Lady Golden Snake(,or whatever English title it goes by) appears to be a remake of a older wuxia film based off ancient Chinese novels. This is made specifically for Chinese audiences or for those who have a understanding and appreciation for the culture. For western viewers, a lot of the narrative and nuance can be easily lost. This film is about average for the genre from what I seen. The plot is a swordsman and a demon team up to get a magic sword that destroys a demon king to save humanity. The style is a mix of action, martial arts, fantasy and romance. The film itself looks sharp with nice camera work with a mix between CG effects and wirework for the effects. There is a ton of dialogue and with the subtitles coming at you pretty fast, there is something to be lost in translation that's important to the story. The sets and costumes were done well..If you are a fan of the genre, you have seen this sort of thing done before. While I think this is done well, I have seen this type of movie done a lot better. However, I did enjoy this and I found this to be a entertaining watch.
It goes without saying that Conan The Barbarian is a classic film, well made, well received and the perfect vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger to become a superstar and big draw at the box office. Director/writer John Milius didn't return for the sequel and it falls to veteran director Richard Fleischer, who has a different vision for the film and a lighter tone. When you try to make a follow up for a successful movie that was originally given a X rating for violence, you are going in the wrong direction. Also the material was taken less seriously and the approach was more generic. The story itself is nothing special and it was the director that insisted that Arnold's physique is a central focus. A great alternate title for this film is "Put On A Shirt Dude". The movie itself is competently made, well paced and a fairly entertaining (and very campy) fantasy action movie. It has been some time since I revisited Conan The Destroyer and with all of its flaws, with a script that plays like a Dungeons And Dragons module, I still enjoyed it. Although, it is not a popular opinion, I much prefer the even more campy fantasy flick Red Sonja to this. It also has Arnold in a rare supportive role and is also directed by Richard Fleischer.
Around the time this was made these type of films were a dime a dozen in Hong Kong. It contains a solid cast with Andy Lao, Max Mox.and Alex Tam as the leads in another film about brothers in the bleak crime underworld of Hong Kong. Norman Chu and the rapist guy from Brother Of Darkness and Daughters Of Darkness 1 and 2 are the main baddies here. Dragon Family is another entry to the heroic Bloodshed genre and another movie heavily influenced or imitating A Better Tommorrow. This film, while not too original was certainly well done with good acting and highly emotional scenes. The action is great and totally insane, the plot, bleak and uncompromising and the building of plot and characters is excellent. The problem with the film was the market was flooded with similar fare. With all of John Woo's work , similar genre fare like Return Engagement and Hero Of Tommorrow, it's hard for Dragon. Family to stand out.. However, these type.of films are not made anymore and are greatly missed. Dragon Family is great action drama, that is.melodramatic, bloody and brutal flick that doesn't have Chow Yun Fat in it ( but it certainly helps).
I guess this is a remake of a older Shaw Bros swordplay flick. It was directed and co starring Frankie Chan. Ti Lung is always good and this picture is no exception as he plays a crippled swordsman seeking revenge. There is a whole lot plot holes, but it doesn't matter as there is tons of well choreographed action that gets sped up at times and is completely insane. There is some goofy and out of place humor, as well tasteless jokes about AIDS( which I didn't know existed in period China). Ti Lung is the central focus and the main component on making this film.work. Ti Lung is always good and made some shoddy productions more watchable and this production is no exception,
The Witch From Nepal was a pre A Better Tommorrow vehicle for Chow Yun Fat , at this time was a popular television actor, but had a hard time with success on the big screen. The film itself is a weird mix of fantasy, horror and romance and is held together by director Ching Sui Tung who (at this point) was best known for making cult swordplay/martial arts masterpiece Duel To The Death, as well as being action choreographer on a lot of the Hong Kong movies that you like. Sometimes the film gets a little confusing or hard to follow, but visually looks great with excellent action choreography. Chow Yun Fat's performance and screen presence is good. The Witch From Nepal is not the best film or the easiest to get into, but is still a decent watch and one of Chow Yun Fat's most unusual films.
