The Runarounds Ending Explained: Do the Runarounds Break up?
Image
Created by Jonas Pate, Prime Video’s ‘The Runarounds’ chronicles the story of a high school band that blossoms into something much more over the course of one summer. With Charlie as the frontman, Neil and Topher are on the electric, and Wyatt is on the bass as Bez lights things on fire with his drumset, the stage seems to be set for success. However, with bigger challenges comes the realization that carving one’s identity in the creative industry is not easy. Love, family, and professional troubles become more than just obstacles, but instead life lessons in this coming-of-age narrative. The season finale, titled ‘Kill Devil’, carefully weaves all...

Introducing ‘The Runarounds’: Meet the Cast of Prime Video’s Teen Rock Band Drama (Video)
Image
The Runarounds isn’t your ordinary teen drama. The Prime Video series, dropping on September 1, is ready to drum up some serious fun — and music. Not only does the show follow a group of North Carolina teens in a rock band… The Runarounds are a real-life band, too. (They’ll be heading out on their Minivan Tour in September.) Jeremy Yun and William Lipton, who play Topher and Charlie, have been making music together since they were kids. Zendé Murdock, Axel Ellis, and Jesse Golliher were hoping to score a cameo on Outer Banks, which was cocreated by The Runarounds boss Jonas Pate, and ended up forming a band with Yun and Lipton.

‘The Runarounds’ Cast and Crew Reveal How They Got the Real-Life Band’s Act Together
Image
“The Runarounds” may be the follow-up to Jonas Pate’s hit YA series “Outer Banks,” but there’s never been a show quite like it. That’s because this fictional story of how an up-and-coming High School rock band came to be is almost non-fiction, since the boys are actually a music group in real life, too.

William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock and Jesse Golliher star in the Rockfish Films, Skydance Television and Amazon MGM Studios co-production, which had its Los Angeles premiere at the Directors Guild of America theater complex on Tuesday night in Hollywood — followed by a live performance and after-party at The Roxy.

Hulu Adapting Best-Selling Novel The Summer Of Songbirds
Image
Netflix's Outer Banks will soon come to an end, but Hulu is developing a new show that could work as a suitable replacement. Debuting in April 2020, from co-creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, Outer Banks began by introducing viewers to the Kooks and the Pouges — two conflicting groups of teenagers in search of lost treasure.

Half a decade later, the adventure drama series is one of Netflix's most reliable hits. The fourth season was watched for more than a billion minutes in its debut week alone, taking the second spot in Nielsen's Streaming Top 10 Charts. But with Outer Banks season 5 confirmed to be the show's farewell outing, a new adaptation could help to fill the void.

Deadlinereports that Hulu is developing a TV adaptation of The Summer of Songebirds, the best-selling novel by Kristy Woodson Harvey. The story revolves around the power of forged family, focusing...

How Outer Banks Star Madelyn Cline Feels About Returning For A Spin-Off Netflix Series
Image
Madelyn Cline has successfully made the leap from television to film actor thanks to her roles in "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" and 2025's "I Know What You Did Last Summer" legacy sequel. But her calling card at this point is still breaking hearts on the small screen as Sarah Cameron on "Outer Banks." The production specifically wanted to avoid casting "theater kids" and instead focused on actors who genuinely felt like adventure-seeking kids in North Carolina. Cline, as it were, fit the bill perfectly as a native to the state who embodies Sarah, joining forces with local working-class teenagers who seek out treasure.

The show will return for a fifth and final season, but given the popularity of "Outer Banks" on Netflix, there's always the question of whether the story could continue in some other form, like a spin-off or legacy sequel series. While chatting with Screen Rant,...

The Runarounds (2025)
A young group of up-and-coming rock stars write love songs that could change the world in The Runarounds trailer
The Runarounds (2025)
As the lead singer of several bands throughout my middle school and high school career, I, too, have dreamt about making music that would turn heads. While each project had its time, it then faded away as my bandmates and I got older. I don’t regret a single moment spent on stage, much like the musicians-turned-actors featured in Jonas and Josh Pate’s latest television drama, The Runarounds. Prime Video debuted a trailer for The Runarounds yesterday, highlighting the newest project from the creators of Outer Banks.

Coming to Prime Video on September 1, The Runarounds stars real-life musicians William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock, and Jesse Golliher. They are at the center of the Pates’ coming-of-age drama, with fellow cast members Lilah Pate, Maximo Salas, Kelley Pereira, Marley Aliah, Mark Wystrach, Brooklyn Decker, Hayes MacArthur, and Shea Pritchard.

