While Oscar season is always unpredictable, there are a few things you can always bank on about Telluride: the weather will change every 15 minutes, even the biggest A-list stars will stroll the streets casually — and one film will emerge as the festival favorite.
While Telluride may not officially hand out prizes, this year that crown went to Hamnet, Chloé Zhao's transcendent drama that imagines the love story of William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes Hathaway (Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley) — and how they cope with the death of their son, Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe). It was the talk of every gondola ride, passholder line, and coffee queue, with audiences and...

The Oscar race has one established frontrunner, which is often not the ideal place to be. As it happens, “Sinners” (Warner Bros.) auteur Ryan Coogler was checking out the competition at Telluride this Labor Day weekend, which unveiled a healthy slate of Oscar contenders.
Best Picture Contenders
One movie emerged that could challenge “Sinners” in multiple categories: Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) delivered heart-wrenching family drama “Hamnet” (Focus), featuring two powerhouse lead performances from Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley as William and Agnes Shakespeare. Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 bestseller, the film tracks their early romance and marriage and the birth of three children, two girls and a boy, Hamnet. Their lives are rocked by grief when they lose Hamnet to the plague, and Shakespeare buries himself in writing the tragedy “Hamlet.”

Focus Features killed it in Colorado with two “Jesses” and one Emma Stone.
On the ground, the story of what resonated — or flopped — at the Telluride Film Festival can look far different from the headlines. Still, one fact was hard to miss: Focus Features reigned over the mountains with Yorgos Lanthimos’ kaleidoscopic “Bugonia” and Chloé Zhao’s devastating “Hamnet,” both receiving near-universal acclaim from critics and festival-goers.
Telluride has long been a launchpad for eventual Oscar juggernauts. Recent alumni include Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight,” Zhao’s “Nomadland” and Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water.” If this year’s best picture winner was present in the Rockies, Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel feels like the strongest candidate. A win would deliver Focus Features its first best picture statuette.
“‘Hamnet’ is a masterpiece,” one woman told Variety. “It could be one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

When Noah Baumbach presented White Noise on Netflix, expectations were sky-high: a star-studded cast, major ambitions, and the aura of a filmmaker fresh off Marriage Story. Is Dwayne Johnson headed for the Oscars?
Judging by the rapturous reaction to his performance as wrestler Mark Kerr in “The Smashing Machine” at the Venice Film Festival on Monday night, that seems to be the consensus out of Italy.
The 53-year-old actor sobbed uncontrollably as the audience on the Lido erupted into 15-minute standing ovation, one of the longest at this year’s festival so far.
Johnson, who once performed as the WWE wrestler known as the Rock, has been the star of such commercial fare as “The Mummy,” “Black Adam” and “Baywatch.” But he goes much deeper in his next project, which will be released by A24 in November, as a ’90s fighter with demons.
Johnson stars opposite Emily Blunt in the film, who plays Kerr’s girlfriend Dawn Staples. During the ovation, Benny Safdie — the film’s director — hugged both his stars and joined Johnson in shedding...

When Steven Soderbergh’s version of Ocean’s Eleven hit theaters in 2001, it had everything going for it and therefore became an instant hit. The movie had big stars, snappy one-liners, and suits so sharp they could cut glass. It reminded the audience how fun a smart, stylish heist could be. The movie clicked so well that it spun off sequels and even a reboot, showing that audiences will always turn up for a con with this much sparkle.
But here’s the thing: while every crew member adds their own flavor, not everyone’s carrying the same weight. Some are the backbone of the whole operation, the ones you just can’t do without.

Due to illness, George Clooney couldn’t make it to this year’s Telluride Film Festival for the North American premiere of Jay Kelly, a film that centers on a movie star (Clooney) who experiences an existential crisis that prompts him to take a spur-of-the-moment trip to Europe to see his daughter and accept a career tribute from a film festival, and his “team,” who are expected to drop everything to support him. But a large coterie of Clooney’s collaborators on the film were in town — among them co-writer/director Noah Baumbach, actors Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup and Patrick Wilson, and composer Nicholas Britell — and basked in the warm reception and awards chatter that greeted the Netflix title at its four festival screenings, two of which followed career tributes to Baumbach.
On Sunday, following one of those screenings, I sat down with the aforementioned group for a wide-ranging Q&a.