Shaolin VS The Evil Dead is true to its title. Having Gordon Liu as a Shaolin monk as the lead is certainly not a bad idea either. This film is a hybrid of martial arts, horror and comedy. This magical brew certainly works with all the kung fu fighting, hopping vampires, black magic and tongue in cheek humor than you can shake a stick it. I thought this was done pretty well and it put a smile on my face. Gordon Liu has aged well and even though he is in his 70's is still in fighting form and doesn't look like he aged much since Master Killer.l Being entertained is something you can definitely take to the bank with Shaolin VS The Evil Dead.
The Shinjuku Incident is a dark and dramatic turn for Jack's Chan. He is a Chinese immigrant in Japan. This film shows the unbelievable poverty and hardship these people must endure and how it leads to crime. This is mostly taken from Nick's (Jackie Chan) point of view, but also shows the
Japanese perspectives as well. This is a very different side of Jackie Chan that was rarely seen since Crime Story. The difference here is this film is a drama and Crime Story, which was plenty dark was still a action flick. The Shinjuku Incident is much grittier and relies a lot less on styled action. The film is quite violent, but is a story and character driven drama. Jackie Chan does well in this role and as the story unfolds , shows a lot of depth in Jackie's performance and the story. It was definitely a change of pace for Chan and a harrowi. .ing journey into the pits of despair . Excellent.
Blitz is a change of pace for Jason Statham with this gritty and realistic 70's styled police thriller. Jason Statham is a cop, paired up with a gay cop that has to deal with his anti gay ( or homophobic coworkers). He is gets down to business and is a good cop, respected by Statham. Together they are on a case where a serial killer that kills cops is running rampant in the city. Blitz has more in common with Dirty Harry then The Transporter and Statham actually has to do a bit of acting here. There is quite a bit of action here, but more realistic and less stylized. The film was well paced and well made as a whole. I enjoyed this quite a bit.
I always thought Sniper was a excellent, well made movie. The direct to video sequels range from serviceable to disposable. Tom Berenger is a Marine Corps sniper and one of the best in his profession. He is paired up with a rookie ( Billy Zane) to conduct clandestine assassinations in South America. What makes Sniper different from other action movies is this shows the consequences of killing. The film gets quite dark and blurs the lines of morality, survival and shows the
consequences to a occupation where violence is part of the job description. Tom Berenger is absolutely excellent in this showing lots of range.and exploring the psychology of a professional killer. He also shows his strength of his character with his dedication to getting the job done and his loyalty to his country and his compatriots. Sniper is done very well and much more than your average action movie once you scratch the surface.
It's been a while since I last watched 80's classic Tank. This is the sort of movie that I would watch with my Dad whenever this played on cable. James Garner is in top form as soon to be retired Army Sgt. When he gets on the wrong side of the good ole' boy sheriff, he has to stand up for his family and for justice. Owning a Sherman Tank made it easy for him to achieve this goal and with media coverage public opinion is on his.side. Tank came out in 1984. The same year Twisted Sister made their classic album "Stay Hungry". Tank is a whole lot of "We're Not Going To Take It" and James Garner played a very righteous and honorable military serviceman. There really is nothing about this film that I don't like. It's well done and is a good movie about standing up and fighting for your rights. Tank has aged well.
GI Executioner is a low budget, pretty boring and forgettable action movie shot on location in Singapore. The director is Joel Reed, who directed one of my favorite cult horror films( Bloodsucking Freaks). While still a pretty sleazy movie, this movie is mostly a snooze fest, low on action with a convoluted plot that's all over the place. GI Executioner later got picked up by Troma for the home video market and I am sure only because this is a Joel Reed film. The overall quality of the film is low, the leading actor is alright, but there is little in the way of excitement. I would not say that this is unwatchable, but I wish I chose a better movie to end my day.
This is a remake, reboot of the original 1987 film. The original film was a very funny and disgusting 80"s splatter film. This is a little more story oriented and more of a dystopian sci fi action film where the homeless are a target by the system and they fight back. This is very different from the original film and has more social commentary. It's still very tongue in cheek and does maintain the disgusting splatter effects where people's skin melts and explodes. For what this is, it's still a decent watch. However I feel the 2024 version riffs more from Paul Verhoven's Robocop than the original film. The acting performances are mostly disposable and inferior to the gore. If you enjoy lighthearted splatter flicks with a good amount of action, you have a good chance enjoying this. I did find this to be amusing but I much prefer the original film as it's more unique and better executed.
