'Eric LaRue' is like a cross between 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' and 'Mass' with a few little hints of 'God's Not Dead'. Now ignoring the third movie there, a cross between the first two movies should be a sure-fire thing that basically writes itself. It did not end up that way at all though. This film had no idea what to do with the concept.
I'm not a big fan of actors randomly giving directing a try. It's insulting to the art of directing, implying that just any old person can do it. Actors should act and directors should direct. Michael Shannon does a really bland job with this film. Everything is shot in the least interesting way. It often feels like a student film. It's very amateurish.
The sad thing is that everything was there was this to be a great film. When the subject matter is this heavy then the audience should be feeling all kinds of things. I never felt a single thing once. A generous 5/10.

I'll be honest, I didn't have the highest hopes for 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' working as a legacy sequel. I felt like it was a story that works once, but doesn't lend itself to being done over again with a fresh cast. I was wrong. They found a way to make the concept work and it was highly enjoyable.
The returning cast got a lot more screentime than I expected. I was kind of just expecting little cameos here and there and the new cast would have almost entirely their own story. Again, I was wrong.
The film doesn't pull any punches with the horror side of things. There are some brutal kill scenes and I liked that the fake jump-scares were kept to a minimum (there are still a few though annoyingly).
There is a scene that made me laugh where two bodies have been hung up in horrific fashion and the police have set up their "Do Not Cross" tape literally 5 feet in front of the scene, with hordes of people just standing there staring at it.
There's a line in this movie that says, "Nostalgia isn't real." But it is. The movie is riddled with references to the original two films, (sometimes a little heavy-handedly perhaps) but I really enjoyed it every time. It's crazy to me the original is 28 years old.
I loved everything about this film. It was the legacy sequel I didn't even know I needed. 9/10.

'M3GAN 2.0'. The movie with one of the worst trailers ever made, that we were forced to watch over and over and over again. What a treat that was every time. Now that I've seen the film I can at least understand that the people asked to edit the trailer together had very little to work with.
There was obviously a bit of 'T2' inspiration behind the storyline for this film. The difference is that that character was iconic, and that's why he was able to be on both the 100 greatest villains of all time and the 100 greatest heroes of all time list. 'MEGAN' on the other hand I do not consider to be iconic. In fact I think the concept of her was pushing things to carry one film, let alone two (and likely more - sigh).
I struggled with this film from start to finish. The pacing was miserable and I didn't care about the story at all. It was painfully safe. To the extent where a child is taken and it seemed like even the characters couldn't pretend that she was ever in any actual real danger. This was a miserable experience, saved only by the odd moment of humour. A generous 4/10.

What can you say about a film like 'September 5'? Like it's a well made film, a really made film, with great pacing and solid acting. But how good it can be is pretty limited from the go. A story about the coverage of the events, when the events themselves would be so much more interesting to watch. It becomes frustrating at a point.
I saw a couple of people describe this as "edge of your seat cinema" and I don't get that frankly. From our perspective, and the story we are following, what is the worst that could happen? We don't get the ideal angle or shot? We aren't the first to break a piece of news?
I think the film does a great job of tricking people into thinking they are watching something more important than they are (that is a compliment to the film, even if it may not sound like it). 6/10.

I think if I had attended Fantastic Fest last year and this had been the opening the film, I would've been a little disappointed. And not even simply because I didn't enjoy it, but because I think of the festival's opening movie being something over the top and extravagant and I just found this movie - unremarkable, I'm sad to say.
I really enjoyed James Ashcroft's debut film 'Coming Home in the Dark'. Everything I liked about that film was lacking here. The conflict of this movie felt forced, but also it was just unpleasant. Elder abuse is not a fun film subject to watch for over 100 minutes.
I usually love John Lithgow in villainous roles. What he did in 'Dexter' I will never forget. He seems to thrive on playing mad men. Here though, I just found his character annoying. I didn't want him to come on screen.
This was a film I simply couldn't connect with. 4/10.

