Where are the adults? Not a whole lot of them. That's one. There aren't many characters in the film whose survival is important, to me, anyhow. Javi's good, Ben's good, the rest... menh. That's two. Don't watch this for the characters or the "plot". Watch it for the special effects.
The main female lead actress is apparently 26, but due to limited acting skills, really bad directing, or really bad writing, she come across as a teenager. Also, did I say not very interesting, so who cares what happens to her?
The self-described cowboy, who is the lead male protagonist, is just... annoying. This guy isn't going to get any woman's blood racing, he's just a dick. In a movie of better calibre (such as the original film), he'd have met his end somewhere before the middle of the film.
I kinda feel bad for the guy playing the cowboy storm chaser. He's required to really ham it up in order to establish that he's some kind of yahoo. He might be a decent actor, but we don't get to see that.
Watch the original, revel in the genuine chemistry between helen hunt and bill paxton, see the genesis of a genuine genius actor (Philip Seymour Hoffman), see small town people portrayed respectfully.
This new version is awful. Great special effects, though.

The actors are good. Gerard Butler is a seasoned pro, does just fine here. My complaint is that there seems to be just way too much extemporizing. I suspect it is a function of the direction. I hate it in any movie. It makes the actors seem to be not good actors, even when they do well in other movies.
I don't go to the movies to see actors behaving like normal people ;> There's plenty of that in daily life.
They want more words from me. Hmm... Okay, the scenery's lovely. Films that take place in backwoods sort of settings are interesting, they lend a lot of atmosphere.
Of all the cast, Gerard Butler seems to be doing the least of it, and I'm glad. He knows his beans.
