Following the release of his recent directorial effort The Prosecutor, and amid the news that he could helm his upcoming John Wick spin-off, it might be a good idea for Donnie Yen fans to check out his other, recent martial arts action epic. Which he both directed and stars in, of course. Titled Sakra, the action outing was released in 2023 and sees Yen take the helm of this wuxia film, which can now be found on a variety of streaming platforms.

Directed by Donnie Yen in his first directorial effort for two decades, Sakra is available to stream on Apple TV, Hi-yah, and more in the United States and Prime Video in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Blending drama, fantasy and action can make for an entertaining story if done correctly. It can also highlight the personal journey of a character, which his precisely what “The Tai Chi Master” (not to be confused with the Jet Li-movie) is about. Set in a period of great turmoil the movie is perhaps the ideal entertainment vehicle, following the well-known structure of these stories. Directors Siyu Cheng and Zhenzhao Lin certainly have experience in the genre, with the latter having helmed some of the most popular genre features such as “Detective Dee’s Hell Road” and “Restart the Earth”.

Donnie Yen just recently got his first truly substantial role in an American production where he and Keanu Reeves tear up baddies and each other in the freshly released John Wick: Chapter 4. Yen plays an assassin so skilled that even his blindness doesn’t hinder him. That movie is a love letter to Hong Kong action cinema and features a cute reference to a sub-genre of martial arts films, Wuxia. After almost twenty years since his comedy feature Protégé de la Rose Noire (2004), kung-fu legend Donnie Yen is back in the director’s chair for Śakra. This time not only is he directing the wuxia epic, he’s also lead actor and co-producer with his longtime collaborator, Wong Jing (Chasing the Dragon).

This big-budget action blockbuster is adapted from the classic novel, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, by master wuxia novelist Jin Yong.

Est Studios, the film company established this year by 88Rising co-founder Jaeson Ma and former Vice Media executive Eric Tu, has struck a partnership arrangement with China’s Hugoeast Media.

The partnership is looking at an initial slate of eight projects, with Est Studios representing sales at the major film markets including the upcoming Asian Contents and Film Market and Asian Project Market at the Busan International Film Festival.

Est will be the exclusive representative for Hugoeast’s titles in North America. In other territories (outside of China) it will handle them on a non-exclusive basis.

The first title on the sales slate is “B For Busy,” which will have its international premiere in Busan on Oct. 6, 2022, as part of the A Window on Asian Cinema section. The sturdy but shallow martial arts melodrama “Ip Man 4: The Finale” isn’t much more than what fans have already gotten from the popular action franchise.

In their latest collaboration, series director Wilson Yip (2011’s “A Chinese Ghost Story”) and star Donnie Yen stick to their already established formula: their version of real-life Wing Chun instructor Man Ip (Yen) fights anybody who dismisses kung fu.
