Daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith.

As a child, she acted with her mother Melanie Griffith and her half-sister Stella Banderas in Pazzi in Alabama (1999), but her family wouldn't let her act again until several years later, after she graduated from high school.

Landed the coveted role of Anastasia Steele in Cinquanta sfumature di grigio (2015), the film adaptation of the best-selling erotic novel, by reading a long, sexually-explicit monologue from the Ingmar Bergman film Persona (1966). It was an unconventional choice for an audition piece, but Johnson felt that the filmmakers were looking for a leading lady who would address the sexy material in a mature, direct manner. When she advanced to screen testing she re-enacted the first and last chapters of the book with co-star Jamie Dornan.

Like her grandmother Tippi Hedren, she is an animal rights activist; she saved 12 horses from being killed in 2014 by paying for them.

[on why she chose to be an actress] I felt so much when I was fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, I felt everything. I didn't understand [myself], I was so happy yet so angry and sad. That was the point when I realized that I needed to tell stories and make characters come alive and I needed to make people cry, and make people angry, and make people happy, and make them laugh.

When I did The Social Network (2010), David Fincher told me that I managed to make a thankless character pretty awesome. I thought that was really cool because I think he's really cool.

I've only been in long-term relationships. I've never really dated myself.
