This series is NOT about space travel and exploration so if that's what got you interested you might want to try some other show. It is about beautiful cinematography, some very accomplished acting and promoting current consumer tech. Story could be safely ignored since there isn't any story worth mentioning, it is mostly patchwork of memories, artistic moments, and shiny glittering screens of various sizes. Perfect for demo in TV store, not so perfect for watching.

I'm big fan of Gaiman's art so I had a high expectations for American Gods (although I didn't read a book). Unfortunately show is very disappointing with only bright spot being Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday. Pace is a major problem: it is uneven, senseless, and jerky which makes even interesting plots and scenes dull so there is no tension most of the time. Although there are some nice special effects it's very clear that there is not enough budget in that department. That often leads to cheap (sometimes ridiculous) solutions making final impression of odd pieces of different quality that don't fit together to form meaningful composition. Saturated colors cinematography, exaggerated blood and gore scenes and forced, meaningless dialogues are frequent and quite annoying. On the flip side, most of the cast is good to superb and opening sequence is just brilliant. Since story is quite interesting this should have been much better.

There are couple of possible aspects of this movie (family drama, alienation, love story) but unfortunately neither of them work very well. Main story is about young and successful manager coping with disappearance of his wife. Main character is distant and alienated from both the world and people in his life but also, unfortunately from viewers. Throughout movie I was unable to relate to his story or feel anything at all. Other characters and their stories are cliché at best or completely unbelievable, at worst. It is a very slow move but one that really goes nowhere, with no plot worth mentioning and no characters worth caring for.
