Colin Farrell Is A Gambler On The Run In First Look At Edward Berger’s Ballad Of A Small Player
Image
In the last three years, Edward Berger has cemented his status as one of the finest filmmakers working today, earning rave reviews and no shortage of awards recognition with the extraordinary one-two punch of First World War epic All Quiet On The Western Front in 2022 and papal conspiracy thriller Conclave just last year. It's a hot streak that looks set to continue with Berger's next movie, Ballad Of A Small Player, a Netflix bound gambling thriller adapted from Lawrence Osborne's eponymous 2014 novel and starring a wondrously moustachioed Colin Farrell. Just take a look at the first pictures from the film below and see for yourself;

Compelling. Mysterious. Audacious. Almost hypnotic. Yes, Farrell's 'tache really is quite something, ain't it? But seriously, as first-look images go, these — with their eye-catching red-and-green colour scheme, crushed velvet, neon lights, and magnetising looks of both cool and consternation from Farrell — are really doing it for us.

Simon Pegg Film ‘Angels In The Asylum’ Owes Cast, Crew & Suppliers $5M After Halting Filming
Image
Exclusive: Angels in the Asylum, the British indie film starring Simon Pegg and Katherine Waterston, has left creditors out of pocket to the tune of £3.7M ($5M) after halting filming six months ago, according to a financial filing.

As revealed by Deadline earlier this year, Angels in the Asylum was mounted without its financing fully in place and had to shut down in February, 15 days into a month-long shoot. The picture is housed at special purpose vehicle Aita Films Limited, with first-time feature director Rob Sorrenti serving as producer alongside Heather Greenwood, who co-produced Gavin & Stacey: The Finale.

Aita Films Limited filed for administration in April, a process equivalent to Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Kallis Insolvency Practitioners, Aita Films’ administrator, has now produced a report outlining the company’s affairs and the amount owed to financiers, cast, crew, and suppliers.

Sorrenti and Greenwood have been approached for comment.

Pierce Brosnan Talks ‘MobLand’ Finale, James Bond and Who Sophie’s Real Dad Is in ‘Mamma Mia!’
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from the season one finale of MobLand]

Even in prison, Conrad Harrigan remains the kingpin.

Following the penultimate episode of MobLand when Maeve (Helen Mirren) and Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) were arrested for murder and heading back to prison, Conrad receives a warm welcome to end the first season of the Paramount+ crime thriller. The last scene in the finale, which released on Sunday, showed all the prisoners cheering for him, as he’s now earned the respect of criminals in the mob world.

In an interview about the season one finale, Brosnan told The Hollywood Reporter that scene was “a cinematic homage” to the 1968 film The Italian Job and filmed in the former prison Reading Gaol; he said being in the “powerful Victorian tomblike presence” where Oscar Wilde was imprisoned “was quite memorable.”

While his status professionally still holds up from prison, knives are cutting deeper in the Harrigan family. After Kevin Harrigan (Paddy Considine) found...

Finally, we’re getting somewhere with MobLand season 1! Episode 8 reeks of disorder and confusion, foreshadowing two major bombshells, and if you aren’t paying full attention, you just might miss them.

Maeve works to convince Kevin (Paddy Considine) that Seraphina is a threat. Harry learns that Eddie (Anson Boon) is sleeping with his daughter, and we uncover more about who Kat McAllister (Janet McTeer) is.

Meanwhile, Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) tries to assert his control when he asks Bella (Lara Pulver) to spy on Kevin and questions Jan (Joanne Froggatt) about Alice (Emily Barber). One To Watch: Antonia Desplat On Her Memorable Experience On ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Set: “It Never Gets Normal Because Wes Is A Genius”
Image
Over coffee in Soho, Antonia Desplat is describing her journey to Wes Anderson’s set for The Phoenician Scheme — the espionage drama that marks his fourth picture to compete for the Palme d’Or.

