose)?

It’s a myopia that leads to the consistent impression that...

‘The Last of Us’ earns 16 Emmy nominations — but has 3 shocking snubs
Image
Emmy voters are still infected with The Last of Us, rewarding the zombified series with 16 nominations on Tuesday, including Best Drama Series. Notably, Season 2 of HBO's adaptation of the popular video-game series didn't get everything for which it submitted, and there are three notable snubs that are causing an uproar on social media: supporting actress Isabela Merced, and the standout episode "Through The Valley" in both directing and writing.

Here are the categories The Last of Us got into — and missed.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

It was never a question whether the fungal apocalypse drama would receive a series bid, since Season 1 scored 24 nominations and won eight trophies in 2023. The Last of Us ended up placing fourth in Gold Derby's Best Drama Series predictions by the time the nominations were announced. It finds itself nominated alongside Andor, The Diplomat, Paradise, The Pitt, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus.

Severance, The Penguin and The Last of Us dominate the 2025 Emmy nominations
Image
The time has come to dive into the list of 2025 Emmy Nominations, where, as luck would have it, some of the most nominated shows are from the science fiction and fantasy genres. What may be more surprising is that HBO has beaten Netflix for the most Emmy Nominations, with a total of 142, thanks to hit shows such as The White Lotus, The Penguin and The Last of Us. That's the most nominations the network has ever received.

Speaking of The Last of Us, it joins the ranks of most nominated shows alongside Severance (Apple TV+), Black Mirror (Netflix), Andor (Disney+), What We Do In The Shadows (FX), and The Boys (Prime Video). Severance, The Penguin, The Last of Us, Andor and Black Mirror are amongst the most-nominated shows.

Tell me, truthfully, are we really that surprised? Let's get into the details, shall we?

Severance is topping the list (rightfully so...

‘The Pitt’: Here are its 13 Emmy nominations — and 3 big snubs
Image
Emmy voters indeed fell into The Pitt. The HBO Max hit received 13 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, including Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actor for Noah Wyle.

Here are the categories the medical drama got into — and missed.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

The medical drama has been the breakout hit of the year since its January debut. It quickly shot up Gold Derby's Best Drama Series odds and was in second place by the time of nominations. It's nominated alongside Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus.

Best Drama Actor: Nominated

Wyle was the last one called alphabetically, but he's been first in the odds since May, a month after Season 1 ended and about six weeks after his tour-de-force performance in the 13th episode. This is Wyle's sixth Emmy nomination and first in 26 years. He was nominated in Best Drama Supporting Actor from 1994-99 for ER.

'Star Wars: Andor' Actors Snubbed in Emmy Nominations
Image
As always, this year’s Emmy nominations have produced some unexpected nods, and several snubs. For fans of Star Wars series Andor, though, even after receiving 14 nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series, the second season of arguably the best story of the franchise has been seriously snubbed in the acting categories.

Andor received plenty of praise when it was released on Disney+ earlier in the year, but following in the footsteps of Season 1, its Emmy tally has been nothing short of a disappointment for many. The first season received a total of eight nods in 2023, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

The nominations announced earlier today included the same three categories, along with nods in sound, visual effects, costumes, and music categories. However, where it was severely lacking was in the major acting categories, with only Forest Whitaker...

‘Squid Game’ skunked at the Emmys: Here are all the nominations it missed for Season 2 — including Lee Jung-jae and Choi Seung-hyun
Image
Sorry, Squid Game fans — it's game over at the Emmys.

According to Gold Derby’s odds, Netflix's most popular show was never expected to match the 14 Emmy nominations it earned in 2022, but nobody predicted Season 2 would get completely shut out. Just three years ago, Squid Game was nominated for Best Drama Series and brought home six awards: Best Actor for Lee Jung-jae, Best Directing, Best Drama Guest Actress for Lee Yoo-mi, Best Production Design (“Kkanbu”), Best Stunt Performance (“Stick to the Team”), and Best Visual Effects (“VIPs”). Three years later, Squid Game's second season continued to captivate audiences, logging over 192 million views on Netflix — but totally flopped with Emmy voters.

Here are the categories the second missed.

Best Drama Series

With eight slots available for Best Drama, Squid Game was barely holding onto the eighth position. While the second season wasn’t as critically acclaimed as the first...

Image

The 77th Emmy Awards nominees are a mixture of familiar and new, with Severance‘s second season topping the list with 27 nominations. Newbie The Studio scored 23 nominations, tying The Bear for the most Emmy nominations for a comedy series in a single year.

The Penguin received 24 nominations, and The White Lotus picked up 23. The Last Of Us earned 16 nominations, followed by Andor and Hacks with 14 each. Adolescence, The Bear, and The Pitt each received 13.

