‘Bionic’ 2024 Film Cast And Character Guide
Image
Netflix dares everyone to imagine that there will be a time when para-athletes will take over the sports scene with fancy and state-of-the-art implants that make them so much stronger and better than regular athletes. Afonso Poyart’s sci-fi sports flick Bionic is mainly based in Brazil, where the protagonist, Maria Santos, gets involved in the world of crime while trying to reach the pinnacle of long jumping. Let’s take a look at the cast and characters of this new Netflix release.

Jessica Cores as Maria Santos

Jessica Cores is known for playing Camila in the Brazilian fantasy series Invisible City, also a Netflix original. Cores stars as the sole protagonist of Bionic, and she is convincing as an athlete who was meant to be at the top of the world. Maria Santos is a physical specimen, and if not for the Bionic Revolution, she’d have won plenty...

Netflix Trailer for Brazilian Dystopian Sci-Fi Movie 'Bionic' Set in 2035
Image
"We're gonna change the world, Maria." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for an upcoming sci-fi movie called Bionic, the first Brazilian (sci-fi) movie of its kind produced by Netflix, featuring (what they claim are) "innovative visual effects." This is set to drop on Netflix in just a few weeks coming up at the end of May - not too long of a wait at all. The year is 2035 and the world has been transformed by technology. In this dystopian future where these robotic prosthetics redefine sports, two sisters compete in long jump — but their rivalry leads them down a sinister path. The story focuses on one sister named Maria who rejects the bionic enhancements. Starring Jessica Córes, Gabz, Bruno Gagliasso, Christian Malheiros, Paulo Vilhena, Danton Mello, and Klebber Toledo. In Bionic, ambition, moral dilemmas and family conflicts unfold in a cyberpunk setting, with numerous adrenaline-filled action scenes. Bionic tech...

‘Overhaul’ Review (Netflix)
Image
Stars: Thiago Martins, Raphael Logam, Sheron Menezzes, Evandro Mesquita, Milhem Cortez, Paulo Vilhena | Written by Leandro Soares | Directed by Tomas Portella

Do you know what we don’t get enough in movies? Vehicle-based heists. I jest of course but Overhaul (originally titled Cargo Maxima in its native Brazil) feels very much like yet another entry in the Fast & Furious franchise… Well, before it dropped the “and the” from the title! Yes, this is a throwback to the more basic, less “out of this world” antics of the early Vin Diesel films, when it was all about the car racing/cop chase action rather than unbelievable superhero-esque antics of Dom and co. in the more recent franchise entries.

The plot is pretty simple. Truck racer – yes you read that right – Truck racer, Roger Matos (Thiago Martins) is suffering in both his personal and professional life and when his father dies...

Vogue Brazil Under Fire for Photoshopping Models to Look Disabled
Vogue Brazil has come under fire for a spread in its September issue to commemorate the beginning of the Paralympic Games in Rio. The spread features two actors, Cleo Pires and Paulo Vilhena, who appear to have disabilities — Pires has her right arm amputated, and Vilhena displays a prosthetic leg. The problem is, the disabilities are mere Photoshop illusions — both Pires and Vilhena are able-bodied. In the spread, the models are also pictured with two Paralympic athletes whose disabilities they were digitally altered to resemble — table tennis player Bruna Alexandre, who has an amputated arm, and sitting volleyball...

Film review: The Ballroom
This samba-fuelled slice-of-life set in a old-style Brazilian dancehall is an entertaining, and occasionally heart-rending, film, says Andrew Pulver

This affectionate tribute to old-style Brazilian dancehalls is powered by a cheerful samba soundtrack, and the participation of a seemingly ageless Elza Soares, who belts out numbers in the guise of a low-rent house band crooner. Against this pungently authentic backdrop we are guided through a somewhat fraught evening in one such dancehall in Sao Paulo: the clientele are defiantly of a certain age, but still hanging in there for love and action. Stories interlock and criss-cross: Marici (Cássia Kiss) is expecting a final consummation with roué Eudes (Stepan Nercessian), but he is fatally distracted by the decades-younger Bel (Maria Flor). Bel has only turned up to help her DJ boyfriend Marquinhos (Paulo Vilhena) who, despite the age gap, is neurotically threatened by Eudes's old-school moves. This is merely a selection:...
