Never judge a book by its cover -- unless it's a comic book, then please judge away. When you pick up a title from Marvel or DC Comics, the cover makes all the difference. It holds the ability to sell you the book in an instant, or it could be the equivalent of garlic to a vampire if it looks about as boring as two tree branches locked in a staring contest. The cover needs to convince you that what you're about to page through is both a must-read and must-buy experience.
Publishers understand the importance of covers, hence using different approaches like wraparound covers, foil variants, and embossed designs. While these add a visual impact and collector's appeal, it only works if the cover asserts itself as iconic. Now, the question is, how does one determine that? That's easy -- you look at its influence on pop culture and...

Captain America has always been a political symbol in Marvel Comics, and co-creator Joe Simon confirms that the famed hero is a direct response to the rising force of fascism during World War II.
The comic book artist revealed that their awareness of what was happening in Europe compelled them to create the perfect villain, i.e., Adolf Hitler. Steve Rogers’ first appearance in Captain America Comics #1 (1941) saw him decking the leader of the Nazi Party. This move, however, did not impress some people (via Cracked):
But when Captain America came out, America wasn’t yet in the war, so the American Nazis weren’t happy with what we did to their beloved Fuhrer. We had a couple of personal encounters with the Bund. But that didn’t stop us. If anything, it added fuel to the fire.
Despite the controversy, the writers continued voicing their political opinions in the most creative way.

Captain America is one of the pillars of Marvel Comics. Retroactively, he's one of the first superheroes of the Marvel Comics shared universe, and since the 2010s, he's been elevated into a full-blown pop cultural icon thanks to Chris Evans' portrayal in the "Captain America" movies.
But Evans was not the first silver screen Captain America. There was a 1944 "Captain America" film serial starring Dick Purcell, two 1979 "Captain America" TV films starring Reb Brown, and a pretty disastrous 1990 "Captain America" film. If that one had been a hit, maybe Cap wouldn't have been one of the few main Marvel heroes not to get a cartoon series in the 1990s.
As it stands, Captain America has never had a solo cartoon series. Yup, you read that right. Oh sure, Cap has appeared in many cartoons. He was one of the rotating stars of the 1966 cartoon "The Marvel Superheroes," which added rough...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has, for the better part of its existence, been so mired in groundbreaking worldbuilding that it has reoriented and restructured the entire format of storytelling for major Hollywood franchises. Kevin Feige, the godfather of this new revisionist format, has reigned over the MCU with a keen eye for nearly 2 decades now, but with time comes change.

Recently, Rob Liefeld cut ties with Marvel, citing mistreatment by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. He felt snubbed at the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere in July 2024, where he and his family were excluded from the afterparty, professional photos of him were deleted, and he received no red carpet acknowledgment.
His issues with Marvel date back to 2023 when the company credited Roy Thomas as a co-creator of Wolverine, upsetting Liefeld, who was close to Len Wein’s widow. In 2024, he requested more prominent credit for Deadpool & Wolverine, but Marvel reportedly reacted negatively, leading to further fallout.
Despite his long history with Marvel, which included significant contributions to Deadpool and Cable, Liefeld ultimately decided to sever ties due to ongoing tensions and perceived disrespect.

Though they are now most associated with massive blockbusters, superheroes were politically-minded creations from the start, and the early heroes were more subversive than we give them credit for. Wonder Woman was created by psychologist William Moulton Marston, who lived together with two women some think were also romantically involved with each other. He explicitly created Wonder Woman to teach girls and boys about the importance of feminism and was inspired by first-wave activists and artists.
On the cover of the first issue of "Captain America Comics," the titular hero is shown punching Hitler in the face. Creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created the character as an anti-Nazi figure, as Simon strongly opposed non-interventionism during World War II and wanted the hero to reflect these views. That continues today, as many have also read Marvel's "Civil War" series as a direct commentary on the Patriot Act.

Plenty of Marvel Cinematic Universe fans love Peggy Carter, but arguably just as many would've preferred that Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) end up with the other love of his life: Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). The silver screen versions of Steve and Bucky are childhood friends and about the same age; Bucky has known Steve since before he got juiced with the Super Soldier Serum, and had spent those years protecting him from plenty of ass-kickings. Movie fans might get the sense that Cap looked up to Bucky ... which is the complete opposite of the original comics.
In those, Bucky is several years younger than Steve. He wasn't Captain America's best friend, he was his kid sidekick. They first met at Fort LeHigh, where Bucky (the orphaned son of a soldier) was living. Depending on the telling, he was either directly assigned to Cap's side, or lucked into the...

