- Don Corey and Jed Sills operate Checkmate, Inc., a very high-priced detective agency in San Francisco. Helping them protect the lives of their clients is British criminologist (once an Oxford professor) Carl Hyatt.
- The son of a wealthy industrialist killed in a gun accident believes that it may have been murder.
- Carl Hyatt gets held up at a Monastery where he has an encounter with two hoodlums who threaten to kill a few of the priests that work at the Monastery he is held up at.

- A prisoner, played by Gary Merrill, is paroled after serving 20 years for a robbery and a gunshot victim. The son of the victim vows to make him pay once he comes back into the community. Others are also out to silence Merrill.
- Keenan Wynn plays a retired rich contractor, a rough diamond who craves social acceptance, but seems to create many enemies . Someone is out to kill him, with many suspects.
- A young man who has just won an art contest learns that his father has been arrested for embezzling from his company. Now Checkmate must find a good influence who can stop him from turning violent.
- Checkmate is hired by the director of a music conservatory that fronts for an Eastern Bloc freedom movement to protect his cello instructor who has been targeted for assassination.
- The Checkmate team has big trouble when Joe Farrell and his gang of hoods take them hostage at gunpoint. Farrell wants Don Corey to bring his estranged wife Jean and some stolen money he hid in her apartment to a boat where he intends skipping the country. If Don fails, both Jed and Dr. Hyatt, held hostage in their separate homes, will be killed. Farrell can't go for Jean himself, as rival gangsters are out after him; to complicate things even more, Farrell has a traitor in his gang trying to intercept Don and Jean who are desperately trying to bring the money to the appointed meeting in time to save Jed and Dr. Hyatt.
- Cyd Charisse plays a Prima ballerina, who is threatened by a lover. Checkmate get a retired cop to keep an eye on her, but he ends up dead, and later her lover is also murdered.
- Famous defense attorney John Baker arranges for his own assassination after receiving notice that he is about to be investigated by the bar association, but then changes his mind.
- When wealthy widow Beatrice Martin Kipp hires Checkmate, Jed and Dr. Hyatt must travel with her to her ranch to discover who is trying to kill her.
- Eve Arden, plays a fashion designer, worried that someone is out to destroy her and her business. Checkmate have two main suspects.
- Checkmate has more than one mystery to solve when they are hired by an unknown client to protect an unknown victim from an unknown killer at Felicia Royden's remote estate. Jed and Dr. Hyatt, posing as servants for the family, are puzzled by Mrs. Royden's strange little girl, Carol, who apparently makes up wild stories for no reason, but they soon begin to think Carol may hold the key to the mystery.
- Checkmate is called in by a convention manager when one of her guest speakers vanishes and it appears he may have been a victim of blackmail.
- A well respected archaeologist is about to murder a mysterious man, supposedly dead for many years. The doctor's fiancée hires the Checkmate team to stop the murder.
- Julie London plays a magazine editor, who is dealing with her hot headed husband just released from prison, and her publisher and partner, (Simon Oakland).When Oakland receives a threatening letter, London's husband is the main suspect.
- Jed goes undercover at a hobo camp to prevent the leader from being murdered.
- A Washed up Hollywood Movie Stuntman's life is being threatened by someone working on a movie he is in, Don from Checkmate steps in to try to figure out who is the one responsible for the threats & he also tries to stop him from actually murdering the stuntman who's life is hanging in the balance.
- When a judge and friend of Dr. Hyatt receives telephone calls and letters threatening his life if a man he sent to death row is e executed, Checkmate investigates the guilty man and the judge's character.
- A university-affiliated psychiatrist hires Checkmate to prevent his wife from killing a man who is allegedly blackmailing her.
- A desperate criminal, intending to flee the country, kidnaps a newly-wed bridegroom and takes his place, but not before the bride calls in Checkmate for help.
- A migrant worker is accused of killing an agricultural businessman. The hard nosed District Attorney, played by Henry Jones is sure of his guilt. The checkmate team, called in to investigate, are not so convinced.
- After two attempts on his life, big game hunter Lee Tabor brings Dr. Hyatt and Carl to his home in the Malayan jungle. He asks for their help in finding out which of his three house guests is trying to kill him.
- Sid Caesar, plays a emotionally disturbed disc jockey who had made a few enemies in his career. He is convinced someone is out to kill him and hasn't left the studio for two weeks. Checkmate are called in to investigate.
