We didn't get to see this film in the theatre, bought it on DVD because we like Robin Williams.
This movie could have also been subtitled "and how to do the right thing".
The set up for the entire RV trip is caused by an event where a friend of the daughter wrecks havoc at a company party and doesn't care what the impact of her actions are. So instead of taking that once in a lifetime Hawaii trip, the family is dragged along on a trip via a fake reason to Colorado to fix things up that were caused at the party.
What I like about this movie is that it teaches a lot of things without beating you over the head about it morally. Slowly but surely the family dynamics change in a good way and they all learn that family is important and so are good people you meet along the way. This is yet another film from Hollywood where they have to advertise it as one thing but it's really good as other things like family dynamics and doing the right thing.
I could watch this master class a 1000 times and not be tired of it. The Route 66 song in the credits is fantastic as well.

If you have not seen this film in an IMAX theater, I would understand not giving this film anything less than a 10. The scene where the locomotive pulls up in town in IMAX is literally jaw dropping and you actually feel the ground shake - that alone is worth the price of admission.
I am praying that for the 20th anniversary they bring it back to the vast majority if not ALL of them for at least a week during the Christmas season.
I took my kids to see this at our local IMAX 20 years ago and was blown away by the story and the IMAX version of it. We watch it every year at home, but it's not the same thing as that one magical day 20 years ago.
10/10 and it's not even close.

I am a big Judge Reinhold fan, didn't know about this until I did a lookup on his early career for something else.
A person named colleencouch10 had said she couldn't find this in 2013, if she has watches set for her reviews she will find out that this is now watchable as a rental on Amazon Prime and if one looks in Amazon they might be able to get a DVD of it.
Looks good enough as a premise to watch it, normally I'm not into slasher movies or takeoffs of such like Scream, but since I like his work ( see Stripes or Fast Times at Ridgemont High if you really want some great early work of his, Stripes has a recently new directors cut that adds 17 mins but it explains a hell of a lot.