Captain America first debuted in Jack Kirby and Joe Simon's "Captain America Comics" #1. Hitting newsstands at the tail end of 1940, the comic's cover page showed its flag-draped hero punching out Adolf Hitler.
Since then, most of Captain America's enduring enemies have been fictional Nazis, from the Red Skull to Baron Zemo. But not all fascists come from Germany. The U.S. has spent the last decade getting that rude awakening over and over, and stubbornly refusing to listen, but it's one that Captain America heard much earlier, and heeded, back in 1974. Creature Commandos has been an excellent start for James Gunn's Dcu. Throughout the series, viewers have been given a hint of a fully lived-in DC Universe with a rich history that stretches far beyond the story's events. It draws from real-world history and the rich legacy of DC Comics as a publishing institution, tapping into an important part of the superhero stories that sometimes get overlooked. Marvel put Captain America on the map when they allowed him to punch Adolf Hitler in the face, but DC Comics returned Hitler himself to the map decades later. Captain America Comics #1 by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby marked the title character's first appearance, famously gracing the cover by giving the planet's most evil man a punch right to the kisser. Comic book adaptations have been around since the early 1940s, existing as serials for DC and Marvel's most popular characters, like Batman, Captain Marvel, Captain America and Superman - and 2025 marks some key announcements for several classic releases. Since the inception of comic book films, the genre's landscape has shifted drastically with landmark films like Batman (1989), Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, The Dark Knight, and the films in the MCU timeline.
Things will continue to shift even more with James Gunn's Dcu and Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Still, it's nice to look back on what came before in terms of comic book movie adaptations, and in 2025 there are some that will have significant birthdays. Who is the creator of the Marvel Comics universe? It's a trick question, with too many possible answers for a correct one, but most would probably say former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Stan Lee. Others, though, will contend more credit should go to Lee's greatest collaborator (with apologies to Steve Ditko): Jack Kirby. In "Fantastic Four," writer Mark Waid and artist Mike Wieringo depicted the Marvel Universe's God, the one above all, as being Jack Kirby himself.
The co-creator of Captain America with Joe Simon back in the day, Kirby saw his most prolific work in the 1960s. He and Lee created the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, Galactus and the Silver Surfer, the Hulk, the X-Men, Magneto, the Mighty Thor, and more. The dispute comes from the idea that Lee misrepresented his earned credit; that Kirby was doing most of the work and Lee was only performing his duties as an editor.

Warning: Spoilers for Nyx #5Regardless of their creators' original intent, the X-Men have always been a team that promotes the importance of civil rights and social equality. When Chris Claremont became the franchise's focal writer in the 1980s, the X-Men became an analogy for the United States tumultuous civil rights issues. However, after two decades of moving away from Claremonts vision, the X-Men are finally returning to their most important themes.
Following the Fall of X, writers like Jed MacKay, Gail Simone, and especially Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing have returned the X-Men to smaller-scale series, allowing for more intimate stories - like in Nyx #5 by Kelly, Lanzing, Francesco Mortarino, Elisabetta D'Amico, Ral Angulo, and Joe Sabino, which features a clash between humans and mutants at a protest.

Steve Rogers is the most famous super soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there are many other characters who were injected with the infamous Super Soldier Serum. Developed by Abraham Erskine, the serum completely changed history and became a target for several individuals and governments. Several known superheros and villains across the MCU movies owe their power to Erskine's serum, though his imitators never quite got the formula quite as right.
The success of Abraham Erskine's Super Soldier Serum did bring about copycats and other attempts at creating super soldiers. Extremis and Calvin Zabo's formula are just a few power-granting serums that tried to replicate Erskine's but did not directly borrow from his science. Bruce Banner did come close to replicating it but added gamma radiation to the mix, leading him to become the Hulk. However, Erskine's Super Soldier Serum is responsible for the creation of some of the...

Being Captain America means standing for all that America means - and yet it looks like there's an even more All-American hero looking to take Steve Rogers' place in a new variant cover. In a surprise to every comic fan, it seems as if the Thing has squeezed into the red, white, and blue tights - and he looks better than imagined.
In a series of Marvel variant covers for titles coming out in the near future, the Thing of the Fantastic Four is slipping into comics and stealing heroes' looks in a hilarious way. One of the best is the Thing's appearance on Pete Woods' variant cover for Captain America #15 (by J. Michael Straczynski and Jess Saz). What previously would have been just a silly joke is starting to look a little too good for its own good.

