I just can't understand how the producers let this catastrophe happen and the music/soundtrack staff destroy the well earned quality of the series by good cinematography, script and acting. I am at episode 3 and struggling not to quit as the music makes difficult to appreciate the series. It comes with worse choices in critical moments turning emotional scenes into laughable clichés and scenes with depth into cheap commercials of perfume or whatever. The costumes and decores make so much attention to reflect the spirit of the time of this historical series only to become a joke with the American disco house playing during a 1920s Madrid party and other anachronistic music. What about the horrible soundtrack with cheesy pop songs that during a supposedly tense dialogue comes out of nowhere to give the impression that you are visiting a shopping mall or a teenager school activity? Seriously how can this degree of amateurism be possible and who the hell let this sabotage happen?
The story is unrealistic and ideological with many inconsistencies and exagerations. They tried to make something spectacular to a degree that it is annoying. The series also suffers from editing errors even though the cinematography is rather good. I also have to credit the excellent acting by the lead actors. It is just disappointing that a huge potential is wasted by pretentious script writers. The only part I actually enjoyed was the dilemma and character development of the officer trying to cope with emotions.
Ichi is one of those films that make you remember that cinema is actually art and not just a tool for Western propaganda.
It is very beautifully done, elegant and subtle.
Especially if you like anime and manga you will enjoy this piece of art.