Wow. This film was quite something. Back in the day this is the kind of film Chris Stuckmann would've done a Hilariocity review about. There's just so many unintentionally funny things throughout the film that you can't help but wonder at a point if it was intentional. Sadly, I don't think it was.
I could write paragraph after paragraph criticising this film, but it isn't serious enough to be worthy of doing that. The opening scene is terrible, the poker scene was laughable and insulting (and made no sense?), asking us to believe Liam Hemsworth is the same age as Russell Crowe was insulting, the story they went with was about the least interesting one they could possibly have done considering the set up, the acting was terrible and exposition was painfully in your face.
If you can get past all that you might just enjoy it. A generous 4/10 for throwing absolutely everything it could at the wall - even if none of it stuck.

Having Cillian Murphy as the lead of your movie is a bit of a double edged sword. On the one hand, you're going to get an incredible performance. He is a phenomenal actor, no one can deny that, and he is a large part of what keeps this film watchable. On the other hand though, you know you are signing up for a very sombre performance and likely the entire movie will be that way. He really doesn't do much else.
I had trouble connecting with this film. I thought it was a little odd to have a movie about the suffering of woman in the church system - and make it all about a man and his depressing struggles. It just seemed like an insensitive angle to approach it from.
This movie is based on a book and I can't help feeling it would work far better in that format. To get into his head and actually understand what he is feeling and thinking would be infinitely more interesting. A generous 5/10.

I like movies about really smart people. I like revenge movies. I like Rami Malek. I like movies where people are killed in creative ways. This movie had everything going for it before it even began. And it was good. But it could've been a lot better.
Where it let itself for me was that it was too polished and safe. I would've loved for it go in a much grittier direction. A movie like this should never be PG-13. It's wrong. Have a shocking scene or two. Give the audience something to talk about on the way home and think about the next day.
The concept is so strong though that it almost doesn't matter. You can just sit down, enjoy the ride, and then likely forget the film ever existed. 7/10.

'Good One' is an 89 minute film where exactly one interesting thing happens. Now plenty of films have managed to stretch a single event or moment over 90 minutes and make it interesting. 'Good One' does not pull it off. It leaves the moment incredibly late in the runtime and then barely explores it because there is no time left to do so. The film is only just becoming mildly compelling when it abruptly ends.
It's such a simple film and done in such a straightforward way that you can't help noticing how blatant the agenda is either. All men and boomers are awful apparently. I actually said to myself at one point this movie feels like it was made by a young female and sure enough when I checked the credits afterwards there it was.
Maybe I'm just not the right demographic for this film but it was not for me. 4/10.

'Love Lies Bleeding' will have to go down as one of the my biggest let downs of 2024. Not that it's a bad movie, it's very middling, but just because I had been really looking forward to this one ever since it came out.
I can't remember the last time I saw a film that was so consistently middle of the road throughout the entire runtime. Not once did I think to myself that this was a bad film. But also, not once did I think, "What a great scene" or "Okay this is finally getting good".
It just kind of felt half-baked. I never bought into the love story. It just kind of asks you to accept it, rather than proving that it exists. There's very little great dialogue and even the eventful scenes aren't overly interesting. But it always does just enough to keep things ticking along and keep you watching. 6/10.

I am at a point in my life where I am not handling body-horror well at all. And the body-horror in 'Bring Her Back' is something else. I was literally squirming in my seat. But this is a multi-layered horror movie that has a lot more to offer than just body-horror. It attacks you from multiple angles and they're all great.
It's rare to get a horror movie this well rounded. It works in so many ways it's actually pretty crazy. It has something for everyone and for that reason it is going to appeal to a lot more people than the average horror movie ever could.
I loved the characters in this movie. They are so well crafted and handled with so much care. And it works so well to always keep you invested and caring about the fate of these people.
The music is great, it's funny when it tries to be, scary when it's needed and heart-breaking when the time comes. It's hard to think of many horror movies I've seen that are this well rounded. 9.5/10.

It's hard to hate on a film like 'Departing Seniors'. It feels like an inexperienced up-and-coming filmmaker taking their shot, and with a limited amount of talent they actually do a lot right.
Of course it's very sloppy in a lot of ways, and you have to look past that in order to enjoy it. The performances are often over the top - people yelling their lines when there is no need for it, for example.
The horror scenes aren't overly suspenseful but they are interesting. And it's a whodunit which is always a fun added layer to any film.
This is a film that means well and takes its best shot. Is it perfect? Far from it. But there's enough going on to keep it afloat. 6/10.

