In June 2011, Sam Jones III was sentenced to a year in federal prison and three years of probation for conspiracy to sell over 10,000 doses of the prescription narcotic oxycodone. He began serving his sentence in December 2011 and was released two months ahead of his sentence, in October 2012.

He attended the 2003 Comic-Con in San Diego, California with co-star Allison Mack, writers Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, and Jeph Loeb to promote the 3rd season of Smallville (2001).
