He was a lifelong bachelor but for 40 years had an off-and-on relationship with actress Milicent Patrick until his death in 1980.

The hearse containing his body was stolen on the way to the mortuary. Involved in a fender bender, the vehicle was stolen by carjackers while information was being exchanged by the occupants of the vehicles. The car and the body were found shortly after.

Was in four Oscar Best Picture nominees: Ninotchka (1939), Il sergente York (1941), Ribalta di gloria (1942), and Il romanzo di Mildred (1945).

He appeared in both Ninotchka (1939) and La bella di Mosca (1957), its musical remake.

In Notre Dame (1939), Tobias is credited only as playing a beggar. However, he also can be seen as playing one of the workmen doing renovation work in Notre Dame Cathedral.
