Financially supported her bed-ridden mother while still at school, selling candy, assisting performers with their fan mail, working as a doctor's receptionist, nurse and as a theater usher. Was spotted by a Hollywood talent scout while dancing in a theatre.

Cheerful, athletic starlet of the 1930's and 40's, mostly seen in minor roles and bit parts. She grew up in Hollywood, the daughter of a retired actress. Gwen was signed by Paramount in 1937. From 1941, she appeared in second features and short subjects at Monogram, and Columbia, as well as for Hal Roach and Pine-Thomas.
