Rupert Everett has been named among the competition jury members at this year’s Dinard Festival of British and Irish Film.
Everett will be joined by Rachida Brakni, Claire Chazal, Reda Kateb, Molly Dineen, Jennifer Saunders, and Ruby Wax.
Titles playing in competition include My Father’s Shadow by Akinola Davies, Mr Burton by Marc Evans, The Damned by Thordur Palsson, The Thing with Feathers by Dylan Southern, and Dragonfly by Paul Andrew Williams.
The festival’s opening film will be Kristin Scott Thomas’s My Mother’s Wedding. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham. The film follows three sisters who return to their childhood home for a momentous weekend: the third wedding of their twice-widowed mother, Diana Frost. The three daughters are from very different walks of life: Georgina is a hospice nurse; Victoria is a Hollywood star; and Katherine is a Captain in the Royal Navy.

I love when a project has a title that seems just a little off but offers a purposeful piece of wordplay.
It doesn’t have to be distractingly askew.
Take, for example, Everywhere Man: The Lives and Times of Peter Asher, the new documentary by Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine (Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song). It’s a title you could skim a dozen times without stopping and going, “Wait, isn’t the idiom ‘life and times’?”
It takes very little time into Geller and Goldfine’s slightly overstuffed and slightly imbalanced documentary to recognize what they’re doing.
Peter Asher is one of several figures who served as the Forrest Gump or Zelig or Chance the Gardener of the counterculture — people who pop up in the background of seemingly every photograph taken across several decades, whose names grace the liner notes of every significant album, whose accomplishments...

The premise of Glen A. Larson's 1978 sci-fi series "Battlestar Galactica" was high-concept and complex. It took place far from Earth, at the end of humanity's millennium-long war with a species of robots called the Cylons. The Cylons themselves were built by a long-extinct race of humanoid reptiles, and they seem poised to offer the same fate to humankind. Feeling that the writing was on the wall, a human named Count Baltar (John Colicos) betrayed humanity by siding with the Cylons, putting the robots hot on the trail of the Battlestar Galactica, a massive starship carrying most of the galaxy's last-known humans. Their goal is to find a long-lost "thirteenth tribe," a human colony that was said to have settled on a distant planet called Earth.
The assumption for viewers was that "Battlestar Galactica" was set in the distant future, but at the end of the 24th episode of its only season,...

"Who you want to be. How you want to say who you are." Transmission Films from Australia has posted the official UK trailer for the documentary film titled Twiggy, which is out in cinemas in the UK and soon Oz. This first premiered at the 2024 London Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Thessaloniki Doc Festival earlier this year. This is the tell-all doc about the real story of the greatest "It" girl – known as Twiggy – and all she's been through. She was initially born as Lesley Hornby in a working-class London home, but when she changed her name to "Twiggy" as a teenager, she became the world's first international supermodel almost overnight. Twiggy was the iconic face of 1960s Swingin' London – a period when fashion and music changed the whole world forever. With her androgynous look & giant eyes, she might as well have landed from another planet,...

Sadie Frost’s documentary Twiggy charts the remarkable life of Lesley Lawson, who rose from a Neasden teenager to the world’s first supermodel and then forged careers in film, television and Broadway. Frost traces Lesley “Twiggy” Hornby’s transformation through a tapestry of restored fashion shoots, candid interviews and rare home movies.
The film opens with the 1966 Daily Express cover that anointed Twiggy “The Face of ’66,” and moves swiftly through her meteoric rise in London’s mod scene, her New York triumphs and her unexpected pivot into acting. Archival gems—such as Melvin Sokolsky’s Warhol‑esque images of Twiggy amid masked admirers—and fresh reflections from Twiggy herself bring texture to each era.
Interview segments intercut with sequences of Twiggy interacting with industry legends, offering a sense of how those dizzying years felt behind the scenes. Frost balances quick‑cut montages of catwalks and pool parties with measured...

