Briefly on the soap opera Sentieri (1952) in 1984 before her character fell into a pit of quicksand (she told Time magazine that her preferred death for her character was "to be impaled on a hat pin"). She returned to the soap opera in 2003, as a different character and in a role specifically designed for her.

Primarily a stage and Broadway actress, she has appeared in such classics as "Macbeth," "As You Like It," "Ghosts" and "The Importance of Being Earnest." She won a Tony nomination as Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Musical) for her 1965 performance in "Half a Sixpence."

2001- Rebuilding the Montauk, Long Island, home she shares with hubby Dick Cavett, which burned down several years ago.

Known for her flamboyant eccentrics and inimitable gravelly tones, she played Tallulah Bankhead in the 1980 mini-movie La guerra di Rossella O'Hara (1980).