Desplat was working on French TV drama Made in France when the email arrived: “Wes wants to know if you want to come to Potsdam next week to play one of Benicio del Toro’s dead wives.”

One year before being beckoned to Germany by Anderson, Desplat had played the female lead in Johnny Depp’s Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, opening in June, which chronicles Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani’s rampage through pre-World War I Paris. Desplat plays Modigliani’s lover, the formidable writer and poet Beatrice Hastings.

In response to that email request, Desplat says, “I literally just jumped on a plane, went to Potsdam, then next to Berlin, and had...

MobLand season 1 episode 7 recap and review: 'The Crossroads'
Image
MobLand season 1 episode 7, "Crossroads," might be my favorite of the season thus far, as it finally brings us into the heart of this crime family war. Spoilers below.

While episode 6 kept us glued to the screen for its revelatory insight in the wake of Vron’s (Annie Cooper) death, this week’s episode brings some heated action that is heart-pounding, nerve-wracking, and full of absolute carnage. Brendan (Daniel Betts) only thought he saw carnage as he and Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon) were being kidnapped, but he has no idea what awaits him.

Episode 7 on Paramount+ has a lot going on, but our main focus is, of course, on Brendan and Seraphina, as well as Harry’s (Tom Hardy) efforts to find and save them, which also yields total f-ing carnage. Before we recap that, let’s set the stage.

MobLand season 1 episode 4 recap and review: A rat trap is set amidst shocking revelations
Image
This post contains spoilers from MobLand season 1 episode 4, “Rat Trap.”

The deeper we get into MobLand, the more I feel for Harry (Tom Hardy). He has the weight of the world on his shoulders and is the only thing preventing the fury between two powerful, ready-for-war crime families from unleashing, as both use him to their full advantage.

While episode 3 saw Harry working overtime to keep the warring waters smooth as police received an anonymous tip about where to find Archie’s (Alex Jennings) body, episode 4 sees him go from being a fixer to a suspected rat.

Additionally, Richie (Geoff Bell) makes a decision about Valjon (Peter Ferdinando), a new (suspicious) character claiming to be an old friend of Harry’s shows up, and we're inundated with a bounty of shocking revelations that expose both traumatic secrets and massive secrets, including the full truth behind Tommy’s (Felix Edwards) death.

"Maybe We Go International": 'MobLand's Tom Hardy Hints at Season 2 Plans
Image
After scoring one of the biggest series launches in Paramount+ history with MobLand, Tom Hardy isn’t just basking in the success, he’s already looking ahead to what's next. The Oscar-nominated actor, who stars as underworld fixer Harry in the gritty UK-set crime drama, is teasing the potential for MobLand to expand beyond British borders. It might sound ambitious, but MobLand has already proven it can pull in the numbers when it comes to eyeballs on the screen. The Guy Ritchie-directed premiere episodes — marking a 17-year reunion between Ritchie and Hardy since RocknRolla — drew 8.8 million global viewers in their first week, a record-breaker for the streamer.

In the show, Hardy’s Harry works as a fixer on a very precarious tightrope, cleaning up for the volatile Harrigan crime family, led by Pierce Brosnan’s Conrad Harrigan. But with betrayals mounting and police closing in, Hardy’s character is...

“Within Our Own Family”: ‘MobLand’ Star Tom Hardy Hints There’s a Rat in the Harrigan Clan
Image
Tom Hardy is no stranger to playing morally... questionable characters, but in MobLand, Paramount+’s newest breakout crime hit, his fixer Harry DaSouza might be in the deepest trouble yet — and someone close to the Harrigan family could be the one who sold them out. The Venom and Mad Max: Fury Road star reunited with Guy Ritchie (his RocknRolla director) for the first two episodes of MobLand, which instantly became the biggest premiere for a new Paramount+ original, racking up 8.8 million global viewers. The series joins 1923 and Landman as one of the streamer’s strongest launches.