The actor-models have made a documentary about Twiggy’s life that is as lively and sunny as her personality – but it doesn’t shy away from exploring the misogyny they both endured
The woman in the jade-green suede biker jacket and tartan trousers sticks out her hand. “’Allo, I’m Twig,” she says. The name still sounds funny after all these years, even for those of us who can’t recall a time when we hadn’t heard it. This perpetually effulgent figure was styled “Sticks” by a friend on account of her skinny legs, only for that to morph into “Twiggy” by the time her picture was splashed across the Daily Express, which named her “the face of 1966” when she was 16. Yet it feels stranger still to think of her as Lesley Hornby, the name inked on to her birth certificate 75 years ago.

Batman movies have The Joker, the Scream franchise has Ghostface, and documentaries have… Woody Allen?
The disgraced comedian and filmmaker was the subject of the 2021 HBO docuseries Allen v Farrow, which re-examined the 1992 criminal investigation that was launched in response to allegations that Allen molested his daughter, Dylan Farrow. Now Allen has popped up in another doc, and, yet again, his role is that of an antagonist.
Hitting theaters in the U.K. this week is Twiggy, a new documentary from director Sadie Frost all about English model and “‘60s fashion icon” Twiggy, aka Dame Lesley Lawson.
Of course, the film covers Twiggy’s 1967 trip to New York City when she was just 17. She was accompanied by her manager/boyfriend who was 10 years older, and who, according to The Guardian, “became an oppressive and unfaithful controlling figure.” But clearly whoever put together this cheery newsreel footage at the time seemed...

Frost’s documentary follows the working-class Londoner taking bad luck in her stride as she progresses from fashion to film stardom and back again
This feelgood film directed by Sadie Frost is about the 60s fashion icon Twiggy; originally Lesley Hornby from Neasden in London, latterly Lesley Lawson after her marriage to actor Leigh Lawson, and then Dame Lesley Lawson with her Dbe in 2019. With comments from A-listers including Edward Enninful and Suzy Menkes, it tells us the story of a working-class heroine with an almost eerily beautiful gamine face who became a fashion legend with a pop-star status that eluded earlier figures such as Jean Shrimpton, though without the smouldering attitude of the supermodel generation that came later.
Twiggy made a glorious success of her life, and never conformed to any tragic narrative about how triumph in the ephemeral world of fashion and fame must surely be punished with disaster.

The Dublin Film Festival came to an end at the weekend after one of its most varied programs yet. Guests visiting the event included deep-dive documentary-maker Alexandre O. Philippe, attending with his Texas Chain Saw Massacre meditation Chain Reactions; director Jason Buxton, there with his acclaimed Ben Foster-starring thriller Sharp Corner, soon to be released by Vertical; Albert Serra, supporting his surprise San Sebastian winner Afternoons of Solitude; Palestinian director Elia Suleiman, honored by a curated retrospective; and British ’60s pop-culture icon Twiggy, subject of Sadie Frost’s film of the same name. As Cph:dox gears up for its 2025 edition, organizers have unveiled an audacious program of more than 200 films with a sharp focus on human rights under the theme “Right Here, Right Now.”
With 94 world premieres – 68 of them feature-length, the highest number in the festival’s history – Cph:dox continues to expand its global footprint.
For the third consecutive year, all main competition titles are world premieres. While this is not a formal selection criterion, artistic director Niklas Engstrøm tells Variety, “The fact that top directors chose to premiere their films with us speaks volumes about how the festival has grown.” He adds that shifting the festival from November to March in 2017 strengthened its global standing, positioning it as the go-to European launchpad for U.S. filmmakers after Sundance.

One thing that TLC fans know about Whitney Way Thore is that the My Big Fat Fabulous Life (Mbffl) star isn’t known for her decorum or subtle behavior. So, when she messed about with a ball, some critics claimed that she acted in a bratty way by giving the middle finger.
Losing Weight But Not Gaining Class?
For critics, the reality TV star could shed enough weight to look like Miss Twiggy, but she might not improve her personality. After all, she seems way too much of an exhibitionist for many viewers. Perhaps she remains so out there because of her midlife crisis when she turned 40.
Let’s not get it wrong, she does, indeed, have many fans who love her. However, some TLC viewers wish she would age gracefully. Then again, Whitney’s personality probably became the main drawcard and the network seems to love controversial cast members.