“In a year when the industry has continued to evolve—creatively, structurally, and economically—one thing remains clear: powerful performances and compelling stories still cut through. Emmy voters took notice this year as more members voted in the competition than ever before,” stated Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. “It’s a reminder of the impact incredible television and exceptional artists have on all of us. Andor Receives 14 Emmy Nominations, But One Snub Is Now My Villain Origin Story
Image
Star Wars' best TV show, Andor, has officially received fourteen nominations at this year's Emmy Awards for season 2, but this victory doesn't come without a price. Acting as an origin story of the Rebel Alliance itself, Andor's grounded approach has helped it to become the Star Wars franchise's most victorious and revered work.

Andor season 2 took things to the next level, and the Emmy Awards have noticed. As confirmed by Star Wars, the TV show has officially earned fourteen nominations at this year's ceremony, including a chance at taking home the award for Outstanding Drama Series. Andor faced some tough competition, and it didn't manage to beat all its competitors.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Andor for their 14 Emmy® nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. #Emmyspic.twitter.com/Fw2ukuIjHY— Andor | A Star Wars Original Series (@andorofficial) July 15, 2025

‘The White Lotus’ scores 23 nominations, but there are lots of snubs
Image
It’s clear Emmy voters remain fans of the HBO drama, which saw another impressive showing in this year’s nominations. Eight of the show's stars received nominations as did creator Mike White.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

The HBO series, which swept 10 Emmys in its first season and picked up five more in Season 2, has once again been nominated for Best Drama Series. At the time of the nominations, it was ranked third on Gold Derby’s odds list, behind Severance and The Pitt. It will go up against Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pitt, Severance and Slow Horses.

Best Drama Supporting Actor: Nominated

The show had nine contenders in the supporting actor category, but only three earned nominations: Walton Goggins as Rick, Jason Isaacs as Timothy Ratliff, and Sam Rockwell as Frank. These three consistently ranked among Gold Derby’s top five contenders, with Goggins leading the pack.

Since Nola King Has Lost Its Showrunner, Taylor Sheridan Should Call Godfather of Harlem Co-creator Chris Brancato
Image
Looks like Nola King, the spinoff of Tulsa King, has hit a major bump. That’s right, showrunner Dave Erickson, who also wrote the pilot of the upcoming show, has stepped down from his role as per Deadline. At present, he’s busy with Tulsa King Season 3 and also leading Taylor Sheridan’s Mayor of Kingstown. So, with this packed schedule, he just couldn’t take on another show at the moment.

This leaves Nola King without a showrunner just as it’s gearing up for production. Now, the team behind the show needs to find a replacement fast, also giving Sheridan a chance to bring someone like Chris Brancato. He’s famous for co-creating Godfather of Harlem, a crime drama that’s smart and filled with strong characters, exactly what Nola King needs.

So, with a lead like Samuel L. Jackson and New Orleans as the setting, Chris Brancato...

How Diego Luna Feels About Rogue One's Ending After Andor
Image
Not to sound like a broken record, but "Andor" is the best thing to happen to "Star Wars" in over 40 years. It's a masterpiece of a television show, one with a great ensemble of actors, meticulous production design (the kind that puts the show's multi-million-dollar budget to fantastic use), and a beautifully written story about the human cost of fighting fascism and the crucial individuals that history erases.

Arguably, however, the show's greatest magic trick is how it manages to remain a consistently thrilling and unpredictable while also serving as a prequel to a prequel. Creator Tony Gilroy and his team deftly avoid the common prequel pitfalls (like spending too much time on unnecessary cameos), and when they do explain things from previous "Star Wars" titles (like the origins of the best line from "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"), they do so in a way that adds real gravitas...

Jurnee Smollett Never Runs Away From a Challenge — So She Transformed Herself for ‘Smoke’
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the first two episodes of Smoke, “Pilot” and “Your Happy Makes Me Sad.”]

Jurnee Smollett will never back away from a challenge; in fact, she thrives on it.

The 38-year-old actress, who first gained recognition as a child star in the ’90s with her roles in Eve’s Bayou, Full House and On Our Own, is always looking for ways to grow with her characters. She doesn’t want to ever be “pigeonholed as one type of thing,” she makes clear.

“Whether it was a superhero in DC Comics or Letitia-fucking-Lewis in [Lovecraft Country], or a lawyer in The Burial, or a single mom fighting to find her daughter in Lou, I’m so fortunate that I get to step into all these different professions,” Smollett tells The Hollywood Reporter.

In her latest role, she’s now taking what she says is an even more “complex” and “flawed” character. In the Apple TV+ series Smoke she plays Michelle,...
