VHS is all the rage among collectors here in 2025 – make sure to check your local Walmart for our brand new Terrifier 3 VHS release! – and the next horror movie to get a modern day VHS release is John Carpenter’s They Live, which of course originally hit VHS back in the day.

Indiewire reports that the UK company Vice Press Home Video is bringing 1988’s They Live back to VHS, the next release in a lineup from the company that recently brought films including Evil Dead II and Suspiria back to the not-quite-dead VHS format.

Two different editions will be released by Vice Press. The first, seen above, is the eye-catching “They Live, We Sleep” edition, based on the film’s hidden message imagery and spooled onto white VHS tapes. Indiewire notes in their report that five different white tapes will be sent out, featuring slogans including “Obey,” “Consume,” “Submit,” “Stay Asleep,...

The '80s was a fantastic decade for horror movies. There was a huge range of horrors as filmmakers made their mark by creating distinctive movies that shocked the world. The '80s produced some of horror's most scary villains, with Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees taking on the mantle of '70s horror icons like Halloween's Michael Myers.

The '80s was a great time for slashers but also sci-fi horrors and psychological movies like The Shining. The expansion of the genre was great as new viewers were invited to experience a range of new horror movies. It's because of this that the '80s is fondly remembered as a stand-out decade for horror as new generations of genre fans explore the movies that defined the '80s.

Mondo has some incredible 1/6 scale figures on display at San Diego Comic-Con this week, and our friends over at Toyark are inviting us to virtually visit the booth with their photo gallery.

The two upcoming horror figures on display at Mondo’s booth are the killer doll M3GAN from this year’s M3GAN, as well as John Nada from John Carpenter’s They Live.

Both figures pitch perfectly capture the characters, featuring incredible head sculpts, cloth outfits, and various accessories including Nada’s sunglasses and guns.

The M3GAN figure even comes with a “battle-damaged” alternate head.

Scream Factory just can't get enough of John Carpenter's politically charged sci-fi classic They Live and they're celebrating in a brand new way. For the first time in the U.S. & Canada, They Live is being released in a 2-Disc Uhd/Blu-ray format nationwide and will be available on our site and other retailers. Release date is Dec 8th. It will include all previous bonus features from the prior 2012 Collector's Edition release.

For the first time ever, a limited edition 8" inch Neca - N.E.C.A action figure of Keith David's "Frank" is a reality and only available exclusively from Scream Factory. "Frank" as portrayed by actor Keith David, It's a perfect complement to Neca's "John Nada"/Roddy Piper action figure (available elsewhere in Nov 2020), "Frank" comes with two accessory machine guns, and is dressed in a purple shirt, khaki pants, and special sunglasses to see right through the aliens' disguise.

One of Scream Factory's first Blu-ray releases was John Carpenter's They Live back in 2012. Flash forward eight years and the distributor will celebrate Carpenter's cult classic with even more fanfare on December 8th with a new 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray release that comes with a limited edition Neca figure of Keith David's character Frank Armitage, along with the previous bonus features from the 2012 release and They Live music on vinyl from Sacred Bones and recorded by John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies.

John Carpenter’s They Live is one of the most criminally underrated films of the ‘80s. In response to the unbridled capitalism that took over America under Ronald Reagan, Carpenter made a movie about a blue-collar guy who stumbles upon the shocking realization that aliens have dominated Earth. Neca's new They Live "Rowdy" Roddy Piper action figure is here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and it's all out of gum. With Toy Fair 2020 now under way, Neca is back at it with several new reveals of upcoming horror movie action figures for fans of the genre to get excited about. Following last year's They Live figures, which depicted the alien antagonists from the movie, Piper's John Nada is next in line from the cult classic John Carpenter flick to be given the glorious action figure treatment from the famous collectible company.

Though the figure isn't yet listed on Neca's official website, people in attendance at Toy Fair have been taking snapshots of the reveal. Four John Carpenter classics have been given 4K restorations and are heading back to theaters this fall in order to celebrate the new versions of these fan-favorite horror and sci-fi movies. In 1988, John Carpenter released one of his best films, a sci-fi action movie designed to comment on the sociopolitical landscape of the 1980s. Little did Carpenter know back then that the movie would only become more and more prescient over the next 30 years. Though released in 1988, They Live is a movie about right now.

I see a lot of people online complaining that they want their movies and their politics kept separate. I hope those people have never seen They Live. The two cannot be separated. The film, based on Ray Nelson’s 1963 short story “Eight O’Clock in the Morning,” is Carpenter’s shot across the bow: a howl of rage about the Lie of the American Dream disguised as a violent B-movie. To think that one can watch They Live—most movies, for that matter—divorced of any and all political context is to willfully ignore the message.