The classic Mary Jane shoe is easily identifiable: a low-cut, closed leather shoe with a strap over the top of the foot and fastened by a buckle, a button, or Velcro. It has a thin outsole or very low heel.
Also called bar or doll shoes, Mary Janes are usually associated with children’s school or formal footwear. However, they’ve also captivated adults, especially women, over the decades—so much so that they’ve even been enshrined in pop culture. Vice recently released The Shocking Truth About America's Next Top Model as part of their Dark Side of Reality TV series. In the documentary, previous contestants of Tyra Banks' controversial modeling contest opened up about their horrible experiences on the show. Having watched Antm as a child through my teens, I'd say Tyra may have been projecting her traumatic modeling experiences onto the contestants.
The supermodel—who was sued for alleged abusive conduct on America's Got Talent—has been open about facing many rejections in the industry, which she even pinned on a clueless Naomi Campbell in 2005. There have also been related statements from a former judge reportedly fired by Tyra, regarding her behavior on the show.
Here are the parallels between Tyra's career and the challenges she imposed on Antm contestants.

Peggy Moffitt, the iconic ’60s model who was also a contract player at Paramount and who appeared in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up, died at her Beverly Hills home on Saturday from complications of dementia. Her son, Christopher Claxton, confirmed the news to the New York Times. She was 86.
Moffitt’s wide-ranging influence can be traced to the persona she created, often in collaboration with others. Her gamine, modern look was a construct made up of her signature pale skin, harlequin eye makeup, five-point Vidal Sassoon haircut and a sense of humor, all of which she never abandoned.
She had a cultural moment when, in 1964, she posed in a topless swimsuit from designer Rudi Gernreich. The controversial look referenced a schoolboy’s shorts, with thin suspenders rising in a “V” between the cleavage, but nothing else above the waistline. Ask “Palm Royale” executive producer and star Laura Dern, who by casting Burnett in the glittering period comedy for Apple TV+ snagged a front row seat to watch one of Hollywood’s most legendary scene partners at play.

Many popular kids' cartoon shows address serious topics to introduce children to important issues they may encounter in the future. The key to addressing serious issues in these shows is presenting them in a way that young audiences can understand without being too shocked. These episodes have been praised for their handling of serious topics, even though some of them were shocking and sad, but they served their purpose in educating children.

Glenda Jackson, who segued from a successful actress — Oscars for “Women in Love” and “A Touch of Class” and two Emmys for “Elizabeth R” — into a 23-year career as member of the U.K.’s House of Commons, has died. She was 87.
Jackson died after a brief illness at her home in London, her agent Lionel Larner said. “Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winning actress and politician, died peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London this morning after a brief illness with her family at her side. She recently completed filming ‘The Great Escaper’ in which she co-starred with Michael Caine,” Larner said in a statement.
Aside from her prize-winning roles, Jackson gave terrific performances in such films as 1967’s “Marat/Sade” (as Charlotte Corday), “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and on TV in “The Patricia Neal Story,” a 1981 work about that actress’s stroke and recovery with husband Roald Dahl. A defining role in...

Led by Fran Drescher's Fran Fine, The Nanny cast is composed of veteran actors from both television and film. The classic '90s sitcom The Nanny aired for six seasons and over 140 episodes on CBS between 1993 and 1999. It was the show that made star Fran Drescher a household name. Co-created with her then-husband Peter Marc Jacobson, The Nanny was partly inspired by a trip Drescher took to London to visit her former Princesses co-star Twiggy. After spending a lot of time with the British model-actress' kids, Drescher got the idea for a show riffing on The Sound Of Music but with her as a nanny instead of some Julie Andrews type.
And so The Nanny was born, with Drescher starring as Fran – the loud-mouthed nanny to the three children of a stuffy British widower and Broadway producer living in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It was a role that...

