Martje draws closer to the widower Bongaerts. Johannes Den Hertog spends more time with his secretary Tineke than his pregnant wife Miete. The entire village prepares for a visit by the Monsigneur.

Chaplain Odekerke reluctantly takes on the part of Zwarte Piet during the Sinterklaas celebration and is scolded for it by Father Lumens. After Miete's first child is born she questions Johannus about the measure of their love.
