Australia’s Andrew Jackson takes home Academy Award for ‘Tenet’
Image
Australia is toasting its newest Academy Award winner in Andrew Jackson, recognised as part of the visual effects team on Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.

The UK-based visual effects supervisor joined colleagues David Lee and Andrew Lockley in London while Scott Fisher accepted the Visual Effects Oscar on behalf of the group at a subdued ceremony in Los Angeles.

They beat out Australia’s other hope in the category – Love and Monsters‘ Matt Sloan, Genevieve Camilleri, Matt Everitt, and Brian Cox – as well as teams from George Clooney’s Midnight Sky, Nick Caro’s Mulan, and Thea Sharrock’s The One and Only Ivan.

It’s the first win and second nomination for Jackson, who was part of VFX team for Mad Max: Fury Road that lost out to Ex Machina in 2016.

The unprecedented impact of the pandemic on the film industry was reflected in the 93rd Academy Awards, which featured...

Oscars 2021: The Complete Winners List
Image
Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.

“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.

“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

Unlike other awards shows during the Covid-19 pandemic, Hollywood’s biggest night was held in person, and televised live on ABC from the...

An Oscar would be the ‘cherry on top’ for ‘Love and Monsters’ VFX team
Image
Australia might just be in for an Academy Award win come Monday, with Love and Monsters tipped as a dark horse in this year’s race for the Visual Effects Oscar.

Matt Sloan, Genevieve Camilleri, Matt Everitt and Brian Cox are on the ballot for their work crafting giant, mutated creatures for the Brisbane-shot post-apocalyptic film, each imbued with its own individual characteristics and unique personality.

But while it might be easy to assume Love and Monsters is a creature feature at first glance, VFX supervisor Sloan says director Michael Matthews made it clear at the outset the film was “not about monsters.”

A comedy adventure, Love and Monsters is set in a world where humans have been forced underground after giant creatures took control of the land.

Dylan O’Brien stars as Joel, who reconnects over the radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick). Aiming to rekindle their romance,...

2021 Oscars: Best Visual Effects nominees include 3 champs, 3 veterans and 14 rookies
Image
The films in the running for the 2021 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “Love and Monsters,” “The Midnight Sky,” “Mulan,” “The One and Only Ivan,” and “Tenet.” Our odds currently indicate that “Tenet” (31/10) will be the winner, followed in order by “The Midnight Sky” (39/10), “Mulan” (9/2), “The One and Only Ivan” (9/2), and “Love and Monsters” (9/2).

Included among the 20 individuals in this year’s lineup are six past nominees, three of whom have triumphed here at least once before. The “Love and Monsters” team consists entirely of rookie nominees. The remaining 10 first-timers are: Matthew Kasmir, Max Solomon, and David Watkins (“The Midnight Sky”), Sean Faden, Steve Ingram, and Seth Maury (“Mulan”), Santiago Colomo Martinez, Greg Fisher, and Ben Jones (“The One and Only Ivan”), and David Lee (“Tenet”).

After collecting a pair of prizes for “Inception” (2011) and “Interstellar” (2015), Andrew Lockley (“Tenet”) has earned a third bid for a collaboration with writer-director Christopher Nolan...

How ‘Love and Monsters’ Became the Dark Horse in the Visual Effects Oscar Race
Image
“Love and Monsters,” the post-apocalyptic, sci-fi comedy about giant mutants, has become the surprise dark horse in the Visual Effects Oscar race. That’s because it was a standout at the virtual bake-off. “The spirit of the award should go to ‘Love and Monsters,'” said one anonymous voter. “It was fun, entertaining, well done, and relied on VFX to sell and create the experience.”

It certainly helped that “Love and Monsters” evoked the spirit of legendary Ray Harryhausen in the design of the giant creatures. “We had broad stroke personality traits for each creature [from director Michael Matthews], and that’s where the animation team went to work,” said production VFX supervisor Matt Sloan.

In “Love and Monsters,” Joel (Dylan O’Brien of “The Maze Runner”) emerges from seven years of underground isolation after a monster apocalypse and on a quest to find his girlfriend (Jessica Henwick) survives a series of creature...

VFX Team’s Loving Look for ‘Monsters’
Image
For “Love and Monsters,” the film’s VFX team, led by Matt Sloan, had to devise 13 different monsters, each with a unique look.

“Each had its own design rules and personality. From gross little leech-like slug worms to the misunderstood monstrous crab in the finale,” Sloan says.

Familiarity was the key to the art department’s designs. Each creature had to be recognizable as something that could have mutated from creatures that exist today — cockroaches, frogs, centipedes and other insects.

“A lot of research went into studying bugs, eels, crabs and a lot of video reference — including a compilation video of dead bloated whales exploding from their internal pressure.”

From there it was about mixing in scars, dirt and imperfections that added up to a high degree of detail.

“On the crab, there is a six-pack ring stuck on his horn and an old crab trap [that he mutated out of] on his leg,” Sloan says.

Visual Effects Surprise Oscar Nominations Make This Race Too Tight to Call
Image
A surprise to Oscar watchers on nomination morning was “Love and Monsters” landing a visual effects nomination.

It was the first nomination for Mr. X, the company behind the effects of the film. The monster movie was a mix of special and visual effects. In all, more than 550 VFX shots used. Genevieve Camilleri, VFX supervisor, says the filming locations across Queensland, Australia, guided the team’s approach to the effects. “These unique environments informed how we would scale the creatures to their settings and how they would interact with the film’s post-apocalyptic landscape,” she says.

In the post-apocalyptic film, the monsters are not new creatures, they are mutated from existing insects and bugs that roamed the earth. Camilleri and the Mr. X team created over 13 different creatures.

Director Michael Matthews relied on the team to bring them to life. “We focused in on the fine details of their sensory...

Australians in the hunt for visual effects Oscar as ‘Mank’ leads the nominations
Image
Aussie visual effects talent has been recognised in Monday’s Oscars nominations.

Matt Everitt, Genevieve Camilleri, Matt Sloan, and Brian Cox have earned a nod for their work on Love and Monsters, while the UK-based Andrew Jackson is nominated as part of the VFX team on Tenet.

Camilleri is only the fourth woman to be nominated in the category in Oscar history.

Others weren’t as lucky, with editor Kirk Baxter (Mank), screenwriter Luke Davies (News of the World), and cinematographer Lachlan Milne (Minari) each missing out.

While Baxter was overlooked, it didn’t stop David Fincher’s biopic of Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz from leading the nominations, with the Netflix film up for 10 awards, including Best Picture, at the April 25 ceremony.

Also well represented are The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7, each of which earned six nods.
