Zodiac is one of my favorite films of all time, and this doc adds a new compelling layer to it; a companion piece, sort of. Interviews include the real Robert Graysmith and footage of Arthur Leigh Allen and the people he hurt. It confirms how much attention to detail was put into the movie, and how important it was to some people who interacted with the main suspect. There is a lot of information I wasn't aware of and unlike most unsolved serial killer documentaries where they almost leave you wondering what the point of what you watched was, this one provides some semblance of closure. It's absolutely compelling and worth a watch.
An assassin is double-crossed by his employer and must exact revenge. It's a story so overused, so trite, that it is an absolutely devastating realization that director Fincher and writer AKW do nothing at all to subvert the norm. And I mean it adheres so strictly to this paint-by-numbers formula that it's baffling why such masters of their craft chose to do this at all. It has no B story, no supporting characters. Reznor and Ross's score sounds like they made it in a weekend, with most of the music being songs by The Smiths. Nothing justifies why this was a story that needed to be told again. Everything about this feels like Fincher is biding his time or trying to satisfy contract. I cannot recommend this.
The show absolutely could've been the next big thing - it was different, it had an identity, the cast was great, and it was fun - but you could tell the further it went, they were writing it a certain way to keep its budget down. The biggest issue is that it's on SyFy, and it needs a Netflix budget. If it had the right backing, it would've needed a second season to catch on, but it absolutely would've caught on.
