Shel Talmy, Producer for the Who and the Kinks, Dead at 87
Image
Shel Talmy, the producer behind hits including the Kinks‘ “You Really Got Me” and the Who’s “My Generation,” died on Wednesday following complications from a stroke, a representative confirmed to Rolling Stone. He was 87.

Born in Chicago in 1937, Talmy first started working in the music industry in the late Fifties, moving out to London in 1962 to work at Decca Records. He started working with the Kinks in 1964, producing “You Really Got Me” that same year. He was a significant figure in the Who’s early career, signing the band to his production company.

Ha! Ha! Said the Clown, as ‘Terrifier 3’ Scares Off ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’
Image
Manfred Mann’s 1968 hit single “Ha! Ha! Said the Clown” synthesizes theaters this weekend as “Terrifier 3” (Iconic/Cineverse) easily took the top spot. “Has the king lost his crown?” the second verse goes. Well, yes he did, and more, as “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.) fell 81 percent and likely to fourth place.

“Terrifier” is the third entry in the microbudget unrated horror series. With a $5 million budget (including marketing), it more than doubled what was anticipated as an already-decent $8 million opening. Positioned perfectly before Halloween, ahead of “Smile 2” (Paramount) next week, it built on its growing fandom and a smart social media campaign.

With an audience that reportedly is almost half Latino, “Terrifier 3” saved a bad weekend from being even worse. It’s an impressive achievement, all the more so without an MPA rating, and it could reach $50 million.

The caveat is we’ve got $18.3 million...

Mick Fleetwood Remembers ‘Musical Father’ John Mayall
Image
Mick Fleetwood, once a member of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, paid tribute to the British blues legend who died Tuesday at the age of 90.

Although Fleetwood’s stint in the Bluesbreakers lasted less than a year, the drummer’s tenure in the band had a lasting impact on music history as he and two fellow members of Mayall’s group — bassist John McVie and guitarist Peter Green — would soon form their own group, Fleetwood Mac.

John Mayall Dies: British Music Icon Whose Bluesbreakers Featured Eric Clapton, Peter Green & Others Was 90
Image
John Mayall, the newly minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer whose group the Blues Breakers helped nurture many British music legends including Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor and several future members of Fleetwood Mac, died Monday in California. He was 90.

His family released a statement on social media confirming the news but gave few details other than citing “health issues.”

“It is with heavy hearts that we bear the news that John Mayall passed away peacefully in his California home yesterday, July 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family,” the Instagram post reads. “Health issues that forced John to end his epic touring career have finally led to peace for one of this world’s greatest road warriors.”

Heralded as “The Godfather of British Blues,” singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mayall had a love of American blues and jazz — and a gift for spotting young talent. In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, he...

How Robbie McIntosh Became a Go-To Guitarist for Paul McCartney, John Mayer, and Others
Image
In the summer of 1989, Paul McCartney hit the road for the first time as a solo artist. The Wings tours of the Seventies had featured only a smattering of Beatles songs, but this time around he was going to play nearly 20 a night. Pulling this off would require a guitarist who was capable of re-creating some very famous parts originally played by George Harrison and John Lennon. McCartney had his choice of big-name players for the job, but he went with Robbie McIntosh.

“That tour was the high point of my life,...

Shout! Studios Acquires Na Rights To ‘Revival69’ Documentary About Historic Music Event Where John Lennon “Shed The Mantle Of The Beatles”
Image
Exclusive: Shout! Studios has acquired North American rights to the music documentary Revival69: The Concert That Rocked the World, about a historic happening that’s been called “the second most important event in rock & roll history.”

Ron Chapman directed the film, which held its U.S. premiere this week at SXSW in Austin, Texas, playing in the festival’s 24 Beats Per Second section. The documentary tells “the remarkable, behind-the-scenes story of how a little known, but life-altering music festival came together — against all odds,” according to a description of the film. “Young, scrappy concert promoter John Brower puts his life on the line (literally) to turn his failing Toronto Rock n Roll Revival into a one-day event… The festival united rock legends like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, and Gene Vincent, with The Doors, who were the biggest band in the world. But it was the...

The Savage Innocents
The original Quinn the Eskimo (no kidding) is another life-loving rough portrait from Anthony Quinn, in Nicholas Ray’s rather successful final spin as a writer-director. Despite some technical awkwardness, Ray’s sensitivity to outsider souls finds full expression. Humans don’t get any more ‘outside’ than Inuk, a primitive unequipped to deal with the modern world.

Eurotica Season Planned For The Horror Channel
Source: FilmShaft - Eurotica Season Planned For The Horror Channel

The Horror Channel are plotting a wonderful season of flicks on the theme of 'Eurotica'. And what does that mean, pray tell? Well it can best be summed up as European horror films with an erotic bent. Think iconic exploitation filmmaker, the mighty Jess Franco.

They've got titles such as Eugenie: The Story of Her Journey Into Perversion, Venus in Furs (isn't that a Velvet Underground song?) and The Bloody Judge - that one stars none other than Sir Christopher Lee. Below is the full press release - so read it.

"Jesus Franco, now a physically frail Octogenarian living in Spain, is regarded as one of the world's best exploitation auteur directors and the Horror Channel is dedicating the month of June to showing four of the higher-budgeted Franco films made in 1969 and 1970, the period when British producer Harry Alan Towers...