What can be said of George Romero 's film The Crazies? It was sandwiched between The Night Of The Living Dead and Dawn Of The Dead and being half as good as either. This is a nightmare vision of a pandemic virus that causes people to act irrational and violent. Martial law is declared and most of the film is guys in hazmat suits gunning people down. This is a drop in quality to Night Of The Living Dead for sure. The pace is slow and the film tends to have a lot of boring filler. However, rest assured that The Crazies is still a George Romero film and not the best of his work. For B movie horror, The Crazies is still a decent watch although is not a movie of his that I revisit often.
Maniac is one of my favorite horror movies, but with no Joe Spinneli another Maniac movie is impossible. So, director William Lustig brings us Maniac Cop. There is a serial killer cop that is killing people on the mean streets of NYC. Maniac Cop brings the suspense, tension and dark ambiance of horror with the quick pace, car chases and shootouts familiar to action fans. William Lustig blends genres well and has a strong cast with Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, William Smith, Richard Roundtree and Captain Dynoball from Tango And Cash as the Maniac Cop. Maniac Cop is a cult classic and spawned two sequels. I enjoyed this and I think Maniac Cop is good for what it is.
I saw this recently at a showcase double feature that also played Don't Go Into The House. This film is a somewhat disjointed, brain damaged cinematic trip for fans of the filthiest and most depraved horror and exploitation genre films. A lunatic criminal heavy metal dude tries to make a buck directing titties. Beautiful nude women is not enough so he decides to up the ante combining sex orgies with extreme violence and bizarre antisocial behavior. This is similar in content to A Clockwork Orange and The Last House On The Left, but much sleazier, way more violent and just sick. I'm sure the barf bags were overflowing at the already scuzzy grind house porno.theaters that it played at.
Those places could be dirty and dangerous. To watch out so you don't step on landmines or sit on a homeless guy trying to get his sleep for the evening. The Last House On Dead End Street has some extremely brutal gore and seriously disturbing scenes. It doesn't always make sense and is shocking even by modern standards paving the way for depravity like A Serbian Film.

Usually remakes of classic movies are trash and a waste of time. I did however really enjoy this adaptation and is easily Eli Roth's best film. It doesn't touch Michael Winner/Charles Bronson 's 1974 classic, but it doesn't have to. Death Wish (the 2018 version) has a different story from the original film and is set in modern times. Bruce Willis is easily the modern equivalent of Charles Bronson and here Paul Kersey is a doctor and this takes place in Chicago. Similar to the original movie, the tone of the film is very bleak and the violence is hard hitting. When a home invasion/burglar goes wrong and tragedy occurs the results are heartbreaking. Bruce Willis is both good here as a dramatic actor and action hero. This is a good project for Bruce as he walks the tightrope between the two for what is needed in the story. Of course by the end of the film Bruce is in full action hero mode, but I doubt anyone would complain..This reboot was in development Hell for a long time and had lots of different actors attached (including Sylvester Stallone). I do think Bruce Willis did a really good job and the modern adaptation of Death Wish is a dark and gory action drama that I thought was bloody well done.
Gang Related is the last film from rapper/actor Tupac and is paired up with James Belushi as a couple of corrupt cops. James Belushi is a fast talking violent psychopath that wants to get a big pile of money and retire to Hawaii. James Earl Jones and Dennis Quaid also appear. This is a fast paced, action packed crime drama with great dialogue , solid acting and gritty violence. Overall this is a good watch about what comes around goes back around. James Belushi is underrated as a actor and gives a brilliant performance here as a villain. Tupac is the more sympathetic of the two characters and James Belushi is just grimy and cold blooded.
