Her book, Karlas kabale comes to the stage in her home town, Aarhus in November 2014. Her husband, Thomas Helmig has written music to the play.

Besides their son, Hugo, (born 1998) both Renée and Thomas Helmig brought children into their marriage from previous relationships: Renée her daughter, Ulrikke Toft Simonsen (born 1993) and son, Jens-Kristian (born 1995) from a five years relationship to businessman Kristian Sandvad. And Thomas Helmig his daughter, Ida Marie (born 1992) with his second wife, Heidi Andersen, a model.

Discovered at 15 in her native Denmark, Simonsen was the 1982 "Face of the '80s" modeling contest winner.

Renée and Thomas Helmig were separated for three months during 2013 but have since reconciled.
