Great movie. I haven't enjoyed a movie in the theater this much since Mission Impossible the Final reckoning and Top Gun Maverick, which this movie generates a similar vibe to for F1 racing. Brad pit plays an aging, experienced, racer that blew his chances at F1. By chance an old friend and competitors' desperate need to save his investment in F1 draws Pit back into the circuit. He's teamed up with a cocky rookie who's driven to obtain fame and success in F1 racing and see Pit as a failed, aging team member with little to share, and simply another obstacle standing in his way. What ensues is a journey in self awareness and a bonding that leaves the viewer fully engaged and rooting throughout. The anticipated formula for such a movie endeavor is thrown on its heels from the start, leaving the viewer unsure what will happen, adding to the thrill and increasing viewer engagement. On another note, I dislike movies that force woke items into the story line simply to meet hollywoods obsession with forced equality. This movie checks the box on most of the Hollywoods woke items, and while a few feel obviously forced, they don't in my opinion detract from the story line and while unnecessary actually complement it well. I highly recommend this movie and will be going to see it again soon. Enjoy!
The acting is superb. All the actors play their parts impeccably. The cinematography is very good. This is a true epic at its start that goes nowhere. As others have said the first half of the movie is extremely well done, excellent. There is so much potential here, but in Italy the movie takes a turn with what is done to the protagonist by his benefactor. There are so many ways this movie could have gone, could have been developed, but why this? It seems Hollywood is obsessed with this type of topic, it was not necessary, and ruined the movie as there was little to go on from there. In fact it seems like the movie ended in Italy, from that point on the rest of the movie seems to be just filler and the ending, well it's as if someone said, how are we going to end this thing and slapped something on after the fact. The overall movie has a very dark sad tone, which could have taken the viewer through a transformation of hope, success in struggle, however, even its misplaced ending can't bring it out of the shadows with its misplaced disco music. Only thing missing was a disco ball. It's really too bad, this truly could have been an epic, but they seem to run out of story, money, or passion.
I'm not really sure why all the negative reviews and why it was panned by the critics. It's an action movie/monster movie. I found it very entertaining. I saw it as a rental back just after it came out and watched it again for the second time recently. I still find it as surprisingly fun and enjoyable as I did the first time. The Chinese are cast as very dedicated and honorable soldiers, skilled, and sacrificing, ready to give their lives for a greater cause (this must have played well in the east). The Westerners as is not uncommon in such movies are selfish, seeking out money and the power that will lead them to the wealth they seek. However, they are thrust into a world and an adventure they did not want yet they rise to the occasion. They are continuously drawn back to their own selfish goals throughout the movie and Matt Damien's character has an inner struggle; to appease his companions while enticed by a world and a struggle that allows him to rise above his own selfish persona. Ultimately they become the heroes, they demonstrate superior skills from the start and regularly come to the aid of the soldiers at the most critical of times. Yes much of this is stereotypical, but it plays very well and I don't find the plot nor the action boring, repetitive, nor surprisingly all that predictable. This is well worth a watch, pretty good acting by all and very entertaining.