'The Overnight' is the definition of getting every drop of blood out of a concept. This film had no business being as captivating and enthralling as it was with such a basic premise.
I'm realising I'm a big Patrick Brice fan. I have really enjoyed every thing I've seen of his and I need to complete his filmography. Something he does really well is hint that there are darker things going on beneath the surface. He does this with mysterious characters and unnerving settings and circumstances that keep you on edge, even if you're not entirely sure why.
This film goes to some truly outlandish places. I never felt like I knew what was going to happen next. It's a very short runtime, but I glued to the screen for every minute of it. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. 9/10.

We don't get a lot of movies like this anymore, so I'm very appreciative when they come along. The murder-mystery sub-genre field is rarely entered into these days. Possibly because it was so heavily mined during the 90s and 2000s that they feel like there is no originality left.
I knew the moment 'Killer Heat' finished that the biggest gripe I was going to see was a lack of originality and how predictable it was. And maybe that's fair and maybe it isn't. Put it this way, it's probably a lot more reasonable of a claim than 95% of movies that get called predictable.
Still, the movie has some good stuff going for it. There's a decent cast and a great setting for a movie like this. If you sit back and just enjoy the ride you might just find yourself having a good time. 7/10.

I don't know how well 'A Desert' will be received, because it requires a lot of patience on the part of the audience, but I really enjoyed it. To be fair though, it is exactly my kind of film. Nothing flashy, just a story of the pure evil that humans possess.
I never really felt like I knew where this film was headed. I didn't know how dark it was willing to go (I really had no idea as it turns out) and I didn't know the route it was going to go down. It's a fun way to watch a movie when that is the case.
As mentioned though it will test some people's patience. If that doesn't bother you then you'll likely find something quite enjoyable here along the way. 7/10.

I always wonder how they go about casting roles like this. "Listen, we have this tart who is absolutely horrendous in every way imaginable, and we think you'd be perfect for the role." Must be a casting director's nightmare.
Body horror is a strange thing. I still can't decide if I like it or not. On the one hand it makes me extremely uncomfortable to watch it. On the other hand, that's what horror is supposed to be, right? Some of the body horror in 'The Ugly Stepsister' I found extremely difficult to even keep my eyes on the screen. It doesn't hold back.
I'm not a fairy tales kind of guy, so this film wasn't designed for me. Even so, I found it oddly watchable and actually enjoyed a lot of the stuff it threw out there. 6/10.

I might be in the minority here, but when I go into a zombie film I'm not interested in the zombies. I'm interested in everything else surrounding the zombies. The story, the characters, the setting. If the zombie action is good and entertaining then that is a bonus.
'28 Years Later' gets the zombie action (which is pretty good I have to say) out of the way early. Then it gets into a really interesting story that had a lot more emotional depth than I ever expected to see in a film like this. It was really good stuff. If you're not connecting with the beginning of this film then stick with it, because it does evolve into something else, something better.
Having a child as the lead of your film is a brave move. Alfie Williams does a really good job I thought. But even as good as he was, he had a near impossible task ahead of him. It's the one glaring hole this movie has is that it's lacking a charismatic lead to drive the film. The side characters are really good and pave over the cracks as best they can. And I understand why the narrative they chose required a kid in the lead, but I do think it was a weakness in the film.

Nothing can compare to unfiltered comedy. I knew very early on in 'Babes' that this was going to be an extremely entertaining 100 minutes. The opening sequence is hilarious and sets the tone for the entire film.
I find Ilana Glazer unreasonably funny. She was terrific in 'Broad City' and she plays a very similar character here. If you liked that show then you are very likely to enjoy 'Babes' as well.
I haven't laughed this hard at a film in a long time. The chemistry between Glazer and Michelle Buteau is great and there are a number of side characters that play their part excellently as well (I could watch the different hair gags of John Carroll Lynch until the end of eternity and not get sick of them). This was a really good one. 9/10.

A film about a movie critic named 'Joel'. How could it possibly be bad? And it wasn't I'm glad to say.
This is one of those films where the tone was going to be everything. Try to be too serious and it's just going to come across unrealistic and illogical. Try to be too comedic and you're going to lose any edge the concept may have had. I think they did a really good job of navigating this, even if it is a little uneven throughout the runtime.
When the movie does something right though it really nails it. For example there's a kill scene in this movie involving a toy clown and nail that is absolutely top-draw horror. There isn't a horror movie in existence where this scene would be a let down compared to the rest of the film. Really well done.
I had a good time with this movie. Shudder Originals have not often been to my liking, but this was a good one. 7/10.