Thunderbolts* explores the underbelly of MCU heroism, depicting conflicted characters who lack the idealism of the Avengers. It brings together antiheroes, former villains, and morally complex figures who have already been established in the MCU timeline. The MCUs Thunderbolts* movie depicts the eponymous team, operating in the shadows and taking on missions that more conventional heroes might shy away from.
The Thunderbolts first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #449 in 1997, created by writer Kurt Busiek and artist Mark Bagley. In their original incarnation, the team was led by Baron Zemo, who formed the group to fill the void left by the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. Since Spider-Man first entered the world of big budget blockbusters in 2002's Spider-Man, the wall-crawler has continued to prove himself one of Marvel's most popular characters and one of cinema's most spectacular superheroes, regardless of who's behind the mask. First portrayed by Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, Spidey has since been played by Andrew Garfield in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man movies, Tom Holland in the MCU and by various actors in the animated Spider-Verse movies. Whether Peter Parker or Miles Morales, live-action or animation, or in a solo movie or a crossover event, Spider-Man has continued to capture audiences' imaginations for the past 22 years of his cinematic career.
After the Spider-Man trilogy brought the wall-crawler and some of his all-time greatest foes to life on the big screen, the Amazing Spider-Man movies gave audiences a revitalized modern look at Peter Parker's adventures and his personal relationships.

The idea of Captain America was born of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, who first appeared in Captain America Comics #1, published by Timely Comics. The character is one of the most popular superheroes created and has managed to capture a big fanbase.
Steve Rogers, who takes on the mantle of Captain America, was once a frail, asthmatic boy who wanted to do his part in helping the Allies win against the Nazis. He takes on a super-soldier serum that changes his physiology and turns himself to his peak physical form.

In the comics, the character is a lot more grittier. Over the years, many instances have shown us how different he is from MCU’s Captain America, who is toned down a lot. He is superhuman, with a vibranium shield, and fights off humans and aliens alike, whoever threatens Earth.

Until now, Homelander has been the only one to mimic Captain America’s righteous star-spangled banner routine, although in a diabolically psychopathic light. However, with the coming of a new age, it seems that Batman is also getting in on the game. DC is finally going toe-to-toe with Captain America himself with their own version: Commander Star.

The superheroes of Marvel wouldn't all have the same color of lightsabers if they were in the Star Wars galaxy. There are several different colors a lightsaber can be, and they all have different symbolism and origins that make them unique. Multiple parts of Marvel's superheroes, from their backstories and origins to their personalities and self-image, would factor into what color lightsaber they would wield.

Captain America's villains have universe-altering quotes that challenge the Marvel hero throughout his story. The range of villains Captain America faces ensures that he grows immensely over the course of his arc. The likes of Red Skull, the Winter Soldier and Baron Zemo have impactful lines that carry a lot of implications not just for Captain America, but also for the entire franchise.
Captain America has some of the most important movies in the MCU, containing some memorable villains with universe-altering quotes throughout. With each movie of the trilogy having a significant impact on the universe as a whole, it's no wonder why Captain America's franchise remains high up on the list of the best Marvel movies of all time. A fairly common criticism of the MCU timeline is its lack of great villains, but Cap's tend to standout due to their ideals and how they go about accomplishing their goals.

"The Captain" storyline sees Steve Rogers step down as Captain America due to government obligations, showcasing his independence and principled spirit. "Castaway in Dimension Z" takes Cap on a sci-fi adventure in an alternate dimension, highlighting his struggle as a new father and survivor. "Winter Soldier" by Ed Brubaker changes Cap's lore forever by bringing back Bucky as a brainwashed assassin, grounding the character in modern espionage.

What do "Happy Days" and "M*A*S*H" have in common? Well, for one thing, they're both era-defining TV shows of the 1970s that took place in the 1950s. "M*A*S*H" was set during the Korean War (even if its satirical target was the more recent Vietnam War), which unfolded from 1950 to 1953. It's a well-known joke that thanks to its 11-season run (1972 to 1983), the series lasted longer than the war it was set in.
That's not the only historical incongruity in "M*A*S*H" — there's a small but telling one in season 4, episode 21, "The Novocaine Mutiny," as first noted in "TV's M*A*S*H: The Ultimate Guide Book" by Ed Solomonson and Mark O'Neill. Marvel's Captain America is emblematic in terms of strength, unbreakable resolve, and determination. While not endowed with the natural superhuman abilities wielded by many of Marvel's characters, his abilities transcend physical prowess; they encompass the ideals and values he upholds in the face of adversity. Different sources depict the character's strength level differently, but there are some clear indications of just how strong Captain America is in Marvel canon.
Steve Rogers is a fierce opponent not just due to his strength but because he knows how to control and enhance every aspect of it with unshakable willpower.
In the official Marvel canon, the super-soldier serum administered during World War II transformed Steve Rogers into the pinnacle of human physicality, allowing him to endure physical punishment that would incapacitate most.

