In 2020 Koolhoven won the 'Jan Nijland Zilveren Roosje' given by the Dutch Film Distributors and the Dutch Association of Cinemas and Movie Theaters because "has been of great significance to the Dutch film world".

Koolhoven has have had a monthly program where he shows his favorite movies on the big screen since 2009. About the same time he started to be a guest on many Dutch television shows. This resulted in him having his own Television Show and Theatre Show in which he explains about the history and mechanics of cinema.

In 2022 Koolhoven won the Rutger Hauer Award, "being a very talented filmmaker and a huge supporter of talent development".

Was one of the "New Faces In European Cinema" as presented on the AFI festival (Hollywood) in 2004.
