Dune Prophecy did to Frank Herbert's universe what Twilight did to Bram Stoker's. It's an insipid fanfic of a fanfic (Brian Herbert's). An exercise in matriarchal masturbation with nothing deep to convey.
The show's creators had a vast opulent universe to drink from, with aeons of intergalactic history, filled with intense political turmoil and exceptional characters, but it spends most of its time focusing on inter-personal vapid cliché drama - to a point where it feels more like you're watching a teenage movie. It doesn't help that it's filled with bad acting across the board. The dialogues are already weak and bland on paper, but are delivered with such terrible lack of gravitas it just robs any semblance of tension from the few scenes that actually offer any build-up. Embarrassingly superficial writing, bordering the infantile.
But the shallowness doesn't end there. It goes on to ship characters left and right for the sake of offering some gratuitous sex scenes between people you've barely been introduced to, just to cater, i suspect, to a Game of Thrones fantasy audience. But here's the thing, GoT had actually interesting meaningful sex, charged with taboos and social repercussions. And fans weren't watching it just because it was raunchy, but because it wasn't prude and simplistic about it, or anything else for that matter. And, more importantly yet, because it had brilliant captivating writing, extremely complex intrigue and powerful tension. There's nothing in this show that comes close.
The world-building is decent, but at this point i don't care anymore how good the cinematography, the vfx, or the art design are, just please release something with good dialogues and plot. Is that too much to ask? I'm so tired of watching millions of dollars being thrown into magnificent productions built on rubbish scripts. Such an obscene waste. Nothing can convince me there's no good writers out there - this is a systemic problem, not a crisis in talent. It's like narratives don't matter anymore, as long as you can throw enough eye-candy at people they'll keep on watching your trash.
