Goddard Lieberson(1911-1977)

(1949 through 1956) He was responsible in the late 1940s and early 1950s for the first ever LP recordings of such Broadway shows as "Girl Crazy", "Oh, Kay!", "Babes in Arms" , "Pal Joey", and the first 3-LP version of "Porgy and Bess". Although some of these recordings were done with their original orchestrations, many were not, partly because it was thought the orchestrations had been lost forever. The 1951 "Porgy and Bess" recording was the most complete version of the opera recorded up to that time, and the 1950 "Pal Joey" was so spectacularly successful that it led to the 1952 revival of the show. The most successful Broadway album produced during Lieberson's tenure was the original cast recording of "My Fair Lady", and it was during Lieberson's presidency of Columbia Records,that Leonard Bernstein's flop musical "Candide" was first recorded insuring that the show would gain a cult following.
