It’s French! It’s hot! Jacques Deray’s most unusual film is an intimate, minimalist murder story that digs deep into the affairs of four very superficial people. Among the wealthy set are four pleasure seekers with a laissez faire take on relationships, that think they’re above basic drives — jealousy, possessiveness, resentment. The movie also makes book on the fame & notoriety of the off-on show biz couple Romy Schneider and Alain Delon — the film’s opening seems to celebrate their bigger-than-life glamour and beauty. A notable extra is a 2019 documentary with Delon and his co-star Jane Birkin, plus the film’s famous writers.

They star together with Maurice Ronet and Jane Birkin in Jacques Deray’s 1969 thriller “La Piscine,” a volley of sexual jealousies and resentments between four people vacationing in the Côte d’Azur, which provides the perfect backdrop to simmering psychosexual tensions. One of the biggest box office successes in France of all time, “La Piscine” is getting a re-release from Rialto Pictures this summer, kicking off with a two-week exclusive run at Film Forum in New York beginning May 14. Then, the restoration will begin a national rollout.

There’s almost an embarrassment of riches on display in the new movie A Bigger Splash, at least in terms of the main cast members. Consider how excited most cinema buffs would be for anything that starred Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton, but then factor in how this is a change of pace for them both, along with A Bigger Splash being a high profile title on the fall festival circuit last year, and that only adds to the hype, as it were. Having seen the final product, I’m not too wild about it, but it is really hard to beat this cast. With the film headed to theaters this week, I figured it paid to discuss this one a bit. It’s certainly an indie movie of note, no doubt about that. The film is loosely inspired by La Piscine (or The Swimming Pool), but mostly is just its own thing.

Following a brief scene opposite each other in 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton are set to appear on the big screen together once again, this time in A Bigger Splash.

The film is directed by Italian director Luca Guadagnino, marking his first feature since 2009’s I Am Love. It is written by The Invasion and True Story scribe David Kajganich, and is an adaptation of Jacques Deray’s 1969 film La Piscine, and by extension the source novel written by Jean-Emmanuel Conil. Swinton and Fiennes star alongside Dakota Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts.

The film’s synopsis is as follows.

Dakota Johnson has been cast in A Bigger Splash.

The Fifty Shades of Grey star will appear alongside Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes in Luca Guadagnino's film, reports Variety.

The movie is a remake of Jacques Deray's 1969 sexual drama La Piscine.

Jane Birkin, Alain Delon and Romy Schneider starred in the original adaptation of Alain Page's novel, written under the pseudonym of Jean-Emmanuel Conil.

It centres around a holidaying couple who get caught in a love triangle with a younger woman.

Johnson's first Fifty Shades of Grey trailer debuted last week and has already become the most watched trailer of 2014.

A Bigger Splash will begin shooting next month in Italy.