Why Netflix's Outer Banks Is Ending After Five Seasons — Was It Canceled?
Image
It's always a somewhat reassuring thing when the creators of a television show know how their story will end (or how they want it to end) right from the start. For any TV writer, it's a comforting thought to have a proper and, ideally, satisfying conclusion in mind that will bring a sense of closure to both their series' characters and viewers — not to mention, it also makes the writing process easier when you have an end point you can work towards.

However, many shows simply aren't lucky enough to see their plans through if, for whatever reason, their network or streaming service decides to cancel them earlier than expected. God knows that many excellent series have been prevented from saying a proper goodbye and having to wrap up their storylines the way they'd like to. Think of Paul Feig's quirky classic "Freaks and Geeks" or Gregory Thomas Garcia...

Netflix’s 79%-Rated Show Is Darwinism Delayed by Two Walking Cautionary Tales
Image
Netflix‘s wildly popular teen drama Outer Banks has always thrived on high-stakes adventures and mystery. The show currently boasts a 79% Rotten Tomatoes rating, follows a group of tight-knit underdogs called Pogues and wealthy residents called Kooks. Within this thrill ride, two characters stand out as walking cautionary tales: JJ Maybank and Kiara Carrera (Kie).

With four seasons of non-stop dangers, the show’s fast-paced plot kept fans hooked. From best friends to love birds, the two characters have always been equally reckless. JJ and Kie have pushed the boundaries of survival more than anyone. They have always made it out alive until one of them couldn’t in season 4.

Why Rudy Pankow's JJ Maybank Left Netflix's Outer Banks
Image
Netflix hits come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. They can be true crime thrillers, high-concept dramas, or some of the most popular reality TV programming around. But, one specific recurs in the most beloved shows, though: big swings on their way out, or rather around the time Netflix tells them it's time to wrap things up. In the case of "The Outer Banks," having Rudy Pankow's JJ Maybank die at the end of season 4 definitely qualifies as one of the aforementioned "big swings." "The Outer Banks'" series creators laid out why the decision was made, and they chose to kill off one of their most popular characters to elicit a visceral reaction. It worked, as evidenced by the fan outcry such a high-profile death was bound to produce.

Over the course of four seasons, "The Outer Banks" fans had grown to find Pankow's character, JJ Maybank,...

The Pogues will return for one last treasure hunt as production for Outer Banks Season 5 begins

Cue up some DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince because it’s summertime! To celebrate the first day of the sweltering season, Netflix is excited to announce that Outer Banks Season 5 production is underway! The fifth and final season of Outer Banks has begun production in Charleston, South Carolina, for a 2026 premiere on Netflix.

“Seven years ago, in the summer of 2017, we came across a photo of teenagers on a beach at dusk during a power outage. That photo sparked an idea for a story of four best friends who only want to have a good time all the time,” reads the statement. “From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure,...

The Pogues are back! Netflix revealed the first images from production on the fifth and final season of “Outer Banks” on Friday, depicting all of the Pogues — minus JJ.

Felix Mallard Flopped His Shot at Netflix’s 79%-Rated Hit Before Ginny & Georgia Fame

Before Ginny & Georgia made him a Netflix heartthrob, Felix Mallard actually missed his first big swing on the platform. Yep, long before playing Marcus, he was cast in another Netflix original that ended up scoring a solid 79% rating. But Mallard never showed up.

Whether it was timing, hesitation, or just a twist of fate, the opportunity slipped through his fingers. While the show moved on without him, Mallard eventually found his spotlight in Wellsbury. Still, it’s wild to think he almost broke out even earlier and with a totally different story to tell.

Outer Banks season 5 dealt disappointing update ahead of filming start
Image
Outer Banks season 5 might take a little bit longer to hit Netflix now.

According to a report from What's on Netflix, the cast and crew were supposed to start filming Outer Banks season 5 in May, but that start date has been pushed back to June 16. No reason for the delay has been revealed.

After Outer Banks season 4 dropped on Netflix in the fall of 2024, we heard quickly that season 5 was going to start filming in the spring of 2025. While we thought March or April were the likely start dates, it's clear that season 5's production start is getting a late spring start date. Outer Banks Tries Too Hard With Friends to Lovers, It’s More Cringe-Worthy Than Heartfelt
Image
Outer Banks leans hard into the friends-to-lovers trope and ends up face-planting. Instead of slow-burn charm, we get awkward stares, clunky moments, and zero real spark.

