After an accident on a Cinecittà set, he died of a heart attack during his medical repatriation by plane from Rome to Paris. According to Jean-Pierre Léaud, Pierre Kast, an alcoholic, tore out his perfusion tubes.

As a member of the magazine Cahiers du cinéma in the 1950s, Kast created many short films and documentaries. He also served as a critic for the magazine.

Also a screenwriter and assistant director, notably to Jean Grémillon whose work he particularly admired, he was assistant to Jean Renoir in 1955 on the filming of French Cancan.

Prior to his work in film, Kast was a resistance activist in World War II, opposing the Vichy regime as a member of the Communist Students of Paris.

Pierre Kast was a French screenwriter, film and television director, and freedom fighter.
