I get this guy's supposed to be a miner but the notion they'd send crews out into a deadly dangerous with so little training that he panics at every unexpected event is not realistic.
Watch "The Martian" for a better depiction of what people willing to live in such dangerous conditions and trained for the job will do in reaction to disaster.
I've read SF all my life. The best stories are those in which the protagonists faced with life or death situations face them calmly and rationally - as they are trained to do.
That said I wish someone would make a movie or TV series based on Frank Herbert's "Destination: Void." That would depict exactly what I'm describing here.

I've watched several of the episodes of this series on Amazon Prime Video in the last month and most are of some interest especially for those interested in the history of aviation and of the USAF.
However, this episode really stood out to me, because of the obvious care and attention to detail given to the script, the way the events unfold. Series TV in this era ranged from the jejeune to the mildly interesting, dominated by westerns and adventurous fare such as "Highest Patrol" and "Ripcord."
I was fascinated by the storyline of this episode and how it brought a true-to-life grittiness to a screenplay that presumably was taken from actual events.