Frankly speaking, it’s less romantic tension and more secondhand embarrassment on loop. The very shift from friendship to romance feels rushed, forced, and way too scripted to land any real emotional punch.

Sure, the show nails the beach vibes and adventure chaos, but when it tries to get cute with love, it fumbles hard. The chemistry falls flat, the buildup lacks bite, and the whole thing feels more cringe than compelling.

Outer Banks star reveals Rudy Pankow kept a killer secret from him
Image
While Outer Banks fans are recovering from a double dose of bad news (JJ Maybank dying in the season 4 finale and the season 5 release pushed to 2026), one of the stars of Outer Banks season 4 opened up about how he learned about JJ's death in the finale.

As it turns out, Rudy Pankow, who starred as JJ Maybank in all four seasons of Outer Banks, kept the killer secret that his character would be dying in the season finale from J. Anthony Crane, who played Chandler Groff, JJ's real father, for as long possible. As you'll remember, Groff is JJ's father and killer!

In a new interview with The Direct, Crane revealed that he was shocked to learn his character would kill JJ, and Pankow had a legendary response. Here's what Crane told The Direct:

"I think he knew what was going to happen, but he didn't tell me. But I...

I'm Scared the 'Outer Banks' Writers Will Replace JJ with Rafe
Image
It’s been months since the second part of Outer Banks Season 4 was released on Netflix, but I can tell you that I’m still unwell. Who knows how long it’s going to take to get over this infuriating season and devastating season finale, but it certainly won’t be anytime soon. While re-watching the first three seasons of Netflix’s adventure teen-drama series, which found worldwide success, offers at least a slight hint of comfort, the developments regarding Outer Banks’s fifth and last season make my world crumble. Again.

Even though Outer Banks became one of the most successful series of the 2020s so far, the Netflix hit series has received tons of backlash ever since the fourth season was released. From controversies regarding tensions on set, shocking character deaths, painfully cringe interactions, and questionable character developments, Outer Banks is certainly in the thick of it. Unfortunately,...

Outer Banks Season 5: Everything We Know About The Final Season
Image
Netflix's teen drama series Outer Banks has been a consistent success throughout its four seasons, and it has been renewed for season 5. Created for TV by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke in 2020, the series concerns a group of friends (who call themselves Pogues), who search for lost treasure and duke it out with rival teen group, The Kooks, in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina. Mixing all the trappings of classic teen romance with swashbuckling adventure, Outer Banks delivers a unique viewing experience that has helped make it one of Netflix's most popular originals.

Season four opens with a lot of emotional baggage, as the Pogues must not only deal with their complicated family lives, but the burgeoning new adventure that was laid out before them. As the relationships in Outer Banks get more complicated with each successive season, so too does the intrigue. Perhaps the...

Outer Banks Season 5 Gets Uncertain, But Hopeful, Filming Update From John B Star 2 Months After Final Season Renewal
Image
Just a couple of months after it was confirmed in the works, Outer Banks star Chase Stokes has a vague update on season 5's development. Netflix's action-adventure drama show first premiered on the streaming platform in 2020, and is set in North Carolina's titular coastal region, where a group of friends search for legendary lost treasures. Created by Josh and Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, Outer Banks boasts an ensemble cast, and in 2024 it was confirmed that season 5 will be the final season of the show, but details have been few and far between so far.

In an interview with ScreenRant for his upcoming romantic drama Marked Men: Rule + Shaw, Stokes revealed that, although Outer Banks season 5 has been confirmed as the final season of the show, things are moving slowly with development, and Netflix has remained tight-lipped. He revealed that the writers are working hard to come up with...

Yeah, We're Totally Fine With JJ's Replacement in 'Outer Banks'
Image
Fans of Netflix's Outer Banks were dealt a major blow after showrunners killed off Og Pogue JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow). However, creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke trusted their writers to make the best decisions for the show's upcoming and final season. Although JJ Maybank worked to move the storyline forward for the existing four seasons, his character arc fell flat, leaving little room for the Pogues to grow as individuals or as a group. It was often the Pogue's altercations with the Kooks — namely, Rafe Cameron (Drew Starkey) — which made for countless twists and turns as the often confounding storyline unfurled for all the characters in Season 4.