Let’s start here: Billy Crudup is one of our truly great actors. Early into Jay Kelly, written by Noah Baumbach and Emily Mortimer and directed by Baumbach, Crudup appears for a one-scene turn that jump-starts the narrative. Over drinks, his Timothy confronts the George Clooney-like movie star Jay Kelly (George Clooney) about “stealing his life.” They were friends in acting school, and then Timothy made the mistake of inviting Jay to an important audition with an important filmmaker (Jim Broadbent). Now Jay Kelly is Jay Kelly and Timothy is a child therapist. A fist fight ensues.

More than a decade after his death, treasured American filmmaker Mike Nichols still inspires contemporary masters like Noah Baumbach.
Writer-director Baumbach was honored for 30 years’ worth of distinctive vision and indelible movie moments from “France Ha,” “The Squid and the Whale” and “Marriage Story” at this year’s Telluride Film Festival. He used the opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of his friend and touchstone, Nichols.
“He was the wisest person on every subject, and would say things in a way that would distill it,” Baumbach shared at Q&a following his thunderous tribute to Telluride’s Palm Theater.
“I was going through a painful personal time, a breakup, and I had lunch with him. I just went on and on, at that point I was telling anybody who would listen,” Baumbach said. The filmmaker then laid out a course of action for Nichols, suggesting he was trying to change the outcome of the breakup.

Will Broadway’s upcoming fall season match the starry line-up of last spring, when George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and other performers best known for their film and TV work brought in big audiences and bigger bucks?

Some new plays are in the mix, as well as an original musical (The Queen of Versailles) and plenty of revivals, a return engagement (Beetlejuice) and even a magic show (Rob Lake Magic with Special Guests The Muppets).

It might be time for the Academy to invite the “Sandman.”
Adam Sandler has long been one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, but his work in Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly” could finally land him where critics and cinephiles have long wanted to see him: in the Oscar race.
The U.S. premiere at the Telluride Film Festival marked a career-defining moment for Sandler, who joined Baumbach and co-star Laura Dern on stage as the filmmaker received a Silver Medallion tribute. Dern, who won her supporting actress Oscar for Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” (2018), praised her longtime collaborator, while Sandler reflected on Baumbach’s ability to “write the most beautiful words.”
Despite his box office dominance, Sandler has rarely been considered a serious Academy Awards contender. Over the years, critics have championed his work in films like Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love,” the Safdie brothers’ frenetic “Uncut Gems” and...

And for that, we might have to thank a couple of iconoclastic international filmmakers and a pair of British works of literature written in 1600 and 1818, or thereabouts.
That’s the conclusion after the first five days of the Venice Film Festival and the first three (out of only four) of the Telluride Film Festival, where Guillermo del Toro’s epic adaptation of “Frankenstein” and Chloé Zhao’s emotionally devastating Shakespeare riff “Hamnet” debuted and cemented themselves as formidable contenders.

The 82nd Venice Film Festival has yielded at least one standout, unanimously liked by critics and audiences, turning it into the hottest ticket for an event that also welcomes public ticket-buyers: Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice,” which Neon already has for stateside release.

For American director Noah Baumbach, returning to the Venice Film Festival must feel like coming back to the scene of a crime. Three years ago, he opened the fest with his apocalyptic drama White Noise, which was savaged by festival crowds. By the director's own admission, the experience was so traumatic he lost his faith in cinema. He credits two things with restoring it: working on the screenplay for Barbie with his wife, Greta Gerwig, and a new collaboration with actress Emily Mortimer, with whom he co-wrote his new film titled Jay Kelly. Jay Kelly, Noah Baumbach’s new film about the personal sacrifices required of people who make movies, and of people who support those people, had its North American premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Werner Herzog Theater on Saturday night, two days after its international bow at the Venice Film Festival. I have no doubt that upon reading that sentence, some will reflexively say, “Boo-hoo! Who cares about the problems of people in Hollywood? People in the real world have real problems.” And I can understand where they’re coming from. But do you know who won’t be among them? People in Hollywood, who also happen to account for the vast majority of people in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. For that reason — and even more so because the film is tremendously well made in every regard — I suspect that Jay Kelly will be a significant player this Oscar season.

