The show leans into a fantasy that feels like an outdated power trip. The protagonist, a feeble man with no real obligations, strides through a world where he inexplicably intimidates cartel members, casually rekindles intimacy with his ex-wife, and postures as a moral authority all while his daughter is obsessively driven to please him when she's not dating the bestest of QBs the state's got to offer.
Instead of delivering substance, the show relies on tired tropes, leaving little for viewers to connect with beyond surface-level theatrics. It's a frustrating exercise in style over substance that wastes its potential.
The whole thing feels hollow, with way too many storylines that never connect or make you care. Honestly, it feels like the script was written by someone completely out of touch with how real people interact. Plenty of these moments feel like posturing and more concerned with looking cool than actually telling a believable story. The relationships are awkward and forced, and don't even get me started on how unbelievable some of them are to begin with. The kids adds absolutely nothing to the story either and just comes off as a nuisance you just wanna skip over.
The show's heavy reliance on close-up sensual and erotic scenes feels excessive and misplaced. Rather than enhancing the narrative or adding depth to the characters, these moments often come across as gratuitous and detract from the overall storytelling. It seems as though the creators are relying on shock value to maintain viewer interest.
I've never been a fan of Billy Bob Thornton, and this series does little to change my mind. Rather than elevating the material, the portrayal seems to lean on some tired archetypes.

At a time when streaming platforms are inundated with content that often feels formulaic, it's rare to encounter a series that grips you with such immediacy and authenticity. This miniseries, which I stumbled upon purely by chance on its premiere day, turned out to be a remarkable discovery-an unassuming masterpiece that exceeded my expectations in every way.
What sets this series apart is its unflinchingly unsentimental approach to storytelling. By eschewing overly contrived emotional cues, it allows moments of genuine emotional depth to emerge organically, packing an understated yet profound impact. It's a raw, fast-paced, and intense experience that remains grounded and purposeful, never slipping into excess or artifice.
Visually, the series is a triumph. The meticulous attention to detail-whether in the period-accurate costumes, evocative set designs, or the dynamic and immersive camerawork-creates an unparalleled sense of presence. You're not merely observing events unfold from a distance; you're drawn into the action, experiencing the urgency and stakes alongside the characters.
While I often find action-heavy narratives reliant on spectacle at the expense of substance, this series defies that trend. Here, the brisk pacing and raw, visceral moments of violence serve as an extension of the story's thematic core, amplifying its authenticity rather than detracting from it.
From the first episode, the series establishes a gripping rhythm that's impossible to resist.
If this miniseries isn't recognized during awards season, it would be nothing short of an oversight. The precision of its costume design, the evocative score, the sharp direction, and the captivating performance by its lead actress deserve every accolade.
In many ways, this is more than just one of the best Netflix offerings in recent memory; it's a reminder of what storytelling can achieve when ambition meets artistry. For an industry that often prioritizes marketability over originality THIS is why I still am a subscriber.

The story evolves around this family daughter and her discoveries, mostly sexual and independence. Narrated by herself in an annoying deep south accent. How anyone could be a fake blonde in 1883 irks me a lot too.
The scenery is beautiful and great shot but the story line fails to capture me. The supporting cast is somewhat interesting and I wished there were more substance to the show and it's travellers. I've wasted 9 episodes in the hopes of it turning interesting beyond a teenage drama but it seems to be so intertwined with the main plot which is going west.
I loved Yellowstone for it's strong and complex characters but this is something different.
