He has played the same character (Officer Jim Reed) in four different series: Dragnet 1967 (1967), Adam-12 (1968), The D.A. (1971) and Squadra emergenza (1972).

Started working when he was 10 years old, in his father's gas station. He earned 50 cents an hour. He worked at an airport all through high school.

On October 14, 2000, he and Adam-12 co-star Martin Milner received the LAPD Historical Society's Jack Webb Award for their support of the LAPD.

Shared the same birthday with Julie London, who was 16 years McCord's senior. She worked with him on both series: Adam-12 (1968) and Squadra emergenza (1972).

While in college a friend invited him to play in a game of touch football. The captain of his team was Ricky Nelson. The captain of the opposing team was Elvis Presley. Not only did this lead to his playing a recurring character on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1952), but he would also be cast in a number of Elvis movies.