Spanish-born fashion designer Paco Rabanne, who was best known for his metallic space-age outfits, has died in France at the age of 88 years old.
The self-taught designer broke into the Parisian Haute Couture scene in the early 1960s with a collection composed of 12 unwearable experimental metallic dresses.
His designs soon became favorites with stars and models of the time such as France’s Anouk Aimée, Françoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot and the U.K.’s Twiggy.
He soon connected with the cinema world, designing the iconic costumes for Jane Fonda in Roger Vadim’s 1968 cult film Barbarella, which are still on display in MoMA in New York.
Other cinema credits included Roberto Enrico’s The Last Adventure and Joël Le Moigné’s Les Ponyettes.
Rabanne also created individual pieces for Jean-Luc Godard’s 1967 drama Two Or Three Things I Know About Her…, Stanley Donen’s Two For The Road and John Huston’s Casino Royale.
Rabanne retired in 1999 but his mothballed label was revived by Spanish company Puig in 2011, which relaunched it as a fashion house and fragrance business that it now controls.
“The House of Paco Rabanne wishes to honour our visionary designer and founder who passed away today at the age of 88,” the company said in a statement posted on its website.
“Among the most seminal fashion figures of the 20th century, his legacy will remain a constant source of inspiration.”...

Throughout his film career, John Carpenter was always ahead of the curve; whether finalizing the blueprint for the modern slasher or offering an ever prescient political take on alien invasions, Carpenter always seemed to be ahead of what the next big thing would be, often to decreased box office receipts. So it came as a surprise to many (myself included) that he started up Body Bags (1993), a would-be anthology series ala Tales from the Crypt for Showtime. The bigger surprise though is that it didn’t fly, because this one off is terrific entertainment.
Originally televised on Showtime on August 8th, Body Bags was met with critical approval and fans of the genre enjoyed it. However, the brass had already decided that this would be a one and done, hence the truncated anthology film format for the three segments already filmed. What a shame, because while Carpenter in front of...

The CW just confirmed that "America's Next Top Model," arguably the most consistently entertaining reality series of the 21st century, is over. The Tyra Banks-hosted catwalk competition will end after its 22nd cycle airs. But we'll never forget the single best "Antm" moment. Forget Tyra screaming, "We were rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!" Forget the greatness of YaYa DaCosta and Eva Pigford. Forget the range of unforgettable judges, including Janice Dickinson and Twiggy. Just remember this. Remember that "Antm" physically knocked a model off a runway with a pendulum. And that the judges pretended to recoil in horror when that snafu is exaaaaactly why they staged it in the first place. Unforgettable TV. Thanks for the greatness, Tyra and crew. We know you'll make a loving, fantastic statement even though you're not here to make friends.

Unlike most of what Scream Factory puts out there, this would be my first exposure to The Doctors and the Devils. I had never even heard of the film, if I’m being entirely honest. One thing I like about the label is that every so often, they challenge my prejudices when it comes to the type of films I usually watch. I’ve always gone out of my way to avoid period movies, unless there is a really good reason to watch them. Depending on the subject matter, and the period that is being recreated, of course. Anything that takes place during the 1800s, that isn’t about Jack the Ripper, is going to have a hard time keeping my attention.

Directed by Freddie Francis, executive produced by Mel Brooks, and based on Dylan Thomas' original screenplay, this shocking horror-thriller stars Timothy Dalton as Thomas Rock, a brilliant young anatomy professor in 1820s Edinburgh. At first accepting only the cadavers provided him for study – those of a few hanged criminals per year – Rock eventually recruits two grave robbers (Jonathan Pryce and Stephen Rea) to secure a better supply of corpses.

With the return of America’s Next Top Model, we are revisiting our favorite moments, including all the winning photo shoots, from the first 20 cycles of the series. While we ranked the cycles according to Tyra Banks’ hair, we didn’t take into account of all the judges that have served on the show’s panel. Since they’ve helped Tyra decide who would become America’s next great fashion hope, it’s important to examine all 13 of them.
Note: The number one judge is and always will be Tyra herself so she was not included in this list.

Cycles 19-20
Representing the social media score, Bryan wasn’t so much of a judge as a judgey person at the panel who really had nothing to say.
12. Eric Nicholson, Senior Editor at Jane magazine
Cycle 2
Sure, he fought with Janice — how could you not,...

Robin Williams’ long filmography has more than its share of high-profile roles—but IMDb lists 102 total acting credits stretching all the way back to 1977. (That first one? A pair of parts in something called Can I Do It ‘Till I Need Glasses?, which the site describes as “a comedy are comprised of short sexually suggestive skits.”) Williams’ triumphs (Good Will Hunting) and failures (Popeye) are well-known, but it’s worth digging through some of his less-heralded work to find the occasional gem.
