Johanna ter Steege

Was cast as the lead character of Tania in Stanley Kubrick's Aryan Papers, a Holocaust film based on the novel Wartime Lies by Louis Begley. The project was only weeks from production in Slovakia when Kubrick canceled it, not wanting it to come out after Schindler's List (1993) which had just been released. He had a similar experience with Full Metal Jacket (1987) which came out just after Platoon (1986).

[on Stanley Kubrick's Aryan Papers] I don't regret what happened. I still feel it as a huge compliment. It was a wonderful experience. The ending was very painful. There was a huge future... then it felt like a balloon was suddenly burst. Then, that's it. You have to go on. Not for the first time in my life, I realized that personal happiness has nothing to do with success.