In MobLand, Hardy plays Harry, a long-serving fixer for the powerful but volatile Harrigan clan, led by Pierce Brosnan’sConrad, cleaning up messes where he finds them. After Conrad kills his old friend Archie (Alex Jennings) under suspicion of betrayal, Harry is forced to clean up the mess — literally. He's even cleaning the curtains,...

Tom Hardy Deconstructs His ‘MobLand’ Fixer and Clears Up That Venom, Spider-Man Rumor
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from episode three of MobLand, “Plan B.”]

Tom Hardy has added another criminal role to his acting résumé. And this time, with MobLand, he’s unsure how his character can escape his plight. “Harry’s somewhat trapped inside being Harry,” he says of his starring fixer.

The Oscar-nominated actor reunited with his RocknRolla director Guy Ritchie, who directed the first two episodes of Paramount’s crime series. The premiere has become the biggest launch week for a Paramount+ new series (growing to 8.8 million global viewers, per the streamer), joining Taylor Sheridan’s hit series 1923 and Landman as record-holders for new releases.

The first two episodes of MobLand saw Hardy’s longtime fixer cleaning up after the powerful Harrigan family, quite literally as he cleaned up the body of Archie (Alex Jennings) after he was shot and killed by his friend, patriarch Conrad Harrigan (Pierce Brosnan), because he was suspected of betraying the family.

MobLand season 1 episode 3 recap and review: The back-up plan
Image
This post contains spoilers from MobLand season 1 episode 3, “Plan B.”

Now that Tommy (Felix Edwards) has been found, the real challenge begins for our fixer: preventing a bloody war. Harry (Tom Hardy) promised Richie (Geoff Bell) that he’d find his son, and he did… just not in one piece. Richie makes a brazen move in the opening of episode 3 and sends the Harrigans a message that he’s done waiting and is coming for them.

Additionally, Harry continues to juggle problems that need fixing, like his crumbling marriage, his housekeeper’s mother’s financial issues, and something secretive with Kevin’s (Paddy Considine) wife Bella (Lara Pulver), who has gone to great lengths to set her father up and record him bribing a foreign official, only to find herself the subject of extortion by a French spy.

What the purpose and endgame are here we do not yet know.

Criminal Minds: Evolution boss teases what brings Spencer back in season 18
Image
Wheels up in May, profilers! We're returning to the round table room in the FBI: Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) building to solve more twisted cases and tackle life head-on. Entertainment Weekly surprised Criminal Minds fans on April 10 by releasing multiple updates for season 18.

Criminal Minds: Evolution boss Erica Messer dropped some teasers we may not expect. We received a season teaser video, photos, and storyline updates from Voit to Spencer Reid. I'm not kidding when I say they surprised us. Criminal Minds rarely releases updates, besides an occasional Paget Brewster tweet slip. Other than that, fans don't know much until close to release.

Matthew Gray Gubler reprises his role as Spencer Reid

Along with Voit and the Bau team returning, Matthew Gray Gubler's anticipated return is finally happening. I'm a Spencer Reid fan, and I'll be glad to see him, but I can already feel my heart breaking for what he's possibly going to endure.

‘Angels In The Asylum’: Production Company Behind Simon Pegg Film Files For Administration
Image
Exclusive: The production company that houses Angels In The Asylum, the beleaguered British indie film starring Simon Pegg, has effectively filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Aita Films Limited intends to appoint law firm Debenhams Ottaway to oversee the administration process. The development follows Angels In The Asylum halting filming halfway through its shoot after running out of cash, as Deadline revealed last month.

In the UK, company directors can put a firm into administration if it can’t pay its debts. Deadline has previously reported that Angels In The Asylum’s 150 crew members are owed at least £600,000 in wages, while suppliers are also out of pocket significantly.

The administration process is similar to Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but unlike in the U.S., where directors remain in control of the business, Debenhams Ottaway will take charge of Aita Films’ operations and will attempt to restructure the company financially so that it can pay creditors.

