I found the fusion of genres totally successful, much smoother than I expected.

For vampire fans there's plenty blood but not gratuitous splatter.

The striking visual beauty is fully integrated with the sensibility of the film, it enhances and respects the historical and cultural milieu and is lovingly, generously, even gratefully rendered.

Some will interpret this as a chore or assignment, but it's not: this is an important film - important for people unfamiliar with this cultural lineage to know it exists.

This film should not be missed, there is much to enjoy and much to think about: it's entirely engaging.

The casting is superb, the performances are top notch by actors I was familiar with and those who were new to me.