The 52nd Telluride Film Festival is barely more than a day old and already there is a strong theme running through the new films here: art as a life altering experience. On Friday, we learned it was Paolo Sorrentino’s Venice opener “La Grazia.” And at the annual Telluride brunch, the question circulating was: Which screening of Scott Cooper’s “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” would Bruce show up at? Friday or Saturday? (Both.)
The jampacked brunch up in the mountains brought many of the Labor Day weekend players together. When I introduced Paul Mescal (“The History of Sound” and “Hamnet”) to documentarian Morgan Neville (“Man on the Run”), they dove into a deep, enthusiastic conversation about their mutual fascination, Paul McCartney. Mescal is deep in rehearsals in London for the first of four Sam Mendes Beatles movies. He has visited McCartney’s sheep farm in Scotland, where he decompressed after the Beatles breakup, and also visited his Cavendish manse. Neville is debuting his post-Beatles McCartney Wings movie.

Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly opens with a virtuosic single-take shot, a winding journey through a film set that introduces the small army required to manufacture a single moment of on-screen magic. We land on Jay Kelly (George Clooney), a movie star of the highest magnitude, a product of this intricate system.
The film immediately plants its philosophical flag with a quote from Sylvia Plath: “It’s a hell of a responsibility to be yourself. It’s easier to be somebody else or nobody at all.” For a man who has made a living being somebody else, the responsibility of being Jay Kelly is about to become crushingly apparent.

With his unique brand of elusive, analog filmmaking, Cornish writer-director Mark Jenkin has cultivated a devoted band of followers, none more loyal than those who work with him.
“He’s an artist,” actor Callum Turner (The Boys in the Boat) exclaims with a defiant tone. “This film is like a painting meets a poem. Reading the script, I could feel every wave, every knock, and every sound; it was so resonant. I was just desperate to do it.”
The project Turner refers to here is, of course, Rose Of Nevada, the latest feature from Jenkin, which debuts this afternoon in the Orizzonti competition at Venice. Turner leads the beguiling pic with George MacKay (1917).
Once again set in Jenkin’s native Cornwall, the film focuses on a forgotten fishing village where The Rose of Nevada, a boat that was lost at sea with all hands 30 years ago, mysteriously appears in the old harbour.

It’s always interesting seeing movies explore the creative process, such as what Steven Spielberg did recently in The Fabelmans, or larger-scale enterprises like the Oscar-winning Amadeus. But Mozart wasn’t around to give his Ok to that particular film. Bruce Springsteen, however, after turning down numerous past attempts and offers, is around to pass judgment on director-writer Scott Cooper’s anti-biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, which prefers to focus on the man, in a key moment of his life and career creating his sixth studio album Nebraska, as he resisted all commercial temptation to to find himself, and the truth, in his art.
It would seem for a major star, who six years earlier had appeared simultaneously on the covers of Time and Newsweek and had just come off a wildly successful release and tour for his fifth album The River, a bit of a risk. But as this exceptional film shows,...

Is it time for the “Hawke” to swoop in and nab his Oscar prey?
After four Academy Award nominations spanning both acting and writing, Ethan Hawke may have found the role that finally earns him an Oscar. In Richard Linklater’s “Blue Moon,” the actor delivers a searing performance as lyricist Lorenz Hart, one half of the legendary Broadway songwriting team Rodgers and Hart.
The film premiered in February at the Berlin International Film Festival, where Hawke’s co-star Andrew Scott won the Silver Bear for best supporting performance. “Blue Moon” has since screened at the Telluride Film Festival, where Hawke received one of the festival’s Silver Medallions — a distinction that has proven to be an Oscar bellwether.
Recent Silver Medallion recipients include eventual nominees Cate Blanchett for “Tár” (2022) and Adam Driver for “Marriage Story” (2019), along with eventual winners Anthony Hopkins for “The Father” (2020), Renée Zellweger for “Judy” (2019) and...