How Two Film Programmers Centered Horror Fans Over Industry to Build the Overlook Film Festival
Image
Landon Zakheim and Michael Lerman, co-founders of the four-day genre-focused Overlook Film Festival, together represent the duality of horror fans — Lerman is fluent in the sequels of every slasher franchise, while Zakheim has a more self-proclaimed “pretentious” taste, preferring giallo and experimental fare. Together they’ve created a fan-focused festival that is quickly becoming the hottest ticket in New Orleans.

“We often talked about the difference between the business of film and the chaos of a festival versus the actual definition of the word ‘festival,’ the celebration aspect of it,” Zakheim says of the just-wrapped event, which ran from April 3-6. “At the time, genre and horror films were not in the boom we are seeing now, which is wonderful. Yet this corner of the festival circuit is filled with the kindest filmmakers, the most supportive fans, and people who want to help each other out, and we had all of these ideas.

‘MobLand’ Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: Did Conrad Kill Archie?
Image
The first episode of MobLand opens with Tom Hardy’s Harry Da Souza mediating some kind of dispute between two gangs, the Dogans and the Lazarous. It’s only after Harry is sure that the gang leaders, Costa and Mehmet, are ready to shake hands and bury the hatchet that he consults his boss, Conrad Harrigan (being played by the amazing Pierce Brosnan), regarding the next step. Now, Harry thinks that this agreement between the Dogans and the Lazarous isn’t going to last very long. Meanwhile, Conrad reveals that both Costa and Mehmet have been scamming him. Hence, apparently the best decision is to kill them all. While Harry and his associates get the job done, Conrad arrives to put the finishing touches and tells Harry to inform the Maltese that they’ll be filling the gap that’s been left by the death of the Dogans and the Lazarous.

‘MobLand’ Review: Tom Hardy and Pierce Brosnan Offer Mumbly Menace in Derivative Paramount+ Crime Thriller

You’d have to go all the way back to 2000’s Snatch for the last Guy Ritchie project that I awaited with unabashed anticipation.

At the time, Ritchie was coming off of the sleeper success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and he seemed like one of the freshest young voices in British cinema. Of course, Ritchie followed Snatch with Swept Away, setting off a prolific and unpredictable career of hits and misses (more the latter than the former).

I was astounded, though, by how much I enjoyed Ritchie’s 2024 Netflix series, The Gentleman. Despite my tepid feelings for the source material — Hugh Grant kept that film watchable — and generally tepid feelings for leading man Theo James, I thought The Gentleman was a blast, a well-calibrated mixture of wild supporting performances and high-octane action, held together by Kaya Scodelario’s extremely confident central turn.

The Gentlemen was so much...

Producers Of Simon Pegg Film ‘Angels In The Asylum’ Address Unpaid Crew: “We Sincerely Apologize For The Impact On Your Lives”
Image
Exclusive: Angels in the Asylum’s producers have sent a profuse apology to unpaid crew after Deadline revealed that the Simon Pegg indie film had to halt shooting amid funding issues.

In an email to colleagues on Friday morning, producers Rob Sorrenti and Heather Greenwood said they were “truly sorry that we find ourselves in this terrible situation.” They added: “It was never what we could possibly have imagined when we started this journey.”

Angels in the Asylum set out to tell an important story about women incarcerated against their wishes, but had to pause production indefinitely last month after running out of cash. Around 150 crew members are owed at least £600,000 in wages, suppliers have not been paid, and producers have also gone without a salary. A portion of cast pay was ringfenced in an escrow account under Equity union agreements.

The reasons for the financial strife are disputed. The...

Simon Pegg's 'Angels in the Asylum' Halts Filming After "Funding Crisis"
Image
Earlier this year, Mission Impossible star Simon Pegg began filming a British indie film that is a period piece about incarcerated women in an asylum. However, it seems the project, which made it halfway through production, is in jeopardy of no longer happening.

