Trailer: Detective vs. Sleuths by Wai Ka-fai
Charlene Choi
Hong Kong is rocked by a series of brutal murders. The victims are suspects of cold cases who have eluded arrest for many years. The gang of killers, who call themselves “The Chosen Sleuths”, are vigilantes who are taking justice in their own hands and openly challenging the Hong Kong police. In response, the police form a task force of their own “chosen sleuths”, headed by a husband and wife team, to stop the criminals.

Lee Jun (Sean Lau Ching-wan) was a legend in the police force as an ace detective before the onset of his mental illness. Once nicknamed “The Chosen Sleuth”, Jun now lives as a hobo on the streets after he was disgracefully dismissed from the force. To prove that he is not a lunatic, but the real “Chosen Sleuth”, Jun joins the fight against the gang to stop their elaborately laid plans. Racing against time, Jun...

Film Review: Legend of the Wolf (1997) by Donnie Yen
Image
By 1997, Donnie Yen, who had already acted as action director in a number of productions including “Tiger Cage” and “Wing Chun”, felt comfortable enough to sit in the chair of the main director, much like Yuen Woo-ping had done years ago. And to ensure that “Legend of the Wolf is his film, he also starred, co-wrote, produced and was still the action director. The result, somewhat expectedly, was not exactly great.

Nevertheless, in the present, Ben, a young man, goes to meet the legendary and undefeated fighter nicknamed the Wolf, in order to ask him to do something from him. Wai, the Wolf’s right hand man and only friend, accompanies him. As he makes his request,...

Film Review: Lifeline (1997) by Johnnie To
Before founding his own production company Milkyway Image in 1996, Johnnie To directed a few movies for Shaw Brothers, among them a messy action comedy called “The Mad Monk” (1993). In 1997, To delivers “Lifeline”, a swansong to the Hong Kong studio system and a milestone for his independent career.

The fiery action adventure tells the story of a group of firemen in Hong Kong, their rescue missions and personal dilemmas. The fire station seems to be cursed because bad accidents occur on a daily basis. In the beginning, the new grimly chief Raymond Cheung (Alex Fong) gets in charge and gives everyone a hard time. Even the veteran firefighter Yau-Sui (Lau Ching-Wan) is not spared. He has to moderate between the firefighters and the new boss. Sunny (Ruby Wong) is the only woman in the station and is struggling with her husband, who does not accept her profession. Yau-Sui...
