I wasn't planning to watch this. Then I kept seeing people online complain endlessly about the casting. Same tired arguments over and over. That's usually a sign something good is happening.

So I gave it a shot. Watched both seasons over two weekends. Ended up completely hooked.

This show is incredible. Not just for fans of the game, not just for fans of the genre. It's just solid storytelling. The acting is some of the best I've seen on TV in a long time. Pedro Pascal delivers every moment with weight and precision. Bella Ramsey proves every critic wrong. She brings intensity, depth and vulnerability without ever overplaying it.

The infected are terrifying. Not because of cheap jump scares, but because the idea actually makes sense. It's based on a real fungus. That small detail makes the whole world feel more grounded and possible.

What really works here is the emotional weight. This isn't just a survival story. It's about grief, guilt, connection and how people break or hold on when the world collapses. Every episode makes you care. When someone dies, it matters. When things go wrong, you feel it.

The worldbuilding is excellent. You see different ways people rebuild or fall apart. Some create communities. Others create dictatorships. It all feels believable.

It also looks amazing. Every episode is on the level of a feature film. Nothing feels rushed or cheap. HBO clearly trusted the creators and gave them space to do it right.

There's one episode in season two that still sticks with me. Brutal, beautiful, unforgettable. The show never panders or explains too much. It respects the audience.

The only real downside is the wait between seasons. It deserves more episodes, and sooner. But if this is the result, I'll take quality over quantity.

I've always considered myself a fan of Paul W. S. Anderson. As a teenager, watching Scorpion fight Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat, with Fear Factory blasting in the background, was one of the most exciting moments I've ever had in a cinema. Event Horizon is still one of the rare space horror films that doesn't just try to copy Alien and actually manages to be genuinely good. I've also got a soft spot for the early Resident Evil movies. They're fun, fast-paced, and Milla really does kick some Umbrella zombie ass. Even Monster Hunter had its charm. Not amazing, but a fun time.

But this... this was tough.

In the Lost Lands feels like a huge missed opportunity. It looks good, I'll give it that. The visual style reminded me of a mix between Mad Max and Sin City. Super stylized, very graphic-novel feel, with lots of visual attitude. But the story underneath? Barely there. Just a generic framework that tries to be mystical in parts but never really makes sense or gives you anything to care about.

If they had kept it a bit more grounded, just enough to make you connect with the world or the characters, I think it could've worked a lot better. The fight scenes are alright. They're fun. But the story drags it all down. It's hard to feel invested when you don't really understand what anyone wants or why you should care.

Paul W. S. Anderson used to be great at taking B-movie ideas and making them punch above their weight. I respect that. He's done it before. But this one just didn't land for me. There are pieces here that had real potential, but the final result feels like a stylish sketch that never got finished.
