This is one of those films that requires you to believe that the lead male and lead female characters are sexy and charismatic enough to get away with anything. Both Bret and Lauren pull that off in spades. They both look gorgeous in every scene they are in. Bret sounds and looks great as the guitar strumming singer. Somehow, whatever either of them do, you never stop rooting for them. You want them to win, to find true love, to succeed, just because they are so compellingly sexy. Very few films allow their most attractive actors to play their most depraved characters, but this one does. I think it is overall a great and unique ride. And, James Duvall playing a very thicc rando victim in the desert is a great bonus. Highly recommended.
Four quite good actors. A unique surreal family/Christmas situation. A strange and strained mother/daughter relationship. A weird porcupine obsession. It's not that easy to make a completely surreal horror movie. I could have lived without the semi-explanation of what had really happened at the end. But, still, the weirdness has a reality to it that makes it much more effective that your average Z grade body/mind horror. I both liked and loathed all the characters. I was intrigued by the mysteries, both eventually answered and unanswered, I also thought the setting, both physical and psychological was unique enough, to make the watch worthwhile. It's not Eraserhead, but if you enjoy that vein of horror, give it a watch. Again, the actors are rather excellent and completely believable.
A lot of talented and some hot actors. A great historical setting. A fair amount of money, and the result is, well garbage. I didn't see it in 3D and wish I had because some of the cinematography looks not bad. But the story is worse than bad cliché. All Roman men are bad. Roman women secretly wish for the hot, but kind (to horses) gladiator slave, rather than the extremely rich and powerful roman man their father has picked for them. Some of the gladiators are beyond noble saintly creatures, but a few are back-stabbing barbarians, and then something explodes...and every story line goes nowhere by BOOM. Every line and every scene is completely cliché or unbelievably terrible. Kit Harrington looks hot, especially when being whipped. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje tries very hard to portray his comic book character as a human being. But, Keifer Sutherland and the other "names" barely phone it in. They are all mostly villains, with no depth or redeeming features. Somehow, even a GREAT artist, like Jared Harris, is clearly board and irritated by the inanity of the whole endeavor before the first scene is shot. The film however shows off Maxime Savaria at his finest.