If this movie were mandatory viewing for every 12-year-old in the old, the earth would be unpopulated 100 years from now. You see movies like this and you think to yourself how awful it is that this happened to these poor people, but then you remember that they actually made a conscious decision to do this. What a world we live in.
The movie itself is a bit of a mess. It's just so pandering. A little subtlety would go a long way. It feels like it has to outwardly explain every feeling these characters are going through, rather than letting us read between the lines. And it often does it in a cheap way with a dialogue being shown that never actually happened before flashing back to reality.
This would've been a very unflattering role for Amy Adams to take on and I respect how much she commits to it. Without her this could've fallen into full-blown dumpster-fire territory. As it is though, it's still a barely passable mess. A generous 5/10.

It feels like I say this every time I watch a David Cronenberg, but they just aren't for me. Which is a shame, because in an industry seriously lacking originality, his ideas often have it. But then he never knows what to do with it seemingly and the final product just becomes a mess.
'The Shrouds' has so much going on, but it feels like it has nothing going on. Every concept is so half-baked and they all feel like side stories. It's a mishmash of ideas stuffed together for two hours and it leaves you feeling empty and unsatisfied.
The first half of the film is extremely slow and uninspired, but it does get a little better as it goes along I will say. There's still not a lot to see here. A generous 5/10.

7.4/10 is a ridiculously high IMDb score for a found footage horror film, even with it being European. This is a sub-genre that gets a lot of unwarranted hate, even before people hit play a lot of the time seemingly. I've been meaning to get around to this film for a long time. It was about what I expected.
It's not really my preferred style of found footage film it's worth noting, but it is very well done. It's very short at only 75 minutes and even then it keeps the pacing up to a very high level. It's not always particularly scary, but the final sequence is very well done and that's always important in found footage.
Anything that breeds life and positivity into this sub-genre is a win for me though and I'm glad to see it. 7/10.

I've never seen a film that so nonchalantly asks you to simply accept the ridiculousness of its premise. It doesn't even try to explain the absurdity and implausibility of it all. There isn't even anyone filming these murders? I thought I was losing my mind. After about 20 minutes though I realised the only way to get any enjoyment out of the film was to simply sit back, accept it, and go along for the ride. Even then, it's touch and go whether you'll enjoy it.
The one thing the movie does well, and really its saving grace, is that it creates some likable characters. It's hard to make a young woman who murders innocents for profit into a pleasant character, but the movie finds a way. Also some of the side characters are quite well created. And so while the horror and story may not always be working for you, at least you can fall back on that.
Some of the gore was quite effective and it's a nice and short film. It knows not to outstay its welcome. It's not all bad, but it certainly does require some effort on the audience's part. A generous 5/10.
The one thing the movie does well, and really its saving grace, is that it creates some likable characters. Time travel movies. If done right they can be great and a lot of fun, but I find when they take themselves too seriously then they can become extremely tedious. This is a prime example of the latter. What could have been a fun and interesting concept, with a little bit of thoughtfulness still behind it if done right, instead becomes an absolute slog as it tries to prove to the audience how smart it is.
The movie forgets to give you a reason to care about anything. The most simple aspect of any movie is to create stakes, and this movie forgets to do it. After about an hour in it tries to force some drama and conflict into the mix, but by then it is both too little and too late (and too confusing).
I didn't enjoy this one much at all. A generous 4/10.

After a very mundane opening scene and then a horrorless next 30 minutes, my hopes weren't overly high for 'Clown in a Cornfield'. Luckily from there on out it found its way onto the right path. It started combining some comedy into the horror and found a good mix of both. It's not always throwing great stuff at you, but when it is it's pretty satisfactory.
There is something very creepy about clowns, and very creepy about cornfields. So combining the two just seems like common sense. I'm shocked it took this long to do it. I was shocked to learn this was actually based on a novel.
I have never seen a film with so many gratuitous F-bombs. Almost every other sentence spoken has one thrown in there for no reason at all. I don't mind language in a movie, but this got to the point where it was just annoying.
'Clown in a Cornfield' could have been better, but it also could have been a whole lot worse. 6/10.
