I always wonder what's wrong with people when they reject a genuine movie like Pandorum. It's quite disheartening when we realize that those people who made trash movies like Jaws, a box office success, also made excellent movies like Pandorum, a flop. Because, the plot is original, to the best of my knowledge; the acting is okay and the special effects are good. This movie is not like Aliens; not like Event Horizon; but different in all aspects. This is not a disaster movie. So the climax is satisfactory. Yet, it's a huge flop which made the production company, bankrupt in the next year. I really felt sad for the producers, who faced the outcome of box office collection. My verdict is that those who love space sci-fi horror, should not miss this movie.
Kudos to the director, for making such a great sci-fi. His intelligence reflects from the fact that even though it's supposed to be a remake, he has developed the plot independently, only with the core idea of the original film. Since sci-fi movies are very rare in Tamil, it is very enjoyable to watch such a clever sci-fi movie. I watched this only reluctantly, as I had already watched Coherence, the original movie. To my surprise, this remake movie is far more superior than the original movie, which is a rare phenomenon. The original movie offered no solid explanation, whereas this movie offered certain explanation for what was happening in the movie, which is definitely acceptable. The only drawback I felt was, the minimal cast in the remake movie. If there were more characters in the movie, as in the original, it would have been more fun. Otherwise, the movie is completely enjoyable.
I'm not surprised about the negative reviews and low ratings for this movie. This is a typical Shankar movie, with a strong message and certain unnecessary scenes. If you don't like Shankar, you won't like this movie. Previous Shankar movies, except Boys, were generally reviewed positively. There is not much difference between Indian and Indian 2. Indian also had all the Shankar elements, both positive and negative. Then why this outcry about Indian 2. It's because of Kamal Haasan. When Indian was released, Kamal was only an actor, whereas he is a politician, at the time of release of Indian 2. Further, in this movie, the present ruling party was not touched except in one scene. So automatically, the movie has been reviewed in a bad manner, by rival party supporters. For example, Shankar has been branded as anti-transexual in one review and termed as anti-slum dwellers in another review, regarding this movie. So forget about the negative reviews with ulterior motives. View this movie as a fantasy flick. Then only you can enjoy the movie, wholeheartedly. Because, the problems portrayed in this movie, are real, that too based on real life incidents. But the solution offered in this movie, is never going to happen in a country, like India. So in a fantasy movie, you need not worry about logic or possibility. No one likes the protagonist in an action movie to die or get caught. So we will be happy when the protagonist escapes in climax, as we accept the motive and actions of the protagonist, without minding whether it is logical or possible. I love this movie as it is very much enjoyable, without critically analysing the movie. You will dislike this movie if you support corruption or expect the movie to be as perfect as Maharaja or dislike Kamal / Shankar. Otherwise you will definitely enjoy the movie, subject to fast-forwarding songs.