Deadline reports that production on Angels in the Asylum, which stars Pegg and Katherine Waterston, had to shut down due to a lack of funding. The report claims that the British indie film began filming without enough financing for the entire shoot, so it now has to halt filming about halfway through the project. In February, it was 15 days into a month-long production window, but now the cast and crew must wait until the producers find enough financing to restart principal photography. Deadline says there is no idea when cameras will begin rolling again on Angels in the Asylum as the $6.4 million production looks for new funding.

Simon Pegg Film ‘Angels In The Asylum’ Halts Shoot Indefinitely After Funding “Crisis” Leaves Crew, Producers & Suppliers Out Of Pocket
Image
Exclusive: Angels in the Asylum, a British indie film starring Simon Pegg and Katherine Waterston, has stopped shooting indefinitely after running out of cash midway through production, Deadline can reveal.

Angels in the Asylum was mounted without its financing fully in place and had to halt filming in February, 15 days into a month-long shoot. There is no clarity on when the £5M ($6.4M) production might restart as producers scramble to bring in new finance.

Angels in the Asylum set out to tell an important story about women incarcerated against their wishes, but has created a messy legacy in which crew members are said to be owed at least £600,000 in wages. A portion of cast pay was ringfenced in an escrow account under Equity union agreements.

Inspired by true events, Angels in the Asylum co-stars Minnie Driver, Lesley Nicol, Rose Williams, Aurora Perrineau, and Alex Jennings. Cush Jumbo and Miriam Margolyes were originally attached.

Steve McQueen Received Devastating Cancer Diagnosis on Eve of Shooting 'Blitz'
Image
Steve McQueen, the Oscar-winning director behind films such as 12 Years a Slave, Shame, and Widows, revealed that on the eve of shooting his latest film Blitz in 2022, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Deadline reports. The diagnosis delayed filming of Blitz for two weeks while McQueen underwent a procedure to remove the tumor. Fortunately, the filmmaker reports he is "fully recovered and fully functional."

McQueen kept the diagnosis and procedure a secret from his cast and crew at the time, as he didn't want to worry them or cause any distractions from the work at hand. "I really just wanted to get on with the job," he said. "And thats kind of like who I am. Im a get on with it kind of person."

The director's father, Philbert McQueen, sadly died from prostate cancer in 2006, prompting McQueen to become an advocate for early screening:

The cancers gone and thats down to early detection.

How Accurate Is Saoirse Ronan's Blitz to the Real-Life Event?
Image
Blitz starring Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson, and Elliot Hefferner, tells the heart-wrenching story of George (Hefferner), a young boy living in England during World War Two. George's mother, Rita (played by Ronan) tries to protect her son from the bombs raining down on London by sending him out of the city. Her defiant son treks back to his home while Rita desperately tries to find him.

Director Steve McQueen presents the horrors of the Blitzkrieg or "lightning war" undertaken by the German air force, the Luftwaffe, with an admirable amount of humanity and intensity. Like many movies about WWII, Blitz highlights the inescapable violence of the conflict, with specific emphasis on the bombing of London. While Blitz takes place over one day and represents the rhythm of daily life during WWII, it is a movie that focuses more on what is going on the ground than the actual aerial attacks.

Blitz Review: Steve McQueen's Harrowing Drama Suffers From Emotional Detachment
Image
This review was originally published as a part of our 2024 Middleburg Film Festival coverage.

Writer-director Steve McQueen has become adept at making movies of lost characters trying to find their way back to their families. He did it with 12 Years a Slave and hes doing it with his latest feature, Blitz. The historical drama is set in 1940, during Nazi Germanys blitz against Britain. At times harrowing and traumatic, McQueen never shows the moment the bombings happen. Still, there are close-ups of the weapons the Germans dropped on Londons civilian population that foreshadow exactly what will come next. Blitz is a capably made movie that, with a few exceptions, rings hollow.
