Arrow Video bumps yet another of its top special edition titles up to 4K Ultra HD, just for home theater enthusiasts after the best and brightest of big screen experiences. The movie looks better than ever, and although the unrated version still packs too much gore overkill for average viewers, we respect the Horror-Comic vibe it was meant to conjure. As sci-fi satire Robo still carries a big stick: Edward Neumeier’s anti-corporate, anti-privatization message comes through loud, clear, and profane.

Extra-special extras adorn this stunning reissue of a modern sci-fi action classic. Paul Verhoeven’s sledgehammer of graphic-novel brutality and wicked political satire (courtesy of a Michael Miner-Ed Neumeier screenplay that should have won awards) hasn’t diminished one iota. We still feel like we’re being subjected to a shockingly ultra-violent entertainment from the future. Both versions are present, along with enough interview extras to make one feel personally involved in the production. Although later entries in the Robo franchise were marketed to children (we have the toys to prove it) this hard-action show expresses an adult-oriented rage against Reagan’s America. The filmmakers could have earned a lot more money making Robo un-political and kid-safe but instead chose to stay true to their radical concept.

Sol Negrin, five-time Emmy-nominated cinematographer, best known for his work on Kojak (1974-77) and St. Elsewhere (1982), died on March 20, Icg confirmed today. He was 88. Sol Negrin, a cinematographer who received five Emmy nominations, three for his work on the classic Telly Savalas cop series Kojak, died March 20, the American Society of Cinematographers announced. He was 88.

Negrin's other credits as a director of photography include episodes of McCloud, The White Shadow, St. Elsewhere and Rhoda; the 1972 documentary The Concert for Bangladesh; and the 1974 feature Amazing Grace, starring Moms Mabley.

He contributed additional cinematography to films including King Kong (1976), Superman (1978), Jaws 2 (1978), RoboCop (1987) and Coming to America (1988).

Former president of the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) Richard Crudo has been voted to the post for the fourth time.

Crudo previously served in the capacity from 2003-05 and said he was honoured for another opportunity, adding: “As always, we will be aggressively promoting our art and craft, as well as the related interests of cinematographers everywhere.”

The Asc board of governors annual vote elected vice- presidents Owen Roizman, Kees Van Oostrum and Lowell Peterson, treasurer Victor J Kemper, secretary Fred Goodich, and sergeant-at-arms Isidore Mankofsky.

The members of the board, elected in May by the body’s active membership, are: Curtis Clark, Dean Cundey, George Spiro Dibie, Richard Edlund, Fred Elmes, Francis Kenny, Matthew Leonetti, Stephen Lighthill, Michael O’Shea, Rodney Taylor and Haskell Wexler. Alternate Board members consist of Kenneth Zunder, Steven Fierberg, Karl Walter Lindenlaub, and Sol Negrin.

Austrian Christian Berger won the American Society of Cinematographers' feature competition for "The White Ribbon" during the 24th Annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza on Saturday.

The other nominees in the feature film category -- which along with "The White Ribbon" are also up for Oscars in cinematography -- are Barry Ackroyd for "The Hurt Locker," Mauro Fiore for "Avatar" and Robert Richardson for "Inglourious Basterds." "Nine," photographed by Dion Beebe, rounded out the Asc feature nominees.

Commenting on the range of looks and approaches to this year's nominated films, Berger said backstage: "It was quite good to have that contrast ... to see what is photography today in cinema -- or what will be the future."
