I've now watched five seasons of 'Outlander' and at this point I have to honestly say: I'm giving up. After the review before the start of the sixth season, I painfully realised that I had long since lost the thread. The agonisingly long waiting times between seasons in my country do the rest to make any connection impossible. This series is clearly a case for binge-watching, if it ever comes to an actual end.
Because honestly, what else is actually happening here that's exciting? Every season, Jamie and Claire try to save the world (or at least Jamie himself) while basking in a moral superiority that often seems questionable given their own actions. And the ironclad rule of not changing history? Well, since Claire and Brianna have finally stayed in the past, it's been wilfully ignored.
It has to be said so clearly: 'Outlander' should have taken the plunge when the theme of time travel came to an end. What we see now feels like an endless stopgap until the grand finale. Until that day comes, I'll make do with YouTube summaries - my time has simply become too precious for that.
I'm sorry, because the dedication and passion of everyone involved in this production is remarkable. The individual episodes, the detailed set design - everything still looks coherent and of the highest standard, even after such a long time! Nevertheless, at some point you have to recognise when it is time to close a chapter. I am convinced that it would also be good for the careers of the main actors to devote themselves to new projects instead of remaining trapped in this time loop. 'Outlander' has passed its zenith.
