Such an iconic film, especially for anyone interested in bow-hunting, white water canoeing and survival,
Sadly, classics like this are almost never seen by the generations that have come after it was first released.
A remake would need new story-line twists, a budget that is fitting for such a project, and some great actors. I know producers would have to consider "diversity" nowadays, but that's okay as long as they didn't make any of the main characters a woman. This is after all a film about men adventuring into a pristine wilderness, and even to include one female in the party would just be unrealistic.
And the infamous scene that supposedly shocked theater goers would be almost a boring yawn for audiences now.
James Dickey wrote the novel from which the film was adapted. The book is a great read, well worth seeking out. It fills out the story and adds so much insight that can't be included in a 1 hr 49min film. His other novel,"To the White Sea", is also worth reading. Dickey brought his experience as a pilot in WWII to the pages of the book, and it shows.
DELIVERANCE = Catch the film if you can, it's well worth it even if it's a bit dated.
Hollywood loves remakes so I'm surprised one hasn't been attempted so far.
Just had a malicious thought. The Asylum film production company could make a film with all female main characters. Nah, wouldn't work. Not that that's ever stopped The Asylum yet.

Cool Hand Luke - a fabulous film without a doubt. Highly watchable. But I've always wondered about the intelligence, or lack thereof, of the main character, Luke. Sure, I know that''s a main ingredient in the story. If he didn't do dumb, preposterous things, like he does right from the start, it would be a whole 'nother. (Nother is a real word which functions similarly to other and another, and its use traces back to the early 14th century. In the late 19th century it became more common to see the word nother paired with whole, constructing the phrase a whole nother.)
Anyhow, if you've not seen it, shame on you. If you have, then why not watch it again.
I know it's a classic, and many people say NEVER do a remake of a classic film, but it would be a way of introducing the story to a couple of generations who have probably never heard of it.
Where do I start a petition to have Hollywood produce a remake of this great, but now so old, classic film?

Summary: Nothing much happens and it's all fairly pointless.
I found this film uninteresting, uninspiring, and underwhelming.
The music heard while viewing the spaceship from outside of it was annoying. I also found it unrealistic that when viewed from outside the spaceship, and the propulsion is fired, there are sound effects. I know why film makers have that, but for a film that is supposed to be aiming at more realism than Star Wars etc., this is just unacceptable. Outer Space, as they used to call it, is a vacuum. Sound does not travel through a vacuum. I don't know for certain but is think the original film, 2001 - A Space Odyssey, got it right and dispensed with idiotic sound effect of rocket blast noises in space.
In the end it's all rather pointless and dissatisfying. We find out nothing about the Alien Intelligence that we didn't already know from the first few minutes of the original film.
It's a pity that another of Arthur C. Clarke's novels, namely Rendezvous with Rama, has been made, though as of 2021 a film is supposed to be in production. Personally though, I'd rather it was adapted into a mini series as there are several books and it has so much potential for a gripping series.