Dog Tags is a cheap Italian production made to cash in on the success of Platoon..Dog Tags is little in common with Platoon, but is cool for what it is. The film was shot on location in the Philippines and my Vinegar Syndrome Blu Ray looks absolutely fantastic. When a group of soldiers is waiting for pick up they are ordered to retrieve a box left behind by a crashed helicopter. The tone of the film is quite grim and the characters in this film live and die in a horrific fashion. The jungle is humid, and dangerous with booby traps, difficult terrain and enemies at every turn.. Meeting your demise at any second is a reality that has our characters on constant edge and mortal danger. The violence is quite graphic and gory. Dog Tags truly embodies the brutality of war and is great for its realism and gritty, claustrophobic feel.
Force Five is a movie I never heard of. Once I saw that this was directed by Robert Clouse who made classics like Enter The Dragon and Black Belt Jones and saw the cast of very credible martial artists I decided this was worth a shot. I certainly won't complain about the fight scenes as they are definitely solid, but the film is pretty boring and poorly acted when there is no fighting happening. I don't mind the bad acting, it didn't make Black Belt Jones any less enjoyable. While that movie had some shortcomings Black Belt Jones is a fun movie and Jim Kelly, who is cooler than that? Definitely not Joe Lewis. I definitely have a lot of respect for the guy for his achievements in the martial arts community, but he is a terrible leading man with no charisma or screen presence. Bruce Lee had searing screen presence and is practically jumping through the screen. Joe Lewis is pretty lame cookie cutter hero. At least this is better than Jackie Chan's Hollywood failure The Battle Creek Brawl, but Force Five was decent enough, but I probably will forget about it next week. The plot is to have a group of martial artists rescue a senator 's daughter from a Kool aid drinking cult of karate students located on Kung Fu Island. How is this not the best movie ever?
I think this fourth installment to the In The Line Of Duty series is the first that I have seen. If you like cop action movies In The Line Of Duty 4 is truly first rate. This was made in the prime Golden Era of Hong Kong cinema, which means you are getting some of the best action, fights and stunts on Planet Earth. It's directed and choreographed by Yuen Woo Ping( who is one of the best of the best action chreographers in HK and the world). Yuen Woo Ping adapted well from period martial arts films to modern action pictures like this. Cynthia Khan is the leading lady and Donnie Yen teams up for a early performance. This fits into the "girls with guns" subgenre that was popular in HK, but also has lots of great fight sequences. The stunts are insane and as a whole this stands up to pretty much any action movies coming out of the east or the west. I definitely need to check out the rest of the series as I really enjoyed this fourth installment.
My Heart Is An Eternal Rose is very well crafted heroic bloodshed movie. This is not so much about honor and brotherhood, but a love triangle story. Both of these themes have been done to death in this genre But I digress, everything here was put together quite nicely with acting, characters and of course action. Joey Wang is gorgeous as always and gives a solid performance. Kenny Bee was convincing as a deadly hitman. The early performance from Tony Leung(the one from Hard Boiled, Hero, etc is a must see and a standout, breakthrough performance. Even though this is a heroic bloodshed movie there is very little glamorized about the triad lifestyle. The dramatic scenes are handled as well as the action scenes. The tone is dark and this is one of the most well made action films with a love story since John Woo's The Killer. Both films came out around the same time and I am not going to tell you that this hit me with the same kind of impact as The Killer, this is a very good, well made movie that I would highly recommend.
An Eye For An Eye starts out like a typical heroic bloodshed movie and quickly turns the genre on its head. Triad life is not glamorized here at all and there really are no good guy gangsters . ( at least not in this film). Alan Tam( who usually plays a good guy gangster) brutalized and took advantage of Joey Wang who was put in charge of the triad due to her father's incarceration. There is a bit of a love triangle around two cop friends around Joey Wang, with Max Mok being secretly in love with her..Alan Tam is actually qute despicable in this villainous role and was rooting for his comeuppance ( which really can't come soon enough, lol). Joey Wang is gorgeous and gives a very good performance that made me wish Chow Yun Fat would show up to take everyone out and save her. Max Mok is great as a hotheaded cop. An Eye For An Eye is a tragic and extremely violent melodrama and is really dark and very well done. There are some jaw dropping action sequences that are exceptional for any time period and extremely bloody and brutal.