The 52nd Telluride Film Festival kicked off on Friday with the annual Patrons Brunch, which brings together filmmakers, journalists and the fest’s highest-spending passholders for bacon, eggs and mingling at a private residence high above the center of town.
Among those present were Jafar Panahi, the Iranian dissident whose It Was Just an Accident (Neon) won Cannes’ Palme d’Or in May, and who this festival helped to bring to the U.S. for the first time in 20 years; E. Jean Carroll, the former advice columnist who later won legal judgments against Pres. Donald Trump, who took a train from New York to attend the world premiere of the documentary feature Ask E. Jean (still seeking U.S. distribution); and two Skarsgårds, Stellan, here with Sentimental Value (Neon), and Alexander, here with Pillion (A24), who told me they will be seeing each other’s movies for the first time here at the fest.

This week, with Ryan Lattanzio covering the Venice International Film Festival, David Ehrlich joined “Screen Talk” co-host Anne Thompson from the mountains of Telluride, Colorado to discuss the 60-feature line-up for the Labor Day celebration of cinema.
David gives us early reviews of several films that are already breaking in Venice: He enjoyed Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” starring his usual suspects Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, but wants to see the director get more ambitious next time. He also enjoyed Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” in which George Clooney plays a version of himself, but would have liked Adam Sandler to have more to do.
At Telluride, Anne and David are excited to see two book adaptations: Chloé Zhao’s tearjerker “Hamnet” starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, and Philippa Lowthorpe’s “H is for Hawk,” starring Claire Foy, which deal with grief for a lost child and a father, respectively.

The cool breeze blowing through Telluride on Friday was not the wind rushing off Colorado’s San Juan mountain range – it was Hollywood’s collective sigh of relief that the most un-fussy film festival of the year was finally underway.
Unlike the sweaty tuxedos of Cannes and Venice or the snow-caked boots of Sundance, Telluride’s annual film festival is beloved and protected for its hardcore, laid-back vibe. Movie stars wander the streets with no fear of paparazzi. Customers at the shoebox-sized Sunshine Pharmacy, smack in the middle of town, weigh the pros and cons of filming in Hungary. A-listers wait in line. Seriously.
Each year, Telluride kicks off with a brunch for its patrons – industry and normal folk who shell out nearly $5,000 for a badge which gives them access to the annual film selection.
High above Telluride, an unpretentious cottage with a manmade pond hosted dozens of stars and behind-the-camera talent.

The Academy Awards may be a distinctly American tradition, but nowadays Oscar-spotting starts in Europe. Thanks to recent Palme d'Or-turned-Best Picture winners like Parasite and Anora, the Cannes Film Festival has reemerged an early harbinger of Oscar success. The primary launching pad for awards season, though, is the Venice Film Festival, which kicked off its 82nd edition on Wednesday with a coterie of big stars — George Clooney! Julia Roberts! Emma Stone! — sauntering their way down the red carpet and past the global press corps.

Despite a rough sinus infection, George Clooney put on a brave face to be at the red carpet world premiere of his new movie, Jay Kelly, in Venice last night.
The infection knocked him out of the festival’s press conference and other media duties, however, and we now understand from sources that he also won’t be able to fly to Telluride where the movie is getting its North American premiere this weekend. Planes and sinus infections are a no-no and he’s under doctor’s orders. Wise.

George Clooney has long been one of Hollywood's most magnetic screen presences, admired for his refined charm and striking looks. Julia Roberts defended her new film “After the Hunt” at a heated Venice Film Festival press conference, where the star was questioned about the movie’s statements surrounding the #MeToo movement and cancel culture.
In the thriller, set in the world of higher education, Roberts stars as a beloved college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when her mentee (Ayo Edebiri) accuses a friend and colleague (Andrew Garfield) of crossing a line.
Roberts waved off an early question about whether “After the Hunt” was undermining the feminist movement. The journalist who raised the question said the movie had “caused controversy” among festivalgoers who felt the story “revives old arguments” about believing woman who speak up about sexual assault allegations.
