Read the reviews before deciding to watch this movie, found them intriguing with statements like "this is not a Horror, Slasher type Movie", which is great as I prefer horror movies that don't involve horror based around mental disorders/psychopaths etc. This movie is extremely slow, as much as you understand most of what the premise the movie is based on, it does not get intriguing until half way through, then the pace picks up until we reach the end and what a letdown, what an end, there is no end, no answers, no reason, not even a cliff hanger, nothing. I wont be watching it again and advise other viewers that there are much more enticing, watchable movies out there.
Bad writing is the only excuse I can make for how slow, boring, no plot/story-line whatsoever. here we have a stellar cast of John Hurt, Charlotte Rampling, Kiefer Sutherland and a great performance by Charlotte Gainsbourg, in fact those and others all had great stage presence however tho film had NO story to follow, no love affair or any plot what so ever. I am a bit dumbfounded as what to write as with the cast and the filming, specially Kirsten Dunst in the moonlight near a Brooke is an amazing still in it self, even the location looks great. It is just slow with no meaning and not even any character including the lead, Kirsten Dunst, to follow. Just a loss. I find this a lot with films of late with John Hurt in the mi\x, it seems like he takes any offer. I have liked his work in many things since "Partners" in the early 70's but the most recent movies he has chosen to be n have left me wanting from his stellar performances for many years. As said it has a great cast, this alone is no reason to mark it up, great performances with what little they had to work with, but no recommendation to watch from me. I am sill trying wot work out what the film is about excluding the name "melancholia" which is supposed the plot.
Now this is a movie that makes me proud to be an Aussie. I can not fault any actor in this movie from the main characters to support characters, even location shoots and cinematography. It is s a superb script, well written and directed however even with a great story and director if the cast were mediocre, so would the movie be however the actors in this gave 100%, one would wonder how they can score higher in their art. Special mentions to the two main characters, Miles Szanto and Daniel Webber, again I mention just two however all cast deserve a big 10 stars for their part as the whole movie rolls on with no pregnant pauses because of the support cast. Also the location people deserve a 10 as well. No this does not have wild and spectacular CGI but it needs none of it. It is a raw and gritty movie of the turbulence of Milos and his best friend Dan who is pulled into a world spiraling out of control and with little skill or worldly knowledge to deal with his best mate's issue. It is sad, happy and just a fantastic movie made so also because Aussie film makers find it hard to get funding and for a movie with Gay tendencies, even harder. I think I have given one 10 and that was because it deserved a higher ranking which I stated so in my write up, this deserves better than a 10. Congratulations to everyone involved.
