Debuted professionally, as a comedy dancer at the Chin Lee's Restaurant in New York City, at the age of 15. Before becoming an actor, he danced for 14 years and was part of the 'Shea & Raymond' duo, which became one of the top dance teams in the country. They toured the U.S. and Europe and performed with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, among others.

Appeared several times on Broadway and joined the PCPA Theaterfest acting company, in Santa Maria (CA), for the 1982 fall/spring season of a six-play stint that included a revival of the musical 'Oliver'.

Won rave reviews for the role of 'Milton Perry' in Mark Harelik's regional theater production "The Immigrant." The play, co-starring his wife, Ann Morgan Guilbert, as his onstage spouse, was performed in 1986 at Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum, and also in Denver and Washington.

Played a comic book type gangster on the 1954 original stage production of 'Mrs. McThing', starring Helen Hayes. This experience led him to switch to an acting career. He would reprise the role on Mrs. McThing (1958), an episode of the Omnibus (1952) TV series.

Played 'Mr. Pruitt' on Autumn margarine's TV commercials, boasting the slogan "Tastes like Pruitt grew it!".