Stan Lee narrates his own amazing life story in a fun and creatively produced documentary that purposely skirts controversy. Director David Gelb celebrates the 100th anniversary of Lee's birth with a breezy retrospective of an extraordinary man. Models, animation, audio recordings, and extensive archival footage are used to paint a wholesome picture of a beloved cultural icon. Lee takes you from his impoverished childhood through the decades of building Marvel Comics to a household brand. It's a Wikipedia approach that doesn't delve too deep but gives an adequate and enjoyable summary of greatness.
Stan Lee appears with his mustache, dark glasses, and warm, fatherly smile. He recounts staring at a fly crawling on the wall as a boy. He imagined a hero with incredible powers but not unlike the average person. They would need a job, pay bills, and deal with everyday stress. Lee wanted stories for the real world.

For a lot of people around the world, Stan Lee used to be the goofy old guy who cameoed in every single Marvel movie until his death back in December 2018. He made one posthumous appearance in Avengers: Endgame (2019), but even after that, the MCU managed to find creative ways to pay tribute to Lee in many of their projects.
Lee’s legacy goes far beyond the MCU, of course. It’s safe to say that the man will forever be remembered as the person who made Marvel Comics what it is. A documentary on the man’s life was long-time due, and we finally have it,...

Face front, true believers! Here’s an interesting lil’ tidbit about the current cinema landscape. Just who has been the major part of several huge box office hits over the last fifteen years? Well, we’re not talking about an actor, or a filmmaker, or a studio exec. Oh, and he left the planet almost five years ago. Okay, you got it, I’m talking about the comic book writing superstar who co-created almost the entire staple of Marvel superheroes. And he became a fun bit of business in the screen adaptations of those characters by popping up in brief cameo roles (I made it a game with my nephews to nudge me when he flashed that big grin). He’s been profiled by several TV newsmagazine shows and mini-bios, but now he’s getting the full feature-length documentary treatment with the simply titled Stan Lee. Excelsior!

“Stan Lee” — a documentary on the man who, along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, created Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther and many other iconic Marvel characters —
selectively focuses on the comic book legend’s career and, to a much lesser extent, his personal life, pruning considerable information about his other ventures and legal disputes as seen on Wikipedia. It’s co-produced by Marvel Studios, so the film, which receives its world premiere at Tribeca Festival and streams on Disney Plus on June 16, expectedly sings his praises.
Lee himself posthumously supplies the first-person voiceover narration, albeit indirectly through various archival interviews and speeches given over the years, which filmmaker David Gelb (“Jiro Dreams of Sushi”) has carefully spliced together based on the chronology of seminal events in his lifetime. To illustrate the narration, Gelb has employed conventional archival footage and photos as well as not-so-conventional comic strips and clay figures.

Steve Rogers gained the body of an Olympic athlete when he became Captain America, but the MCU Steve Rogers may have gained superpowers as well. The Captain America of the comics was meant to be the pinnacle of human achievement, with a heroic heart and athletic physique. However, there are several instances in the movies which suggest the MCU Captain America has superpowers, including enhanced strength and stamina.
Created by comics' legends Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the Steve Rogers of the comics was meant to be a more realistic hero that ordinary children could aspire to be like. Much like DC Comics' Batman, the Steve Rogers of the comics is highly trained, but has no intrinsic abilities that mark him as more than human. While the Super Soldier Serum transformed Steve Rogers into a peak human athlete, it did not give him any powers beyond those which any soldier...

Wesley Dodds, the Golden Age Sandman, will return this fall in a brand-new miniseries,as part of DC Comics’ larger New Golden Age initiative. This new book will be a return to glory for the character, who has not headlined his own title in more than 25 years. Wesley Dodds: The Sandman will spotlight Dodds at a vital moment in his career, when his greatest invention could also spell doom for humanity.
DC has released more information on the October-shipping title, including a look at the first issue’s cover, shared below. Written by Robert Venditti and drawn by Riley Rossmo, the book casts Dodds as a “pacifist,” albeit one who has given up on dreams of a peaceful world. However, Dodds has not given up on other people, believing they will do the right thing if given the right tools and circumstances. He also believes in the concept of “humane warfare.
