‘Help’ & ‘His Dark Materials’ Writer Jack Thorne Handed Wggb Outstanding Contribution Award; Emerald Fennell, Russell T Davies, Armando Iannucci Also Among Winners
Image
His Dark Materials and Help writer Jack Thorne has been recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Writing at tonight’s 29th Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards (WGGBAs), with Russell T Davies, Emerald Fennell and Armando Iannucci also taking home gongs.

The prolific Thorne, who delivered this year’s Edinburgh Television Festival MacTaggart lecture, was presented with the prestigious trophy by His Dark Materials exec and Bad Wolf Co-Founder Jane Tranter, following a two-decades-long career in which he has penned some of the UK’s most critically-acclaimed hits including This is England, Shameless and The Virtues.

“I think all writers would say that being given something from other writers is the greatest honor,” said Thorne. “I don’t think I’ve really contributed anything much in this strange career, and writing is a really strange job, but I’m grateful, and slightly anxious, to now have this award to live up to.

Campaigners Deliver 1.5 Million-Signature Petition to End China’s Yulin Dog Meat Festival
Dame Judi Dench and violinist Vanessa-Mae have sent heart-felt messages of support and solidarity for a 1.5 million-signature petition by Care2 and Humane Society International, delivered to the Chinese Embassy by dogs rescued from China’s annual Yulin dog meat festival.

The festival, which starts on 21st June, sees thousands of dogs and cats beaten to death and eaten, most of them stolen pets grabbed from back yards and the streets. Most people in China don’t eat dogs, and pet owners and dog thieves have had numerous violent clashes.

Snorki, Fred and two dogs named Lily were saved from Yulin slaughterhouses in 2016 and 2018 by Chinese partner groups supported by animal charity Humane Society International. Hsi and the ‘ambassadogs’ were joined by petition partners Care2 as well as Clacton MP Giles Watling who shares the campaigners’ desire to see urgent action to end the gruesome spectacle of Yulin.

Bread actor Giles Watling running as Conservative candidate in Clacton
Actor Giles Watling has been chosen as the Conservative candidate in the Clacton by-election.

Watling is best known for playing Oswald in the 1980s sitcom Bread, and is now a Tory councillor.

He was selected at an open primary in constituency, ahead of local councillor Sue Lissimore.

The Clacton by-election is being held after sitting Tory MP Douglas Carswell defected to Ukip.

The vote will be held on October 9.

When asked by BBC News if an actor could be trusted as an MP, Watling said: "Of course," adding that actors have "been around for thousands of years".

His Bread character Oswald was a vicar who eventually married Aveline, the only daughter of the Roman Catholic Boswell family in Liverpool.

Oswald and Aveline's wedding episode was seen by 21 million viewers at the time in 1988.

Watling has also had roles in How's Your Father?, Grange Hill and 'Allo 'Allo.
