Finally! The first episode of this beautifully filmed series certainly did not disappoint! Kathy Bates is such a powerhouse. Completely believable as the Matlock character. A courtroom drama like the good old days, but with a sharp, modern edge and wit. Every supporting character was on point. Not one dud in the whole cast. The timing was perfection, the dialogue witty. Lighting, makeup, costumes, sets, and score all drew me into the mystery in a subtle way. The twists and turns kept me guessing, and the ending was a masterpiece. I can't wait for the next episode. It's been a long times since I have been this excited and engaged in a show after just one viewing.
I actually like both of these actors and hope to see them in future films, but this was one of the worst romance movies I've ever seen. I saw it under another title-"Mystery by the Book". Thinking it would be in the vein of a Hallmark channel mystery, I selected it for viewing. Such a disappointment. The plot felt like it had been written by a high school student for a senior final project. It was painful watching the actors try to flesh out and carry the flimsy scenes along. There was actual frolicking, followed by the obligatory (though astonishingly nonsensical) falling down on the ground next to each other and giggling. After groaning through all the cheesy and contrived romantic cliches, the final scenes reached new heights of cringe, followed by an extremely lackluster and hasty ending.
