TV shows come; TV shows go. Until a very few years ago, only the "real" networks could produce quality programs. In case you haven't been paying attention, cable networks are now out-shining the "big 4". And now comes USA with "Fairly Legal." It's a lawyer show -- and it isn't. It's a cop show -- and it isn't. It has a hot star as a lead. And, her character is REAL!!! None of the writing is nearly as contrived as most shows' writing seems to be today. The plotting is real, and the episodes conclude with a heart-warming flourish. I hope this show builds an audience, and the ratings keep it on the air. It was a real nice touch to end the pilot with a tribute to Michelle, who died in November of 2010 from cancer.
First of all, let me assure you that I have absolutely no financial ties to this movie. That being said, let me tell you that I do now have a PSYCHOLOGICAL tie to this movie. By now, you know that this is a split- personality movie. Joanne Woodward won an Oscar for "Three Faces of Eve"; Sally Field won an Emmy for "Sybil". HALLE BERRY IS BETTER!!! Watch her performance, and, without CGI or special effects, you'll see her change from an "exotic dancer (ie: stripper)", to a racist, to a little girl. You'll be sucked in to the story. Then you'll be on the edge of your seat with tears in your eyes when, at the end, the terrible crisis from her youth is starkly revealed. And yet, the written epilogue just before the closing credits is uplifting and hopeful. If EVER there was a "must-see" movie, THIS IS IT!!
I never read the book. I never HEARD of the book. I never heard of the author. I'd never heard about this movie. Now that I've seen it, I'm wondering just how good this wonderful little Mulligan kid can become. The purpose of the kids' existence is as appalling as the revelations of Nazi atrocities. But, we are sucked in to caring about Kathy, Ruth and Tommy. This is the mark of the truly great movie. Carey again proves that she is the real thing, one of the finest actors of our age. She's too young to be this good. She acts with her face, her words, but mostly through her eyes, which look like they have the wisdom of the ages behind them. Of course, this cannot be, because she's only in her 20's. Add up her entire book of work, and she becomes one of the most bankable stars around.
